My 7 year old says immediately, "Oh Mama you said sex!" I replied "yes honey I did…boys are the male sex and girls are the female sex." He says…"mom, I know what sex means…" So after I wet my pants I said, "really, well tell me then." Now keep in mind we are at the dinner table with his 2 little brothers who are 4 & 2. He replies…"MOM, not in front of the kids!"….after I stopped laughing we talked later and in fact at school (1 grade) he does know what it is!!!!!!!! Thankfully he thinks it is only for married couples…AHHHHHH!

I think we’ve all gotta be ahead of the curve (ie the kids on the playground) to make sure they understand the birds and the bees :-)

I actually have a book we are going to read together; that way I don't have to come up with the words myself. This is much sooner than I'd like to have this talk, but I'd rather her hear it from me than from another kid at school or camp. I realized I would have to do this when I had to come clean about the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus much sooner than I would have thought or liked; all thanks to an older child at after school care who was all too eager to share his/her knowledge of such things. And when I do talk to her about it, just as I did when I truthfully answered her sincere "Tell me the truth, Momma…are you the (insert name of imaginery gift-bearer here)?" question, I plan to tell her it is not her job to share this new information with any other kid under any circumstances. I feel your pain, Kate!

I am always worried about the bus talk and ask my children, but you learn more as they talk to each other. Thanks so much for sharing!!
