grayson for st baldricksWhen it comes to cancer we often think of older adults… but every 3 minutes, a child in the world is given this devastating diagnosis.   And the prognosis can be grim, one in five children diagnosed in the United States will not survive.
Despite these statistics, less than 4% of all cancer research funding allotted by the federal government, goes to the study of childhood cancer.
This is where ordinary people step up to do something really extraordinary in a really upbeat and fun way.  Last year it was over 57,000 ordinary people who went to “brave the shave” for St. Baldrick’s $38 million dollars for childhood cancer research.
This year, St. Baldrick’s hopes to make it to $50,000 and have a very special person to honor at the event.
On Saturday, March 14, 2015, the Innsbrook Pavilion will play host to the annual St. Paddy’s Palooza to benefit The St. Baldrick’s Foundation.   The family-friendly, and free, festival plans to have live music, vendors, food trucks, Irish dancing, a petting zoo, and so much other entertainment.
At the heart of the event is St. Baldrick’s signature head-shaving event.  Volunteers of all ages and both sexes sign up to shave their heads in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment. Volunteers at the event help by raising money for childhood cancer research and by showing kids its okay to be bald.

This year, the event is honoring a special local hero, Grayson Dutton, 4 years old from Mechanicsville.  In 2011, at 9 months old, Grayson was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, and then relapsed in September of 2014.  Grayson has undergone surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, and continues his treatments.  In the face of adversity, even at just 4 years old, he has shown remarkable strength, resilience, and courage.   Treatment may prevent Grayson from attending the event, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do a lot to show your support.

You can help support Grayson and millions of children just like him at this incredible event.  Take a lead role by being a team captain, or signing up to shave your head, make a tax deductible donation to the event, or volunteer in a number of other roles. www.stbaldricks.org/events/richmond

On Good Friday of this year, our He-Twin and She-Twin lost a beautiful, courageous classmate to cancer.

Their school, our community, all who ever met Abbie Waters still grieve, and feel her absence profoundly. For this holiday season, her parents’ first Christmas without their daughter here on earth, Abbie’s mom, Mary Ann, is making a request:

Abbie’s Christmas
“We have an idea for Abbie’s stocking this year. You know how she was all about friendship and her friends were/are her world. Well, if you want to do a random act of kindness like letting someone in line ahead of you at Target, picking up a piece of litter, or just doing something extra for a friend or charity in Abbie’s name….and then email it to Abbie at her email address: Abbiewaters [at ] aol.com, we will put all of the emails in her stocking by the fireplace and then on Christmas morning when we would have opened gifts with Abbie, instead we will open and read all the acts of kindness done in her name. I think this will be something Abbie would appreciate and I know Jeff and I will need something that morning to help us through. She loves/loved life and her friends….and most everyone she met she would consider as a new friend.”

If during this holiday season you find a window wherein you can enact a morsel of niceness in remembrance of our much-loved and much-missed friend, please make a note of it, and email to AbbieWaters@aol.com. If it’s easier or more comfortable for you, leave a comment here and we will forward your kindnesses to Abbie’s mom in time for Christmas eve.

Ethan Died Yesterday – Please Vote So Others Don’t Have To http://richmondmom.com/2011/08/09/ethan-died-yesterday-please-vote-so-others-dont-have-to/ http://richmondmom.com/2011/08/09/ethan-died-yesterday-please-vote-so-others-dont-have-to/#comments Tue, 09 Aug 2011 16:34:53 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=10665

Ethan died yesterday. Will you vote so others don't have to?

What would you do if your young child died today? Unfortunately, parents find out every day.

For years cancer robbed Ethan of his childhood and yesterday it took his life. There are no words to communicate our sorrow….this is a tragedy that we should never have to speak of.In a recent article in the NYTimes, Dr. Michael Link, the president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology recently said “If you are a pediatric oncologist, you know how to cure 70 …to 80 percent of patients. But without these drugs you are out of business.”What does this article tell us……children could be treated and cured, lives could be spared….if only the money were there to make the treatments available to everyone. Cancer treatments are being RATIONED in our country! We know how to cure most patients and the greatest barrier is funding. Please VOTE to help us give $250,000 to research. We could will donate every dime of the winnings to research. This is a golden opportunity but we need your help to double and triple our current voting.

For Ethan (Team Ethan Jostad) and for his friend Faith (Faith’s Friends)…..please vote every day! Childhood cancer NEEDS this win!

Today, we vote in honor of Ethan and in remembrance of his life.

Join the Journey 4 A Cure Facebook page, and come out for Wine Down Wednesday at the Wine Loft on August 10 to also support Journey 4 A Cure.  You will help save a child’s life.

Declan’s short life offers hope and support for other children through J4AC http://richmondmom.com/2011/07/19/declans-short-life-offers-hope-and-support-for-other-children-through-j4ac/ http://richmondmom.com/2011/07/19/declans-short-life-offers-hope-and-support-for-other-children-through-j4ac/#comments Tue, 19 Jul 2011 19:07:26 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=9830

Honor Declan's life by helping raising funds for J4AC.

Journey 4 A Cure (J4AC)

is an organization that every mom wishes we did not even have to have. But we do, and we are thankful for J4AC.

J4AC is devoted to raising money to advance research efforts and development for pediatric cancer. They focus on creating awareness about the realities of pediatric cancer and providing support, outreach and caring for families facing unthinkable journeys with a child suffering from cancer.

Declan remembered

Journey 4 A Cure was established in November 2010 to honor and remember Declan Black Carmical and many other children who have died  or battled pediatric cancer. Declan lost his brave battle just 8 days before his 1st birthday, but thanks to the love and support of his family and friends, this powerful organization was born to help others.

Declan’s smile and zest for life in spite of his fight with cancer during his almost one year of life, gave his parents and others the will and motivation to create a movement to help others. The organization is all about embarking on a powerful Journey that begins with each person and ends with a cure!

Benefits for J4AC

The August 10, 2011 Wine Down Wednesday event at The Wine Loft will benefit the J4AC organization. We encourage everyone to attend this fun social event, enjoy discounted prices on wine, free food, music, and lots of fun. There are door prizes, and there will be a brief presentation and information provided about J4AC. For just $5 at the door, you can help a very worthy cause and enjoy socializing with friends and family.

In addition, J4AC also has these events planned:

  • 5k/1k & Family Funfest on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Summerlake Neighborhood in Richmond VA. Event is 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • 4-A-Cure Fest at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, VA is 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.

Click here for details on above events.

Help us find a cure

Please plan to attend the August 10, 2011 Wine Down Wednesday event to benefit this important cause. Bring a friend and spread the word so we can help find a cure for pediatric cancer and honor Declan for the joy he brought to so many in his brief life here on earth.

If you can’t attend this event, please visit the website and learn more or donate.
