It’s time to Finish Strong!

With the break of winter, distractions abound. Flowers bloom, spring sports begin; we feel the warmth of the sun and think summer is just around the corner. But, before we reach summer we have to finish the school year and finish it strong.  With only a couple months left and SOL’s in May, it is important for students to stay focused on the end game.

As parents we need to ensure our students don’t fade during the final weeks of school. Now is the time to review the rules set at the beginning of the school year and make adjustments as necessary. With extra daylight and increased activities, it’s easy for homework to fall by the wayside, so sticking to a plan and schedule becomes more critical than ever.

Making sure your student is getting enough sleep and setting adequate time aside for study will help them stay on top of tests and projects. If your student is moving into the danger zone with grades, homework or focus, consider one-on-one tutoring to ensure a strong finish to the school year. It’s not too late to turn a C to a B or a B into an A. All Fired Up is a hands-on clay-painting workshop that is fun for kids and parents alike with eight different after-school programs.

WEEK-LONG AND COMMUNITY-LED PROGRAMS:

At Good Shephard Child Development Center, children enjoy playful activities and enrichment programs in a safe, nurturing, Christian environment.  After-school care offered 2 – 5 days a week for Swift Creek Elementary, Evergreen and J. B. Watkins Elementary Schools.

Jack and Jill School’s after school programs provide homework assistance, supervised play, computers, Drama, Music, Stretch ‘n’ grow, playground time and more in a safe, stimulating and relaxed environment. Transportation available from the following elementary schools: Ridge, Pemberton, Skipwith, Maybeury, Tuckahoe, Pinchbeck, and Jackson Davis.

Greater Richmond ARC’s After-School Programs provide structured recreational and leisure opportunities – both in the community and center-based – for school-aged persons with developmental disabilities. ARC has two after school sites – on Richmond City’s Northside and at Camp Baker in Chesterfield County.

The Youth Life Learning Center provides a safe and structured environment for children after school. Certified teachers and trained volunteer mentors instruct the children daily from 2:30 PM-6:00 PM to encourage the children’s ability to complete their homework successfully and strengthen their academic skills.

Sticker Shock.

These words ring true for any family as it begins the college research process for children. Most families begin with best intentions, but find themselves stopping at one unsettling point: the annual average cost of attendance. That’s when shock sets in.

Costs of attending college are steadily rising. In 2011, average tuition at four-year public universities rose eight percent, and private university tuition costs rose four-and-a half percent. Increases in public school tuition rose faster due to decreases in funds available to the universities, throwing more of a burden on students.

What can be done to reduce the overall cost of college education?

Plan Ahead

• The first step is to reduce the time it takes to earn a degree. Success on Advanced Placement tests and taking high-school courses that are accepted both for high school and college credit can effectively reduce the number of hours required for a degree by a significant amount (possibly one semester or more).

• Another option is going the community college route for the first two years. The cost of completing general education credits at a community college can average about $2,700 per year versus an average of $8,000/year if living at home and attending a four-year public university. The caveat here is to make sure the college you plan to attend afterward will accept the credits you wish to transfer.

• An important statistic to evaluate when researching colleges is the four-year graduation rate. Schools with high graduation rates tend to push students in a direction to complete their degree work in four years. These schools may allow students to delay declaring a major until the middle or end of their sophomore year and emphasize coursework in the first two years that will count toward almost any major.

• A key to garnering additional grants and need-based aid is to properly allocate your assets so that when the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is completed, these funds will not be counted against the family. Families need to consult with a financial planner who specializes in the college funding process to insure their assets are properly allocated.

• Completing the FAFSA early and accurately is also important. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to wait until you actually file your income tax statement to submit the FAFSA. It can be completed using estimated tax data. By submitting early, you are at the head of the line for dollars that will be awarded. Late filing means that much of the available funds will already have been allocated.

Private University vs. Public

Don’t rule out attending a top-ranked private university because you don’t think you can afford it. Just comparing the tuition costs of a public university versus a private institution doesn’t tell you the whole story. Financial aid is an important part of the equation.

My friend Beth Trebour IS Richmond’s SUPERMom! She is the mom to Jenna (16) and Rachel (13).  Jenna was born with a metabolic disorder called cerebral folic deficiency syndrome. Because of her disabilities, Jenna requires a lot of her family’s time and energy. Beth is a WORKING mom, employed as a Service Health Coordinator. Beth also trains and competes in triathlons, often pushing Jenna in a stroller and with Rachel right along side. In 2011 Beth helped start a new organization called Running With Those That Can’t. She has been one of the key organizers am not sure WHEN Beth sleeps! She took Rachel to the 12am premiere of “The Hunger Games.” No matter what challenge Beth is facing, no matter what stress she is facing, she ALWAYS has something funny to say, ALWAYS has a smile and laugh, ALWAYS has time for others, ALWAYS enjoys a glass of wine, ALWAYS fights for the best interest of her daughters, ALWAYS makes you feel important in her presence. Her daughters are a reflection of the SUPER mom she is!
