Checking out: Primrose Student, scans items purchased for the Central Virginia Food Bank

Demonstrating their commitment to giving to others, the Primrose School at Westerre Commons and the Primrose School of Twin Hickory recently helped feed hungry families throughout the Richmond area. On Friday, November 16th students donated 391 pounds of food to the Central Virginia Food Bank.

“Children from Primrose Schools across the nation participated in food drives over the past month, but they did much more than simply bring in items from their parents’ pantry,” says Heather Moore, co-owner of both West End Primrose Schools. “Children, ranging in age from 2 to 11 worked hard doing chores at home in order to earn money for families in need. Children at our two locations alone, collected over $400.”

After counting all the money, Primrose school-age children made their shopping lists, focusing on items needed by the food bank, and finally took a field trip to the Short Pump Walmart Supercenter. The project was a great way to have children of all ages come together to make a difference for families in the Richmond area.

This donation comes when American families find themselves in critical need as men, women and children face hunger. According to Feeding America, a total of 36 million Americans struggle with hunger, including 13 million children.

Giving back to the community was a major focus of the annual food drive, as well as a key component of Primrose Schools’ Balanced Learning® curriculum, which blends teacher-directed and child-
initiated activities with special emphasis on character development. The Caring and Giving program is a nationwide initiative, with participation from more than 245 Primrose Schools across the country and helps students understand the value of generosity and creates a hands-on approach to math, nutrition and planning skills.

Primrose Schools know how difficult it can be to keep everything running smoothly – especially during summer months when school is out. But they also offer some great tips to help you support your child’s development of self-control and empathy, along with independence, by giving him or her options and making it fun to learn.

In their recent “Pointers for Parents” newsletter, they offer these suggestions to help kids all year long:

• Be a role model. Take advantage of your toddler’s desire to mimic you by modeling responsible actions. As you do these things, talk about why it’s going to be helpful to you and/or to others.
• Assign simple tasks. Ask your child to help you pick up toys, put napkins on the table or throw paper into the recycling bin. Once again, talk about how her efforts help you and others. Completing tasks that have meaning will contribute to her confidence, and plant a seed about the importance of helping others.
• Connect actions to consequences. The next time your child does something you don’t like, first ask yourself why she did what she did? Is it something you may have contributed to? If so, explain the consequences of your actions for you and for her.
• Respond to their efforts! Encourage your child’s sense of responsibility by pointing out how important and appreciated his actions are. Say “thank you” when he does what you ask, and when appropriate, point out how his actions have helped others.

Make it fun for kids to learn by encouraging, recognizing, and rewarding them. Simple words like “thank you”, “great job”, and “I’m so proud of you” will make it easier for them to remember good manners.

When you read aloud to children, it stimulates language and cognitive skills, and builds motivation, curiosity and memory. It helps children build an appreciation for books as a source of entertainment, fun, and information. When you begin reading to children at a young age and encourage them to read, they typically learn faster than kids who aren’t exposed to reading and books at a young age.

Ann Richter of Primrose School at Twin Hickory agrees, “Reading to children when they are young helps them for the rest of their lives. It spurs growth and creativity in children and they have fun in the process.”

Kindergarten and other elementary school teachers all know the value of children who are read to at an early age. The Primrose Schools’ newsletter points out that “books contain more vocabulary than children typically encounter in spoken language. When you consider 50 percent more words appear in books than primetime television or even in college students’ conversations, it’s easy to recognize why reading aloud is important.”

The facts from the National Education Association (NEA) confirm that young children who are read to, have an advantage when they start school over children who are not read to. According to the NEA, children who are read to frequently from a young age are:

• more likel to recognize letters of the alphabet (twenty-six percent of children who were read to three or four times a week by a family member recognized all the letters of the alphabet)
• more likely to count to 20 or higher than those who were not read to(60% vs. 44%),
• more likely to write their own names (54% vs. 40%),
• and are most likely to read or pretend to read (77% vs. 57%).

This makes a significant difference in how well a child performs academically, emotionally, and creatively.

Reach out and Read

Earl Martin Phalen, CEO of Reach Out and Read, offers these tips for reading with children:

• Make reading part of your daily routine. Make it part of your nightly bedtime ritual, or find a special time in the afternoon to share a story.
• Talk about the pictures or ask your child to describe what they see in them. You don’t have to read the book to tell a story.
• Let your child turn the pages. Babies need help to turn pages, but your three-year-old can do it alone.
• Point to the words as you read. Run your finger under the words as you read them.
• Choose books that your child can relate to. Select books that relate to what is happening in your child’s world — starting preschool, going to the dentist or moving to a new home.
• Show your child the cover page. Use it to explain what the story is going to be about.
• Make the story come alive. Create different voices for each character.
• Take advantage of your local library. Sign your child up for a library card and make frequent trips to the library to check out books. You can expose her to thousands of (free!) children’s books. Check to see if the library offers story hours or special events!

You can learn more about reading out loud to children, and find valuable tips on selecting the most effective books for kids of all ages through Reach Out and Read.  Reach Out and Read is a national evidence-based nonprofit organization. They promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children, and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.

It’s about the movement away from play-based learning toward a “direct instruction” curriculum. This brings up some interesting points and raises controversy among some parents and educators.

While it may seem children would learn more from direct instruction, recent research has uncovered that early education which focuses too strictly on direct instruction and removes all play from its curriculum can actually hinder a child’s later successes and mental stability. At the opposite end of the spectrum, daycare facilities that offer little to no teacher initiated activities, leaving it entirely up to the child to learn from his surroundings. At these all-play institutions, children are not being given enough instruction to explore their abilities and talents.

We are left with two separate schools of thought, and while both are strong in opinion, they lack balance. At Primrose Schools, we believe in a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated activities.
