Primrose Schools has been voted as Richmond’s #1 resource for parents by Style Weekly readers in the category of Best Preschool or Daycare.

And there is a good reason for that. They offer outstanding child development services, including Private Kindergarten and much more.

AdvancED™ Corporation Systems Accreditation

In June 2012, Primrose Schools became the first organization to earn AdvancED™ Corporation Systems Accreditation based on the New Standards for Quality Early Learning Schools, the highest-level accreditation an early learning school can receive. This ensures each Primrose school meets high standards specific to early learning, development and care. The Standards focus on how well schools prepare children for future success, as well as how they address the health and safety of children in the school.

You can check them out for yourself and register your child to participate in this state-of-the-art child development center. All Primrose area locations are registering for fall classes (see list of all locations and contact information below).

Primrose Atlee Commons Open House

Primrose Atlee Commons is holding an Open House on Saturday, July 20, 2013 which will also include a preview for their Private Kindergarten program on the same day.  Their Kindergarten teacher will be available for parents to meet and to discuss their program from 10am-12 noon.

Reprinted  from Primrose ‘Pointers for Parents’ Newsletter

Primrose students and families are sharing their love of reading by donating books through their Og’s Bountiful Books program. They would like to see every child start a love affair with books.

Studies have shown that children first fall in love with books by having a special reading time at home every day. This bonding time builds shared memories, and is the single most influential way to positively impact your child’s literacy development and future success in school.

Here are some ways to nurture a love of books:

  • Before birth: Did you know it’s even good to read to unborn children? Research shows babies actually show a response to books that were read to them while they were in the womb. What better way to let a baby know she’s loved than to hear your voice as you read a book over and over again before birth? Your intonation and the cadence of your voice as you read will have a lasting effect.

Try: How Do I Love You? by Marion Dane Bauer

  • Age 0–1: Make reading books part of your child’s bedtime routine. Children this age need sturdy board books that invite their participation. Hold your child in your lap as you read to make it a warm, snuggly and connecting part of your child’s day.

Try: Peek-A Who? by Nina Laden

  • Age 1–3: You can captivate your toddler’s attention by making your reading dramatic. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to read the same book over and over every night. Children this age just seem to know they need that repetition to strengthen the connections they’re forming in their brains. After several repeats, your child will start chiming in on refrains and completing rhymes — proof his mind is growing!

Try: Book! by Kristine O’Connell George

  • Age 4–5: Preschoolers are ready to discover the magic of books for themselves. Go to the library together to “try on” different authors, and encourage your child to check out a variety of books.

Try: The Red Book or A Splendid Friend Indeed by Barbara Lehman

The Art of Giving http://richmondmom.com/2012/12/12/the-art-of-giving/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/12/12/the-art-of-giving/#comments Wed, 12 Dec 2012 21:15:51 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=36366 Thanks to Primrose Schools for the following article, originally posted in their Pointers for Parents newsletter.

The holidays offer multiple opportunities to model and highlight the importance of giving back for our children. As parents, we must strike a balance between the joy of giving and receiving gifts and helping our children understand the true meaning of caring and generosity.

Here are a few suggestions of ways to invoke the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

  1. Make time. The holidays can be a hectic time filled with special events, parties and travel. Making time to stop and include your child in local charitable activities will build memories and an appreciation for the difference we can all make—even in small ways. It may be volunteering at a local charity or involving your child in holiday baking for the neighbors. Talk to your child about why these acts of kindness are meaningful and be sure to respond to any questions with simple and concrete answers.
  2. Make it a tradition. Holiday customs are a part of the season and can give your child a better understanding of your family’s values and traditions. When at least one of those traditions is an act of sharing, you are teaching your child a powerful lesson about the power of giving that she can carry with her the rest of her life.
  3. Read. There are plenty of books out there that will help your child better understand the art of giving. Reading is one of the best ways for your child to better understand the concept of generosity. Here are some recommendations from Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of Education and Professional Development for Primrose Schools:
    • A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams
    • Because of You by B.G. Hennessy, illustrated by Hiroe Nakata
    • The Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need (First Time Books®) by Stan Berenstain
    • Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson, illustrated by Fumi Kosaka

PRICELESS: Primrose Preschoolers Raised Over $400 for Central Virginia Food Bank http://richmondmom.com/2012/11/24/priceless-primrose-preschoolers-raised-over-400-for-central-virginia-food-bank/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/11/24/priceless-primrose-preschoolers-raised-over-400-for-central-virginia-food-bank/#comments Sat, 24 Nov 2012 21:24:15 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=35530

Checking out: Primrose Student, scans items purchased for the Central Virginia Food Bank

Demonstrating their commitment to giving to others, the Primrose School at Westerre Commons and the Primrose School of Twin Hickory recently helped feed hungry families throughout the Richmond area. On Friday, November 16th students donated 391 pounds of food to the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Food Bank Delivery: Students deliver food to the Central Virginia Food Bank

“Children from Primrose Schools across the nation participated in food drives over the past month, but they did much more than simply bring in items from their parents’ pantry,” says Heather Moore, co-owner of both West End Primrose Schools. “Children, ranging in age from 2 to 11 worked hard doing chores at home in order to earn money for families in need. Children at our two locations alone, collected over $400.”

After counting all the money, Primrose school-age children made their shopping lists, focusing on items needed by the food bank, and finally took a field trip to the Short Pump Walmart Supercenter. The project was a great way to have children of all ages come together to make a difference for families in the Richmond area.

This donation comes when American families find themselves in critical need as men, women and children face hunger. According to Feeding America, a total of 36 million Americans struggle with hunger, including 13 million children.

Giving back to the community was a major focus of the annual food drive, as well as a key component of Primrose Schools’ Balanced Learning® curriculum, which blends teacher-directed and child-
initiated activities with special emphasis on character development. The Caring and Giving program is a nationwide initiative, with participation from more than 245 Primrose Schools across the country and helps students understand the value of generosity and creates a hands-on approach to math, nutrition and planning skills.
