Impact100rvaSometimes the simplest ideas grow into something really powerful.

Talley Baratka had exactly that idea:100 women donating $1,000 each to transform 1 nonprofit with $100,000 grant.

Now in it’s fifth year, Impact 100 has doubled the impact with 200 women (both individuals and circles ) giving $1,000 each to present two nonprofits with $100,000 grants.

By pooling the money together, Impact 100 is able to make a stronger impact to organizations which focus on women and children’s issues in the areas of: Education, Family, Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, and the Environment and Sustainability.

The yearlong process culminates with the Big Give, happening Tuesday, May 13, where members will hear brief presentations from the finalists – then vote and award the grant on the spot.

The four local nonprofits will be hoping to receive the generous grant:

Education: Higher Achievement, which is striving to close the educational opportunity gap during the pivotal middle school years. As a grant recipient, Higher Education would partner with the MathScience Innovation Center to update the science, technology, engineering and math curriculum. Aimed at better preparing underserved students in grades 5-8 for today’s rapidly changing careers, updated offerings would include new field trip opportunities and hands-on elective classes.

Environment: Boaz & Ruth, which offers training, transitional jobs and economic revitalization to rebuild lives in Highland Park. Boaz & Ruth would use the funds to restore, preserve and enhance the physical and natural surroundings of Highland Park’s North District to create a sustainable community. The grant would help revitalize a 10,000-square-foot row of historic buildings along Meadowbridge Road.

Family: Greater Richmond ARC, which works with families to create life-fulfilling opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. ARC would use the grant to build Richmond’s first all-inclusive park. Located on 2.4 acres in Northside, the park would fully accommodate individuals with disabilities and welcome those without.

impact 100 give-diagramHealth & Wellness: Faison Centers of Excellence, which aims to maximize the long- term potential of people with development disabilities through research, training, and job and residential opportunities. The grant would support the July launch of the Faison Residence, where 30 percent of the 45 apartment units will be rented to tenants with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurological needs. The gated complex will feature a “virtual village” that leverages state-of-the-art technology to connect on-site, trained professionals with these tenants as they pursue semi- independent lives.

Impact 100 begins in May raising money for the 2015 Big Give.

After the Big Give event, Richmond women will have invested $600,000 in the community in it’s five years. Impact 100 invites all women who want to make a difference in their community to become a member.

Fas Mart®’s Million-Dollar Scratch Card Game has two parts:

  1. An in-store component where customers purchase a specified product, such as a candy bar or soda, to receive a scratcher card and can instantly win cash prizes by scratching off the right boxes; and,
  2. A second chance to win $1 million – by submitting a code from the bottom of the scratcher card to www.WIN1MM.com. Every game piece has the potential to be a winning card for various cash prizes ($1, $2, $5, $10, $50 and one $1 million card) in a game that includes $5 million in potential prizes.

Fas Mart® has about 20 stores in the Metro Richmond area so there are plenty of locations to visit!

“Fas Mart® is all about speed and convenience, helping busy consumers get what they need so that they can get on with their day,” said Bill Reilly, senior vice president, marketing for Fas Mart®. “We’ve designed this promotion for shoppers in a hurry – scratch and go.”

Reilly also emphasized the online component of the promotion. “We’re urging people to play online for another chance to win as well as to vote to make a significant impact on a worthwhile nonprofit.”

Can You Lend a Helping Hand? HandsOn Day 2013 is October 29th http://richmondmom.com/2013/10/04/can-you-lend-a-helping-hand-handson-day-2013-is-october-29th/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/10/04/can-you-lend-a-helping-hand-handson-day-2013-is-october-29th/#comments Fri, 04 Oct 2013 20:56:35 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=49673 HandsOn RichmondIf you can only participate in one event to help others this year, then HandsOn Day 2013 might be the perfect event for you! It’s Saturday, October 29, 2013 and it’s a day of helping others with hands-on projects and making a difference.

What is HandsOn Day?

It’s a day when people come together to work for the good of others. Volunteers complete necessary work with more than 50 different projects available. They include projects with nonprofit, government, and community organizations – and even schools! There are projects in many different areas including projects working with animal rescue organizations, faith based projects, children’s programs, hospice, eldercare needs, healthcare, parks & recreation, and much more. Click here for a complete list.

Who Volunteers?

Everyone!

Volunteers receive supplies and no special skills are required – just a big heart! Volunteers can create teams with friends and family, or work with other people they’ve never met. There are plenty of places to volunteer. Registration closes 24 hours before the day. You can download more details here.

There are some projects that require minimum ages so check those out. Some projects require ‘minimum age with adult’ meaning that an adult can register and volunteer with a youth. It’s a great way to engage kids in giving back to the community and learning more about volunteering.

Learn More

Visit HandsOn Greater Richmond to learn more and to register. You’ll feel great about volunteering and you’ll help someone else live a better life! You will find a list of participating groups on the website too.

Fresh Air Fund Gives NYC Inner-City Children an RVA Experience http://richmondmom.com/2013/08/17/fresh-air-fund-gives-nyc-inner-city-children-an-rva-experience/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/08/17/fresh-air-fund-gives-nyc-inner-city-children-an-rva-experience/#comments Sat, 17 Aug 2013 15:57:32 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=47690

fresh air fund

Richmond resident and mom, Nicole Harwood, recently opened her heart and home to Kiana, of Staten Island, through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. Thanks to dedicated volunteer host families in the Richmond area, like Nicole, 15 NYC children enjoyed a summer outside of the city and all that Richmond has to offer. They hope to recruit more dedicated host families for next summer – and remind Richmond residents about simple summertime joys of The Fresh Air Fund.

“She had such a positive presence in our home,” remarked Nicole Harwood, of Richmond, VA, when discussing her experience hosting a Fresh Air Fund child this summer. For ten days in July, Nicole and her daughter, Chandler (5), welcomed Kiana (6) into their home. “We told her that she’s part of the family now. Kiana and my daughter were instant friends.”

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income neighborhoods since 1877. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program.

Harwood kidsKiana’s visit to Virginia was laden with learning experiences and outdoor fun. “The girls went to a camp program during the day,” Nicole says. “They played outside all day, and Kiana learned how to swim.” Leaving the chaotic concrete jungle of New York City behind, Kiana was able to appreciate the serenity and wildlife of the country. “I took the girls to the Richmond Metro Zoo,” Nicole recalls. “My daughter is used to seeing nature, but Kiana was mesmerized by it.”

Regardless of the day’s agenda, Kiana was always content. “Kiana was enjoying every bit of it,” Nicole says. “She really fit in everywhere she went. She did the talent show at camp, and she loved running through the water sprinklers at Stony Point Fashion Park.” One moment during Kiana’s stay was particularly memorable for Nicole. “Kiana and Chandler were dancing and playing music in the living room. Kiana approached me and asked, ‘am I dreaming’? I said ‘No, why?’ She replied ‘Because I’m having so much fun.’ Before I even realized it, tears were rolling down my eyes.”

While each day during Kiana’s stay was jam-packed with exhilarating activities, plenty of excitement was still provided at night. “We went to a jazz concert at the Wilton House Museum,” remarks Nicole. “The girls would play with Barbies and play dress up in the evenings. They would sleep together and giggle all night.”

Harwoodkids2After such an amazing ten days, both parties were emotional during their farewells. “We were all crying when she had to leave,” says Nicole. “I had no idea how much she would impact our lives.” Nicole and Chandler called Kiana the day after she returned home. “It was just nice to hear her voice again. We can’t wait to welcome her back next summer.”

The Fresh Air Fund is always seeking host families to enable as many New York City children as possible to benefit from a summer outside of the city.
To learn more about how to become a host family in the Richmond area, please call Mary Beth Deutsch at 804-285-3354 or visit The Fresh Air Fund.

About Tricycle Gardens

Tricycle Gardens is a grassroots, environmental nonprofit organization focused on bringing agriculture, nutrition education and healthy food access to the urban core of Richmond, Virginia.  Founded in 2002 by three architects living in Church Hill who believed community gardens, and the simple act of growing food, were the fastest ways to transform the overall health of their community – both for the residents and the environment.

DowntownShortPump.comThe goal of Tricycle Gardens is to transform abandoned, overgrown urban lots into sources of food and opportunities for economic development in low income neighborhoods.  Starting with a group of friends and neighbors planting one community garden on a vacant lot owned by The Better Housing Coalition; Tricycle Gardens has grown into four community gardens, three learning gardens, a green house at Bryan Park, a ½-acre urban farm and a 3,000 sq ft edible forest garden at the Science Museum of Virginia.
