There is a range of postpartum disorders that can develop anytime during the first year after your baby is born. These disorders can result from social stressors and biological factors. It is important to know that postpartum disorders are temporary and can be successfully treated with professional help.
When many people think of postpartum depression, they often only consider what is sensationalized by the media: a severe and very rare form called postpartum psychosis. The more common forms often go unreported or are overlooked, leaving women and families to suffer needlessly.

Every year, millions of people volunteer for clinical trials. A clinical trial is a research study carefully designed to answer specific questions about vaccines, new medications or new ways of using known medications. Clinical trials measure the medication’s ability to treat a medical condition and how safe it is to use. Individuals participate in clinical trials for many reasons, some of which include:
  • They may learn more about their medical condition
  • They may gain access to treatments that are not available to the public
  • They want expert medical care (physical exams, diagnostic tests, lab tests and physician advice) at leading health care facilities, which is often available at no cost
  • They may want to help in discovering new medicines or treatments for themselves, family members and their community
Does this sound like a good fit for you? Learn more about clinical research at VWC.

Chances are we’ve all heard (or used) one of the following reasons to delay an appointment or even skip a mammogram all together.
  • Mammograms are painful
  • The appointment for a mammogram will take too long
  • I’m embarrassed by my body and fear what the technologists will think
  • “No news is good news” and the fear of results

September 30: Osteoporosis http://richmondmom.com/2013/09/30/september-30-osteoporosis/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/09/30/september-30-osteoporosis/#comments Mon, 30 Sep 2013 11:00:48 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=48226 virginia women's centerOsteoporosis is a disease where bones become fragile and are more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, Osteoporosis can painlessly progress. Sometimes, the first symptom of Osteoporosis is when a bone breaks. Fractures in individuals with Osteoporosis typically occur in the hip, spine or wrist.
While men can develop Osteoporosis, it is a disease that is more prevalent in women. In women ages 50 to 59, 40 percent have low bone mass (Osteopenia) and 10 percent have Osteoporosis. In women above age 80, those numbers significantly increase and 90 percent have low bone mass (Osteopenia) and 60 percent have Osteoporosis.

September is “Fruit and Veggies – More Matters Month.” Here are some reasons why fruits and vegetables are important parts of a nutritious diet:
·         They are convenient and nutritious in any form – fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100 percent juice.
·         They may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.
·         They are rich in vitamins and minerals that help you feel healthy and energized.

·         They provide fiber that helps fill you up and keep your digestive system happy.

Indeed, stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior. When you recognize common stress symptoms, you can take steps to manage them.

September 16: Mammography http://richmondmom.com/2013/09/16/september-16-mammography/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/09/16/september-16-mammography/#comments Mon, 16 Sep 2013 11:00:50 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=48222 virginia women's centerOver the past couple of years, the debate over how often women should have mammograms has continued to change and evolve as the results of new studies have been presented. The result? Unfortunately, many women are confused – and rightly so, as different professional organizations have different recommendations.

At Virginia Women’s Center, we follow the guidelines of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and recommend that women over age 40 have a mammogram annually. As always, there are certain circumstances or family history that might warrant earlier or additional screening. It’s important to keep in mind that guidelines give us solid recommendations, but women’s health care isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition. One-on-one with your health care provider is the best way to determine what you need and when.
