A custom valance created by Sewinit
Karen Curcio moved to Richmond in the mid-nineties and landed a job in accounting where she’d always focused her career, but when in came time for retirement from the corporate world, she set her sites on something more creative.
After training that allowed her to create draperies for cottages at the Biltmore, she returned to Richmond and opened her business, Sewinit.com.
This not only changed her world from a working in a corporate environment to working in her home–it actually changed her home. She had a bedroom built out into a workroom filled with heavy-duty sewing machines, fabric swatches, threads in every color, pillow forms, and more tools to help her create.
In Karen’s opinion, when the customer starts collaborating with her early on. “It’s always smoother when we
can begin early, together, measure the windows and I can consult on the amount of fabric needed. Often my clients end up buying too much or too little when I could have saved them that trouble of returning to the store.”
In addition to draperies, she creates pillows, tablecloths, table runners, and even children’s blankets and other creations. Pricing is determined upon the size and complexity of the project, and Karen may be contacted via email to estimates. Don’t forget to mention your Savvy Saver card discount for a great discount on her custom work. For creative ideas on a variety of sewing ideas and home interiors, visit her blog:

Sewinit's Karen Curcio getting a silly hug from one of her grandchildren
When Karen Curcio retired, she didn’t sit for a minute in an easy chair and wait to watch the world go by. She blew out a bedroom in her home to create a workroom to design and sew draperies that adorn many homes all over Richmond.
After attending design school in North Carolina where she created custom draperies for some of the cottages lining the Biltmore, she launched Custom Draperies by Sewinit in Richmond. Now that workroom is filled with heavy-duty sewing machines, drapery lining and fabric samples galore.
Her amazing work includes custom pillows, curtains, bedspreads, shower curtains, and just about anything that needs to be sewn.
A simple valance like the one pictured at the left is a great way to create a beautiful look for less.
If you’ve never had custom draperies, you’re in for a treat if you work with her, not only does she have a creative eye, but she also has great ideas for saving money by creating designs that can use less fabric; some of those are pictured here. Many more, including custom nurseries, are pictured on Sewinit.com.
You can also save by using our Savvy Saver Card, request one here, free.
I’m pretty proud of her, and of course I’m biased–after all, she’s my mom! And as many of my friends and their friends can attest, she’s no “ordinary” grandma.
Karen recommends giving a lift to a bathroom as we spring into the new warmer season. Pairing a customized shower curtain with an existing or new window treatment is one way to go. Offsetting and contrasting color and pattern of floors, rugs, and other accessories can breathe new life into your bath. And adding a new customized shower curtain to a bathroom to emphasize ornate tiles, sparkling black granite countertops, or other surfaces can bring a room to life.
Be sure to use your Savvy Saver card to get savings at Sewinit’. We’d love to feature your creations here on our website, so be sure and send us photos when you update your look.
Contact Karen Curcio at 804.874.4008 for a free consultation and measurement. Be sure to “like” her Facebook page and you could win a gift certificate for $100 towards your purchases at Sewinit’.
