KIDS ZONE THIS WEEKEND

Includes Activities Powered by NASA, Science Museum and State Fair

September 6-7, 2013

va529RICHMOND — September 4, 2013 — Families attending this weekend’s Virginia529 Kids Zone at Richmond International Raceway (RIR) may rub elbows with two big names from racing and from space.

NASA associate administrator and retired astronaut Leland Melvin participated in two space flights in 2008 and 2009, logging more than 565 hours in space. He will answer questions about NASA and space on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the Virginia529 Kids Zone. Melvin also is the honorary starter for the Virginia529 College Savings 250 Friday night and will wave the green flag to signal the drivers to start. Following the race, spectators may notice NASA’s scheduled launch of the LADEE moon exploration spacecraft. RIR is a designated viewing area for the 11:27 p.m. launch from Virginia’s Wallops Island.

As a wild card contender for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, driver Joey Logano is hoping Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 will secure him a spot in the Race for the Chase. Before he suits up for the race though, he will read The Berenstain Bears and the Big Road Race at 4 p.m. in the Virginia529 Kids Zone.

Kids of all ages can enjoy a variety of other activities at the free Virginia529 Kids Zone. The interactive area will feature more than 20 hands-on science and technology activities for children and families to explore.

In the Virginia529 Kids Zone, children can:

  • Simulate a geyser using Mentos candy and explore other cool science concepts from the Science Museum of Virginia
  • Learn about gravity, flight and motion in NASA’s Rockets 2 Racecars exhibit
  • Pretend to be in victory lane and take a photo with the Virginia529 College Savings 250 trophy
  • Pet miniature farm animals and learn to rope a steer from the State Fair of Virginia
  • Burn off excess energy in several themed inflatable attractions

Families also can learn about saving for college from Virginia529 College Savings Plan (Virginia529). Virginia529 offers four tax-advantaged programs to help parents tame the Tuition Monster by saving for college in advance.

The Virginia529 Kids Zone is located outside the track along the Commonwealth Mall. Race tickets are not required for the Virginia529 Kids Zone and other midway attractions. Parking also is free.

Not only is September back-to-school for kids in K-12, it’s also another big month for college savings too. Whether your kids are 6 months, 6 years, 16 years old — or somewhere in between — college saving is an important topic to review in September.

September is College Savings Month!

va529That’s right, back to school means one year closer to college.  So it’s not only the kids that should be hitting the books.  With tuition rising at a higher pace than housing, energy and healthcare you might be wondering how you and your kids will afford it.  Planning ahead and saving as early and often as possible are the best ways to prepare.

Today is the best time for families to sit down and learn the best options out there to save for college and increase the chances for a continued education after K-12.  The options can be overwhelming, but a popular choice for families is saving in a 529 plan which offer additional tax benefits.  Virginia is lucky to have four highly-ranked 529 programs and  is a great resource for families to learn more.

College Student Debt: What to Expect http://richmondmom.com/2013/08/10/college-student-debt-what-to-expect/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/08/10/college-student-debt-what-to-expect/#comments Sat, 10 Aug 2013 20:58:56 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=47325 If you’re wondering how much it will cost to send your child(ren) to college in the future, you’re not alone. You can find answers to many of your questions below.

Author:  Graphic and article provided courtesy of Marcelo De Vivo

After the standardized tests, essays and applications are done, comes the waiting for the acceptance letter from the admissions committee. Once that’s received, the next big hurdle is securing financial aid. Paying for college can be one of the biggest challenges your family faces when it comes to securing a college education. With tuition costs rising every year (nearly 500 percent in the last 60 years), most students and their families are unable to pay for college outright. Financial assistance from the college is available to a small percentage of the students; private and federal grants and scholarships are also few and far between. A large percentage of students will end up relying on student loans in order to pay for their education.

Making sure that you and your matriculating student are well educated on the full cost of a loan is key to ensuring a sound financial investment. A loan, regardless of what kind, is something that will need to be repaid, and student loans often come due upon graduation. This means your children will be in debt before they even start working. So, before you start applying for loans, learn about the reality of the debt that affects millions of Americans right now. This infographic clearly lays out how the loan would impact your child’s financial future.

Children’s Museum Announces College Tuition Raffle – Eight Semesters prePAID! http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/20/childrens-museum-announces-college-tuition-raffle-eight-semesters-prepaid/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/20/childrens-museum-announces-college-tuition-raffle-eight-semesters-prepaid/#comments Mon, 20 May 2013 19:14:43 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=41988 VA529Richmond, VA (May 20, 2013) – The Children’s Museum of Richmond announced today that it plans to raffle four years of college tuition.  Tickets will be available starting May 29 with the winner drawn on June 30 receiving an eight semester Tier I Virginia529 prePAID tuition contract.  Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Children’s Museum’s free and reduced price admission program, which last year underwrote the cost of museum admission for 57,000 of the museum’s 360,000 visitors.  Raffle tickets will cost $45 each.

“We are thrilled to make a college education possible for a child while making the museum available to so many more children,” said Karen Coltrane, the Children’s Museum’s president and CEO. “We think the raffle reflects the Children’s Museum’s educational mission with a twist of fun and excitement.” The Museum hopes to sell 2,000 tickets during the 33 day campaign.

The museum is partnering with Virginia529 College Savings Plan, which is providing marketing support for the effort. “Virginia529 is pleased to provide an eight semester prePAID contract for raffle with the Children’s Museum of Richmond,” said Mary Morris, CEO of Virginia529. “What a great prize for the lucky winner – a full four years of tuition & mandatory fees covered at any Virginia public university.”  The value of the eight semester tuition contract will vary based on the age of the named recipient, but will be between $54,600 and $58,600.

James River Air is also supporting the effort. “As soon as I heard about it, I jumped at the chance to buy 100 tickets for my customers,” said Hugh Joyce, president of James River Air. The locally owned heating and air conditioning company will feature the Children’s Museum’s tuition raffle in its upcoming spring television promotion. “Where else can you have an excellent chance to win four years of college tuition for $45 while supporting a beloved community organization?”

Likewise, Capital One has offered support by helping develop social media strategies in support of the raffle. “We have a lot of experience in social media and it is nice to share it with an area nonprofit that does great work,” said Marc Mentry, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing for Capital One and a member of the Children’s Museum’s Board of Trustees. The plans created by Capital One’s brand team include pre-raffle promotions via Facebook and Twitter that will encourage people to share news about the raffle through their social networks and become eligible to win prizes including the very first raffle ticket.

Tickets will be available at all three Children’s Museum of Richmond locations and online through the museum’s website.

Virginia529 Plans Events for National College Savings Day in May http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/10/virginia529-plans-events-for-national-college-savings-day-in-may/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/10/virginia529-plans-events-for-national-college-savings-day-in-may/#comments Fri, 10 May 2013 15:44:10 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=41760 VA529An increasing number of parents are saving to fund their children’s college costs, according to the College Savings Foundation’s sixth annual State of College Savings survey. In addition, the use of tax-advantaged 529 college savings plans is growing. However, much work remains to be done, with the survey also finding two-thirds of parents expect their children to contribute more financially and more than two-thirds expect to rely on student loans to cover the costs of college.

To raise awareness about the importance of saving for higher education and the tax advantages of 529 plans, Virginia529 College Savings Plan (Virginia529) joins other 529 plans around the United States to celebrate 529 College Savings Day on May 29, 2013.

VA529 will Award $15,000 in Contributions

This month, Virginia529 will award more than $15,000 in contributions to college savings accounts to multiple winners.

    • Two $5,000 Virginia529 account contributions will be awarded, one to an existing Virginia529 account owner and one to get a family started with Virginia529.
    • In addition, babies born closest to 5:29 p.m. on May 29 at participating hospitals across the state will win accounts with $529 opening balances.

“This is our fifth year participating in 529 Day celebrations statewide,” said Mary G. Morris, Virginia529’s CEO. “We want families to start a conversation about college costs and get started saving. Families already participating with Virginia529 can check up on their accounts, consider making regular contributions via payroll deduction or automatic electronic deposits, or just commit to increasing their existing saving levels. And, we hope families saving for college outside a 529 plan will look at the advantages of using a 529 account as their primary savings vehicle.”

Types of Plans, Minimum Contributions, and More

Virginia529 offers four tax-advantaged college savings programs, including:

  • two investment programs
  • a prepaid tuition program
  • an FDIC-insured high-yield savings account program available through BB&T and Union First Market Bank®

Funds in Virginia529 programs can be used at public and private eligible educational institutions worldwide. The minimum contribution to open an account is $25 and contributions grow free from state and federal taxes when used for qualified higher education expenses. In addition, Virginia taxpayers may deduct up to $4,000 per year per account from individual state taxable income.

Prepay your cost of future college tuition, today

Open December 1, 2012 – March 31, 2013

UPDATE: APRIL 1, 2013 – DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 5, 2013

VA529Time is running out so hurry and take advantage of Virginia529 prePaid program! Be sure and use your Savvy Saver card to waive the registration fee. Also, click here to learn more about the great things experts are saying about Virginia’s college tuition program.

“Virginia529 College Savings Plan is your resource for Virginia’s tax–advantaged college savings programs. At Virginia529 we strive to make a college education more affordable for everyone. With four programs, we offer more options to more people.”

The prePAID program allows families to prepay future tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia public colleges or universities. Benefits are not limited to schools in Virginia, but the prePAID payouts are different based on the type of school attended – Virginia public, Virginia private or out of state – and may not cover the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia private colleges or out of–state colleges.

Accounts may be opened during a limited enrollment period each year and either the account owner or beneficiary must be a Virginia resident at the time the account is opened. Virginia529’s other programs are open year round with no state residency or beneficiary age restrictions. Account owners in a Virginia529 savings program may roll their investment into a prePAID contract during open enrollment if other eligibility requirements are met.
