UNOS: Life Saving Organ Donations to Benefit from Real Cute Kids http://richmondmom.com/2013/07/25/unos-life-saving-organ-donations-to-benefit-from-real-cute-kids/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/07/25/unos-life-saving-organ-donations-to-benefit-from-real-cute-kids/#comments Thu, 25 Jul 2013 22:11:57 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=46513 When it comes to saving lives, UNOS is one of the first places many people turn to for help. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is a vital link between people who donate and receive lifesaving organs, tissue, and eye donations.

While none of us want to even think about the loss of a loved one, many people live each day wondering if it is their loved ones’ last as they wait for an organ donor.

Paul Harris' family was just one of the participating donor families at the games.

Stories of those who have donated organs to save lives demonstrates the incredible courage and selflessness of thousands of people – but donors are needed every day. A story on Richmondmom.com about Paul Harris, who’s life was cut way too short, is an example of how organ donation touches many lives – with a ripple effect that spans generations. Organ donation is an incredible gift to individuals and to the world – allowing people to live longer and make a difference in the community and the world.

This year’s 2013 Richmondmom.com Real Cute Kids contest is proud to recognize UNOS as the recipient of a financial donation for each child entered into our contest. It’s one way that we can help further the critical need for organ donation. We encourage you to enter our Real Cute Kids contest to help us increase the financial donation available to UNOS. The Real Cute Kids contest is sponsored by the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, Romp n’ Roll, and Real Life Studios.

About UNOS

UNOS

United Network for Organ Sharing is a national nonprofit based in downtown Richmond which runs the nation’s transplant system matching lifesaving organs from deceased donors to those on the national waiting list.  This matching process happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  78 lifesaving transplants take place each day in this country thanks to the matching work being done by UNOS.

One organ donor can save 8 lives. There are six (6) lifesaving organs:

  1. heart
  2. lung
  3. liver
  4. kidneys
  5. pancreas
  6. intestine

In addition to organ donation, UNOS also has many needs for eye and tissue donation.

Currently more than 115,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants to save their lives. Thousands more are in need of tissue and cornea transplants to restore their mobility and sight.

Visit the website for information about the National Donor Memorial in downtown Richmond which honors organ, eye and tissue donors across the country. And take that critical step to become an organ, eye, and tissue donor by clicking here to provide hope.

Register for the Real Cute Kids contest and we’ll make a financial donation to UNOS to thank you! Thanks to our contest sponsors for making this possible.

Happy Birthday Children’s Hospital of Richmond http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/30/happy-birthday-childrens-hospital-of-richmond/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/05/30/happy-birthday-childrens-hospital-of-richmond/#comments Thu, 30 May 2013 19:15:32 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=44775 Happy Birthday Trace

Happy Birthday Trace!

In honor of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s 3rd birthday, we’re celebrating the many children whose lives have been impacted by our doctors, nurses and staff. Over the past three years, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) has treated children like Trace, the young infant born with a life threatening congenital heart defect, ensuring he, along with other children, can celebrate many healthy and happy birthdays to come. In fact, thanks to the expert care and treatment from a team of CHoR specialists, Trace’s life threatening heart defect is now fixed and he was able to celebrate his first birthday with a Wiggles themed bash.

“CHoR helped Trace celebrate a healthier, happier birthday by saving his life. No ifs, ands or buts about it,” said Trace’s dad, E.C. “Fifty or sixty years ago he wouldn’t have lived to see his thirtieth birthday. CHoR gave him over 50 more birthdays.”

At CHoR, treating children is what we do; it’s our mission, our specialty and our passion. We help children thrive so they can get back to the important aspects of being a kid, like playing and enjoying birthday parties. Help us celebrate all of Richmond’s children by posting a birthday photo of your child on our birthday Facebook tab. In the caption, tell us how CHoR has helped your child celebrate healthier, happier birthdays for a chance to win a free children’s birthday party (up to $250 value). While you’re there, design a special cupcake in honor of your child and join us in wishing many more birthdays to all of Richmond’s children.

Happy Birthday CHoR!
