KIDS ZONE THIS WEEKEND

Includes Activities Powered by NASA, Science Museum and State Fair

September 6-7, 2013

va529RICHMOND — September 4, 2013 — Families attending this weekend’s Virginia529 Kids Zone at Richmond International Raceway (RIR) may rub elbows with two big names from racing and from space.

NASA associate administrator and retired astronaut Leland Melvin participated in two space flights in 2008 and 2009, logging more than 565 hours in space. He will answer questions about NASA and space on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the Virginia529 Kids Zone. Melvin also is the honorary starter for the Virginia529 College Savings 250 Friday night and will wave the green flag to signal the drivers to start. Following the race, spectators may notice NASA’s scheduled launch of the LADEE moon exploration spacecraft. RIR is a designated viewing area for the 11:27 p.m. launch from Virginia’s Wallops Island.

As a wild card contender for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, driver Joey Logano is hoping Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 will secure him a spot in the Race for the Chase. Before he suits up for the race though, he will read The Berenstain Bears and the Big Road Race at 4 p.m. in the Virginia529 Kids Zone.

Kids of all ages can enjoy a variety of other activities at the free Virginia529 Kids Zone. The interactive area will feature more than 20 hands-on science and technology activities for children and families to explore.

In the Virginia529 Kids Zone, children can:

  • Simulate a geyser using Mentos candy and explore other cool science concepts from the Science Museum of Virginia
  • Learn about gravity, flight and motion in NASA’s Rockets 2 Racecars exhibit
  • Pretend to be in victory lane and take a photo with the Virginia529 College Savings 250 trophy
  • Pet miniature farm animals and learn to rope a steer from the State Fair of Virginia
  • Burn off excess energy in several themed inflatable attractions

Families also can learn about saving for college from Virginia529 College Savings Plan (Virginia529). Virginia529 offers four tax-advantaged programs to help parents tame the Tuition Monster by saving for college in advance.

The Virginia529 Kids Zone is located outside the track along the Commonwealth Mall. Race tickets are not required for the Virginia529 Kids Zone and other midway attractions. Parking also is free.

Not only is September back-to-school for kids in K-12, it’s also another big month for college savings too. Whether your kids are 6 months, 6 years, 16 years old — or somewhere in between — college saving is an important topic to review in September.

September is College Savings Month!

va529That’s right, back to school means one year closer to college.  So it’s not only the kids that should be hitting the books.  With tuition rising at a higher pace than housing, energy and healthcare you might be wondering how you and your kids will afford it.  Planning ahead and saving as early and often as possible are the best ways to prepare.

Today is the best time for families to sit down and learn the best options out there to save for college and increase the chances for a continued education after K-12.  The options can be overwhelming, but a popular choice for families is saving in a 529 plan which offer additional tax benefits.  Virginia is lucky to have four highly-ranked 529 programs and  is a great resource for families to learn more.

Submit your story of how you are Turning Dreams into Reality by using or saving with Virginia529 for a chance to win $2,529! Click here to learn more.

Open December 1, 2012 – March 31, 2013

UPDATE: APRIL 1, 2013 – DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 5, 2013

VA529Time is running out so hurry and take advantage of Virginia529 prePaid program! Be sure and use your Savvy Saver card to waive the registration fee. Also, click here to learn more about the great things experts are saying about Virginia’s college tuition program.

“Virginia529 College Savings Plan is your resource for Virginia’s tax–advantaged college savings programs. At Virginia529 we strive to make a college education more affordable for everyone. With four programs, we offer more options to more people.”

The prePAID program allows families to prepay future tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia public colleges or universities. Benefits are not limited to schools in Virginia, but the prePAID payouts are different based on the type of school attended – Virginia public, Virginia private or out of state – and may not cover the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia private colleges or out of–state colleges.

Accounts may be opened during a limited enrollment period each year and either the account owner or beneficiary must be a Virginia resident at the time the account is opened. Virginia529’s other programs are open year round with no state residency or beneficiary age restrictions. Account owners in a Virginia529 savings program may roll their investment into a prePAID contract during open enrollment if other eligibility requirements are met.

Virginia529 Announces Program Name Changes, Enhancements to Prepaid Tuition Program http://richmondmom.com/2012/11/19/virginia529-announces-program-name-changes-enhancements-to-prepaid-tuition-program/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/11/19/virginia529-announces-program-name-changes-enhancements-to-prepaid-tuition-program/#comments Mon, 19 Nov 2012 21:56:54 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=35446

At the end of the year, many people are looking for ways to invest money, prepare for upcoming tax returns, give tax-deductible gifts and donations, and give various types of gifts to kids for the many holidays in November and December. Now, there are more reasons than ever to consider a gift of money towards a child’s future college education with the Virginia529 College Savings Plan.

Virginia529 – the Virginia College Savings Plan – sponsor of the Commonwealth’s four tax-advantaged 529 college savings programs, announced that effective immediately:

  1. The Virginia Prepaid Education Program (VPEP) has been renamed Virginia529 prePAIDSM.
  2. Additionally, the program known as the Virginia Education Savings Trust (VEST) has been renamed Virginia529 inVESTSM.
  3. To complement these name changes, Virginia529 is introducing new logos supporting each program.

“These changes help reinforce the established Virginia529 brand while more clearly conveying the benefits of our affordable college savings programs,” said Mary G. Morris, Chief Executive Officer. “Virginia529 prePAID is an attractive solution for families looking for a reliable hedge against the rising cost of tuition and fees through a defined benefit program. Virginia529 inVEST is an affordable program offering a variety of investment options to meet many risk tolerances and college savings investment objectives.”

Virginia529 prePAID has a limited enrollment period and age and residency restrictions while Virginia529 inVEST is open year-round without age or residency restrictions.

In addition to the name changes, other enhancements are planned this year for Virginia529 prePAID, including:

  • The ability to purchase contracts in semester increments instead of full years, effectively cutting in half the cost of getting started with the program.
  • In addition, more flexible payment options have been added along with a Virginia529prePAID web calculator to be launched in advance of open enrollment.
  • Virginia529 prePAID will offer two levels of pricing for contracts – Tier I and Tier II – and prospective customers may purchase anything from a single semester at the lower Tier II price to Tier I and Tier II semesters in multiples and in combination, subject to certain maximum levels.

“With the rising cost of college and increasing student loan debt, Virginia529 is always looking for ways to make planning and saving for college more affordable and attainable,” said Morris. “Our new semester contracts will allow more families to take the first steps towards realizing their higher education goals.”

All Virginia529 programs offer the same state and federal tax advantages to help all families, including tax-deferred growth and tax exemptions for qualified distributions and state income tax deductions for contributions.

Prices start at $2,750 for a single prePAID Tier II semester contract (which will cover a full semester’s tuition and mandatory fees at a Virginia public two-year college or a fraction of a semester’s tuition and mandatory fees at a Virginia public four-year college or university) — and are available for purchase starting on December 1st and through March 31, 2013.

All Virginia529 programs may be used at any eligible educational institution around the country, but the benefits of a prePAID contract will vary depending on the school attended.

For more information on Virginia529 prePAID or to request materials or information on all Virginia529 programs, visit Virginia529.com or call 1-888-567-0540.

Virginia529’s two other college savings programs, CollegeWealth® and CollegeAmerica®, will retain their current program names and associated logos.
