Parents often need someone to look after the children for a few hours after school, or while they go out for a romantic dinner. Enter the babysitter.

But hang on – parents do not necessarily need to settle for just any babysitter. Did you know there are babysitters that can teach children a foreign language whilst looking after them? That’s right, children could learn while being looked after, and believe it or not, it is great fun and no more expensive than a standard babysitter.

This is the brain child of Sarra Lamloumi.

At the age of sixteen while growing up in France, Sarra started out as your every day babysitter. She quickly found that children showed great interest in the fact that she could speak English, and really enjoyed learning simple English words and phrases to impress the parents when they returned home.

Seeing a pattern fast evolving, Sarra did a little digging and discovered numerous studies where children showed an increased capacity to learn more than one language, even as early as twenty months. And if it could be made fun through the use of colours, drawing and playing games then the children could really take to it.

In 2006 Sarra moved to Croydon, South London, and with business degree and a host of experience and knowledge behind her began working with children full time. She is now just about fully NVQ Level 3 qualified in Childcare Services, running a French teaching babysitting service by the name of Little French Bears.

So what can the children learn? Well for young children it is often best to start with simple greetings such as “bonjour – hello” or colour using a “bleu – blue” pen. For the slightly older children greeting games can be introduced such as “je m appelle sarra – my name is Sarra”. And for the more advanced the babysitter can even help with preparation for school exams.

As more and more parents become aware of such babysitting services, it is obvious they see the value in them, especially when the cost is no more than a standard babysitter. And as awareness and demand grows, services like Little French Bears flourish creating more roles for babysitters that can teach French.
