Best Places for a Girls’ Night Out in Richmond

We stumbled our way through the holidays. The cold weather has kept us indoors (well, it’s kept me in, at least). There have already been a couple of snow days. And the kids’ school work and activities are in full swing. Moms, we need a break. More importantly, we need a girls’ night out!

It’s not that we don’t love being with our families, but there’s something special about being with our girlfriends. And a girls’ night out where we are free from the worries of kids and partners can be one of the most rejuvenating things we can do for ourselves. We can talk freely, relax a little, and, best of all, get some much needed support from friends who are all going through the same things.

Whether you and your girlfriends like to relax and chat or want to get wild and crazy, the Richmond area has just what you’re looking for. We’ve taken a look around to find some great spots that are perfect for a night out with no one but the ladies.

In order to make our list of Best Places for a Girls’ Night Out, each of the following five establishments had to meet certain criteria, including:

  1. A unique atmosphere
  2. Activities or options that go beyond “just dinner”
  3. Flexible hours and/or locations to suit group needs

If the winter blues have got you feeling cooped up and in desperate need of some time with your ladies, then start that group text today and get a girls’ night out on the books ASAP. Try any of these amazing Richmond spots, or if you have a favorite girls’ night out locale that we didn’t mention, let us know at cs@richmondmom.com!

CineBistro / Facebook

A night out at the movies is hard to beat. Especially if you haven’t seen anything that wasn’t animated since 2015. But a night out with your girlfriends at the movies is even better. And a night out at the movies with your girlfriends plus food and drinks? Well, that’s pretty much the best. At Cobb Ciné Bistro at Stony Point Fashion Park, you and your girls can catch the latest blockbusters complete with a snack or meal along with wine, beer, or the drink of your choice, all from the comfort of comfy reclining seat. And don’t worry, every chair comes with an adjustable tray so you can eat during the show. So really all you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy. Be sure to check movie times here.

Why we love them: I will admit, there was a time that I went to the movies just for the popcorn. But that was before I could get an entire meal and drinks served to me in a reserved theater seat. And at Ciné Bistro, you can even go online and reserve your seats ahead of time, so when you arrive, an usher is ready and waiting to escort you and your group straight to your assigned spots. From there you can order from their full menu and have your food and drinks delivered straight to your seat. As a heads up, you’ll need to arrive 30 minutes early to receive in-theater service as service will not be provided once the show starts. But, keep in mind that the restaurant and bar are open to the public, so you can grab food and drinks and enjoy a little extra “girl time” before of after the show, as well.

Secco Wine Bar / Facebook

If you and your girlfriends would describe the perfect night out as an evening of sipping delicious wine in a classy establishment, then you’re going to love Seccco Wine Bar. Located in The Fan, Secco is a local favorite for wine lovers thanks to their wide array of small-production Old World wines. But if wine isn’t your thing, they also offer cocktails, imported and local craft beers, Lamplighter coffee, and Carytown Teas. Then there’s the food. Ahhhh…the food. Featuring seasonal ingredients, farmstead cheeses, traditional charcuterie and house-made everything, Secco serves up Mediterranean-inspired dishes that, of course, pair perfectly with their wines.

Why we love them: Not every girls’ night out needs to be wild and crazy. Secco Wine Bar offers a chic, but casual retreat from the chaos of daily life. You and your gang can sit at the bar, grab a table in the intimate indoor space, or if the weather permits, sit out on the patio and laugh the night away. The space is calm and elegant without being pretentious, making it ideal for a relaxing night with girls who just “get you.” Be sure to ask about their Unplugged and Uncorked Happy Hour—if you’re willing to leave your cell phone in the Happy Hour box located on the table, you’ll get a dollar off wine, beer, and antipasti! Best of all, with hours from 5pm – 11pm every day of the week, you and the ladies will have no trouble finding a time that works for everyone.

The HofGarden

If you and the girls are looking for a fun bar and restaurant that is relaxed, but remains far from your standard dive, then The HofGarden will hit the mark. This German-themed bar and restaurant is not only eclectic and creative, but it serves authentic German food (pretzels and Bratwurst? Yes, please!) and offers three levels of fun. Head to the Beer Hall, take part in crazy fun in the Game Room, or chill out on the Rooftop Biergarten during the warmer months. Located inside of and on top of the historic Hofheimer Building in Richmond, The Hof Garden is perfect for a group of girls who just want to get out and have some fun in a super chill, but totally unique space.  Best of all, they’re open every day from 3pm to midnight with happy hour specials every day of the week.

Why we love them: Variety is the name of the game at The HofGarden. Not only can you enjoy a wide variety domestic and imported draft and bottled beers, but there are plenty of wines, ciders, and cocktails to choose from, as well. As for entertainment, if you just want some food and drinks, the Beer Hall is just right. But if your group is the competitive type, the Game Room offers foosball, shuffleboard, darts, and more to keep you all on your toes. Last but not least, the stunning rooftop bar and event space features live music, as well as their seasonal series of “Sunsets @ the Hof” which features DJs and dancing all night long. So whether you’re looking for a relaxed night or want to really get your “Bad Mom” moves on, The HofGarden has it all.

Havana 59 / Facebook

If you and your girlfriends’ dream of a tropical getaway together…but then remember that you have kids and budgets, Havana 59 is the perfect alternative. With its authentic 1950s Cuban décor, complete with vivid colors, live palms, crumbling plaster, and a hint of cigar smoke in the air, Havana 59 will transport you to another world. Gather your girls and enjoy a night (or a Sunday brunch) with incredible Cuban food and a diverse menu of cocktails, wine, and beer. If you decide to head out on a Thursday night, head to the second floor from 8pm-9pm for an hour-long salsa lesson, followed by dancing until midnight. If that’s a little late for a school night, be sure to check out their calendar of events for other options or just head out for their weekday happy hour specials from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.

Why we love them:  Havana 59 is more than just a restaurant. It’s an escape. You and your ladies will truly feel like you’ve entered a space that’s all your own. The food is amazing, the drinks keep flowing, and the atmosphere is vibrant and relaxed all at the same time. Best of all, as of December 8, 2017, Havana 59 now has a second location in the West End to complement their long-standing downtown location. So even if you have ladies coming from different parts of town, you’re sure to find convenience and fun—all under one roof.

Paint Nite / Yelp/ photo by Paint Nite

Ok, so this one is a little different, but we absolutely love it nonetheless. Although Paint Nite is a company that hosts events all over the country, what is unique about them is that they host events at local restaurants and bars. So while there is no set venue to visit, you’ll get the chance to explore all over Richmond and surrounding areas. The deal is, you get a group of girls together, you sign up for the event you want online at Paint Nite, and then you head out for a fun night of painting, food, and drinks. Talented instructors will walk you and your friends through a step-by-step process that results in a one-of-a-kind piece of original artwork that you can take home. If you have an especially big group (20+) or want to celebrate a special occasion, be sure to check out their Private Events.

Why we love it: The variety that this event offers makes it a surefire winner in our book. Because it is hosted at local restaurants and bars, you’ll not only get a chance to get out and try new places, but you’ll also have options all over the Greater Richmond area. Plus, because it is run locally, you’ll still have the chance to support local businesses. And remember, even if there are members of your group who don’t consider themselves “artsy,” everyone can be part of Paint Nite. They’ll provide the supplies and instruction—you and your girlfriends will provide the fun.
