For some families, a quiet backyard barbecue with close family and friends is the way to go. Others like to celebrate the holiday with a little more flash. But whether you’re looking for a quieter event or want to end the night with fireworks, there’s something for everyone here in Richmond.

To help you plan your Fourth of July festivities, we’ve taken a look at local happenings, festivals, and family-friendly Fourth of July events here in the Greater Richmond area. But we’ve also added in a handful of larger regional events in case you want to travel. From living history displays to parades to riverfront fireworks, we’ve made sure you’ll have no trouble finding the right event for your family.

Star Spangled Celebration at King’s Dominion

Doswell – Celebrate Independence Day at Kings Dominion with special events from Saturday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 4. Not only will you enjoy all of your favorite KD thrills rides, shows, and entertainment, but you’ll also see exciting live performances from military bands and daily fireworks that are bigger and better than ever. Plus, from June 30 through July 8, Kings Dominion will be honoring all service members with FREE admission to the park. Free admission includes all active and retired military, as well as veterans with honorary or medical discharge! Discount tickets are available for family and friends. Rocketts Red Glare

Richmond – This free, three-day event promises fun for the whole family! Events begin on Monday with Restaurant RiVAlry, a service industry night with competitions, including volleyball. All restaurant industry people are invited to attend. On Tuesday, July 3, The Rocketts Red Glare EVP Tour Beach Volleyball Championship will begin, featuring 24 professional two-person teams. The tour is open to the public from 12pm – 9pm. On Wednesday, July 4, watch the EVP Pro Beach Volleyball Championships from 8am – 8pm. Then be sure to stick around the for the grand finale fireworks at 9pm!

Flying Squirrels Independence Day Game and Dueling Fireworks

Richmond – What better way to celebrate America than with America’s favorite pastime? Head to the Diamond to watch the Flying Squirrels play the Akron RubberDucks and enjoy a stunning Dueling Fireworks display. First pitch is at 6:35pm. Tickets will sell out so be sure to get yours early! This event is hosted by Chick-fil-A Richmond and Virginia Birth Father Registry.

CarMax Free Fourth of July at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Richmond – Don’t miss your chance to enjoy FREE admission to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Visit special displays like Butterflies LIVE! and Origami in the Garden, plus enjoy live music from the Happy Lucky Combo, a parade, special events in the Children’s Garden and more. Chesterfield County Fourth of July Celebration

Chesterfield – Chesterfield County will be celebrating the Fourth with a fantastic evening of food, a kids’ activities area with games and inflatables (wristbands $5 each), special entertainment – and of course, fireworks! Events begin at 5pm at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds with fireworks starting as soon as it gets dark. Be sure to bring blankets and chairs. Admission is free!

Time: Gates open at 5pm and fireworks will begin at dark.

Cost: Free. Wristbands for children’s games and activities, $5/each.

Dogwood Dell Fourth of July Celebration

Richmond – Head to Dogwood Dell for Fourth of July music, fun and fireworks! This long-standing Richmond tradition is part of the annual Festival of the Arts and features performances by the Richmond Concert Band jazz group at 6pm, Declaration of Independence at 7pm, and the Richmond Concert Band at 7:30pm. Fireworks will begin at dark. For seats in the Dell, be sure to get there early. Blankets and chairs are recommended and picnics are welcome. If you can’t make it to the park, but still want to see the fireworks, be sure to find viewing spots along the James River and on Riverside Drive.

Fireworks on the James Paddle Tour (with RVA Paddlesports)

Richmond – For the best seat in the house this Fourth of July, join RVA Paddlesports for their special Fireworks on the James Paddle Tour! Head three miles down the James in rafts and stop for dinner at a deserted island about halfway down. Dinner options include fresh fruit, hot dogs, and s’mores, as well as both vegetarian and chicken options from Richmond restaurant Goatocado. Relax on the sandy beach, cool down in the river, or cozy up next to a fire and watch the fireworks at Dogwood Dell (beginning shortly after dark). After the fireworks show, paddle the remaining stretch of river. The tour ends around 10pm.

Fourth at the Fort

Fort Lee / Petersburg – Celebrate Independence Day with soldiers and their families at Fort Lee’s annual Fourth at the Fort extravaganza. The 392nd Army Band will kick off the festivities at 5pm, followed by food, a KidZone, more live music, and a fireworks show to wrap up the night. Please no pets, glass, backpacks, coolers, smoking, or tailgating. This event is free!

“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” 4th of July Reenactment

Richmond – See firsthand how founding fathers Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and others shaped the nation at the Second Convention of March 1775 where Patrick Henry gave his timeless “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” speech. This live re-enactment is given at the historic St. John’s Church and includes a special July 4th performance reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event is free but reserved seating is available. See below for details.

Cost: General admission is free. Reserved seating tickets are available for $5/person and can be purchased online here. All other seating is first come, first serve. No admittance after program begins or church is at capacity.

Independence Day at Pamplin Historical Park

Petersburg – Take a trip through history with a special Independence Day tribute at Pamplin Historical Park. There will be living history programs and demonstrations, a Civil War-era baseball game, and a Revolutionary War demonstrations by historical interpreters. See firsthand what life was like for Civil War soldiers and explore history on an authentic 19th century plantation. All 4th of July events are included with regular park admission.

Independence Day Celebration at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture

Richmond – To celebrate the 242nd anniversary of American Independence, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture is hosting a family-friendly day filled with patriotic events and festivities, including a large citizenship naturalization ceremony, live music, and much more. Last year, more than 1,300 people attended the event, so be sure to make your family part of this special celebration in 2018!

Red, White, and Lights Fourth of July Celebration

Henrico – The Richmond Symphony is back at an all-new location for their annual Red, White and Lights Fourth of July Celebration. Don your best red, white and blue gear, bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and get ready for a fun-filled evening at Dorey Park complete with live entertainment, food trucks, and children’s activities. Then once the sun goes down, enjoy a concert by the Richmond Symphony, accompanied by fireworks and laser light show!. This year’s event features a Family Fun Zone with a zip line, obstacle courses, inflatables, entertainers, photo ops, and much more.

Glen Allen – Celebrate the Fourth in style at James River Cellars Winery. Their Tasting Room will be open from 11am – 7pm and live music will be offered from 1pm – 5pm. Relax on the lawn, enjoy some wine, eat some delicious food, and celebrate your freedom! Live music will be offered by Zack Artis and food will be available from The Snack Wagon.

Urbanna – Start your Fourth of July party early with the annual Urbanna Independence Day Celebration. Festivities begin at 6pm at the Urbanna Town Marina. The event feature live music and food, followed by the annual boat parade featuring boats decked out in full patriotic décor. The boat parade begins at 7:30pm and at dark (around 9pm) the event wraps up with a fireworks spectacular. This event is FREE!

Williamsburg – There are few places better for celebrating the birth of our nation than Colonial Williamsburg – one of the places where it all began! Step back in time with special events and living history celebrations all day long. The day features a full schedule of patriotic festivities, including readings of the Declaration of Independence, musical performances, hands-on activities for kids, and an exhilarating fireworks display to close out the night. July 4th at Monticello

Charlottesville – Join family and friends at Thomas Jefferson’s historic home, Monticello, this Independence Day for a special celebration. Andrew Tisch, co-author of a new book on the American immigrant experience, will deliver a keynote address, followed by book signings with his co-author Mary Skafidas.

At this special event, visitors will have the chance to see one of only 26 surviving copies of the Emancipation Proclamation on loan from David M. Rubenstein. A special Jeffersonian Open House with free walk-through tours will be available from 11:15am – 1pm. House tour reservations are first-come, first-served.

Lees and Independence: Family Fun Festival

Stratford – Stratford Hall’s annual Family Fun Festival is back for another year of Independence Day fun. This free event features a huge array of family-friendly activities, live music including barrel train rides, fossil identification on the beach, geocaching activities, history tents featuring colonial games, a sign your own Declaration of Independence activity, and a scavenger hunt for kids. Local food and ice cream will be available for sale, plus children’s author, Jamie Borek, will be on hand to sign copies of her books.  Don’t miss this chance to celebrate the 4th of July at the home of the only brothers that signed the Declaration of Independence!

Liberty Celebration at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Yorktown – Celebrate our independence where it all began. Experience the 242nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown with a special line-up of events that includes tactical drills and artillery demonstrations, interactive military exercises, music, interpretive programs, and a firsthand look at challenges that faced our nation’s founders, including those who signed the declaration. See a complete list of scheduled events here.

Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser

Smith Mountain Lake – See the lake light up this Fourth of July with the annual Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser. The event will be held at Parkway Marina and features an evening of family fun, including live music by The Worx, the YMCA Kids’ Zone, The Parkway Marina Carousel, and a dazzling fireworks display at the end of the night. See a schedule of events here.
