According to the National Chicken Council (yes, that’s a thing), Americans consumed more than 92 pounds of chicken per capita in 2017. Needless to say, chicken is popular, especially in quick service and fast food restaurants. As you can imagine, to stand out in this industry, you need to offer something pretty special. Cue Zaxby’s to center stage.
If you’ve spent time in the Southeast, then chances are you’ve come across a Zaxby’s. Founded in the 1990s in Statesboro, Georgia, Zaxby’s now has over 900 stores in 17 states, including Virginia. This relative newcomer to Richmond’s quick service food scene first made an appearance about two years ago, but has already grown to include five Richmond area locations – and we have a feeling it won’t stop there.
Zaxby’s ever-increasing popularity comes down to a few simple things: taste, quality, and service. Recently, we had the chance to visit the new Zaxby’s on Nuckols Road in Glen Allen. And here’s what we found:
What Sets Zaxby’s Apart
Zaxby’s is part of a growing trend of “quick service” restaurants. These restaurants don’t provide table service and you’ll get your food quickly, but they definitely aren’t serving fast food. In fact, everything at Zaxby’s is made-to-order – from the chicken meals to the salads. And so, sure you might wait five to ten minutes for your food compared to five minutes or less at standard fast food establishments, but we think you’ll find that the wait is worth every second.
Plenty of Options, Quality Food, and Exceptional Flavors
With a menu that focuses on chicken, you might question just how much variety there could really be. But somehow Zaxby’s finds a way. With options that include their signature Chicken Fingerz, Wings, Sandwiches, “Zalads,” and “Zappetizers,” it’s not hard to find something for everyone, including gluten-free and vegetarian options.
At Zaxby’s, you’ll find items that go far beyond the standard chicken-sandwich-and-fries combos we’ve become used to. For example, while Zaxby’s crinkle cut fries are always an option, you also have choices like Spicy Fried Mushrooms, Fried White Cheddar Bites, Onion Rings, and our personal favorites – Tater Chips, thick, hand cut, fresh-fried potato chips served with your choice of Buffalo Chicken Dip or Ranch Sauce.
For your main meal, go for chicken tenders or wings with nine “tossing” sauces ranging from spicy to sweet and another five signature dipping sauces. And please note that when we talk about “chicken tenders,” we’re not talking about bite-sized, processed nuggets, rather large pieces of all white meat chicken that have been hand-breaded and cooked to perfection. We would say you don’t even need the sauces – but honestly? You’ll want them for their sake alone.
If sandwiches are your thing, try a Cajun Club, a signature special like their Southern Sweet & Smoky chicken sandwich, or a Chicken Finger sandwich served on a toasted brioche bun. As for salads, Zaxby’s offers four signature salads (with or without chicken) and nine dressings. For the record, bring an appetite, because these salads are a meal by themselves!
Of course, we can’t leave out the kids. Zax Kidz Meals are designed for kids 10 and under and come with an entrée, crinkle fries, a drink, and a special dessert. It’s not a large menu but speaking as the one person on the planet with a child who couldn’t care less about most chicken fingers, Zaxby’s Kiddie Cheese (a perfectly grilled cheese sandwich on Texas Toast) was a relief to find. Best of all, portions are more than adequate for older kids so you won’t be stuck with a nine-year-old who’s hungry 10 minutes after he’s done eating.
With today’s busy schedules, there are times when your only options are fast food or cereal for dinner. And believe me, we get it. But so does Zaxby’s. When opening new stores, they choose locations that are family-friendly, knowing that no one needs good food at good prices more than a busy family. To further enhance their service, they offer a quick and easy to-go option. Simply call, order online, or use the Zaxby’s app (available in the Apple iTunes store and Google Play) to order ahead, then pick your food up at a designated window inside your local restaurant. And that’s dinner done!
Want to dine in? The layout and décor of Zaxby’s restaurants are clearly designed with the ease and comfort of families in mind. Big windows, clean and spacious dining rooms, and plenty of tables and booths make you feel right at home – even with kids in tow.
Zaxby’s does more than just sell chicken, they engage in their local communities. From hosting fundraisers for local school groups and community organizations to sponsoring local sports teams, Zaxby’s believes in being a part of their daily customers’ lives, both in and out of their restaurants. If you’re interested in learning more about some of the opportunities they provide, be sure to call your local store, or contact Zaxby’s here.

Enjoying great chicken in an atmosphere where you could be yourself? That’s what childhood friends Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley wanted to achieve when they founded Zaxby’s back in the 1990s. Many years and locations later, Zaxby’s is still delivering on that promise: to serve delicious chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads in a fun, offbeat atmosphere where we welcome customers as friends. As of September 2018, Zaxby’s has grown to nearly 900 locations in 17 states and is headquartered in Athens, Georgia. For more information, visit zaxbys.com.
