Best Rooftop Bars and Dining in Richmond

Now that summer is here, many of us enjoy the prospect of dining outside. And while there are many amazing restaurants with decks, patios, and other outdoor dining options in Richmond (see our Best Patio Dining Restaurants in Richmond for examples), there are a few places that take outdoor dining to new heights – quite literally. And so today, we’re going to take a look at some of Richmond’s very best rooftop bar and dining options.

Now, unlike most of our Best of Richmond lists, the following spots do tend to be more of a parent’s night out option, rather than family-friendly. But grown-ups need to have fun, too. So whether you’re looking for a fun place to add to your list of go-to’s, have out-of-town guests you’d like to impress with some cool city views, or want to spice up date night with something a little different, these five rooftop bars and restaurants will more than do the trick.

Like all of our lists, we always like to make sure that our top spots offer something special to set them apart. In this case, the five following rooftops all had to have:

  1. Exciting food and beverage options
  2. Great views
  3. A unique ambiance

Each of the following places provided just what we were looking for. And while they’re each very different in their own way, one thing remains true across the board – once you visit, you’re going to want to keep coming back for more. Of course, no one can control mother nature, so be sure to call ahead if there’s bad weather to make sure these summer hot spots are open!

5. Rooftop Deck at Postbellum

As a tribute to their name, Postbellum combines postbellum-era cooking methods with recipes that have been modernized with fresh, local ingredients, making it a foodie’s paradise any time of the year. But when the weather warms up, head to the rooftop deck for an ambiance that’s as delightful as the menu. While Postbellum does not offer the height or exhilarating views that some of our other rooftop destinations do, Postbellum does provide a stunning menu, family-friendly availability, and a chance to enjoy world-class food in a lovely outdoor setting. As Richmond highest rooftop bar, Kabana Rooftop is set 20 floors above the city streets, overlooking Richmond’s financial district. Lined with sleek couches and glass panels, the rooftop patio offers a contemporary, urban feel. Likewise, the indoor bar and lounge provides an equally sophisticated experience for enjoying light fare and unique drinks. Kabana Rooftop is definitely geared towards a more grown-up crowd, but with that being said, its wide range of craft cocktails, beer, wine, and small, lounge-style snacks make it a perfect spot for a much-needed date night, a boys’ night out, a girls’ night out, or a catch up with friends. You can even reserve VIP seating for special outings or occasions. Also, keep in mind that after 9pm, Kabana is 21+, but they do offer special events, including their Father’s Day special, coming up June 16. The Graduate Hotel Richmond, located downtown near VCU, is known for its funky retro decor and outstanding service. So it’s no surprise that they would also offer one of the coolest rooftop bars around – The Byrd House. This rooftop pool and bar not only offers a “byrd’s” eye view of the city, but it provides an array of one-of-a-kind cocktails and small plate snacks that are perfect for sharing while relaxing with friends. Again, you’ll have to keep in mind that The Byrd House is for a 21+ crowd, but if you’re looking for a night out without the kids or want to catch a sunset with 360-degree skyline views, then this is the place to do it. The Byrd House is seasonal and is open from mid-April through mid-November, weather permitting, of course.

2. Q Rooftop Bar at Quirk Hotel

Q Rooftop
Quirk Hotel

The Quirk Hotel, set in an old department store in downtown, is all about sleek lines, open spaces, and a stunning vintage/retro/modern/chic decor. And while the hotel and its in-house restaurant, Maple and Pine, are experiences in and of themselves, if it’s a parents’ night out your looking for, head upstairs to the rooftop. Q Rooftop Bar offers a truly unique setting with a large open patio filled with couches, cozy chairs, and tables that mimic the hotel’s refined ambiance. Best of all, you don’t have to be a guest of the hotel to enjoy the stunning views, specialty cocktails, beer, wine and casually elegant food offerings.

Like some other spots, the rooftop bar is for those 21+, but they do offer special events, including a Father’s Day Low-Country Boil coming up this Sunday, June 16. Find the details on our list of 2019 Father’s Day Events in Richmond.

1. Rooftop Bar at The HofGarden

The HofGarden
The HofGarden

The historic Hofheimer Building in Scott’s Addition is not only an awesome event space, but it’s home to The HofGarden  – a German-themed bar and restaurant that is not only eclectic and creative, but it serves authentic German food and offers three levels of fun. Head to the Beer Hall, take part in crazy fun in the Game Room, or our personal favorite, chill out on the Rooftop Biergarten and Pizza Bar. A more casual option than some of the other spaces on our list, the Rooftop Bar at The Hof offers relaxed picnic tables and umbrellas for dining, playing games, or just socializing with friends and family. With a live music series throughout the summer, even the kids can come along to enjoy the views – and the fun. Of course, if you’re looking for a kids-free night out, the rooftop doesn’t disappoint, offering a vibrant nightlife including “dancing under the stars” Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (in season) starting at 8pm.
