]]>We know that, after weeks of quarantine, everyone is itching to get out of the house. However, we also know that to be safe, sticking to outdoor locations that allow for ample distancing from others is the best way to go. Fortunately, one of the best things about Richmond and the surrounding areas is that many of our most beautiful attractions are a perfect fit.
Of course, you’ll want to call ahead or check websites to make sure the following places are still open to visitors, and keep in mind that many of the public amenities (toilets, picnic shelters, playgrounds, etc) may be closed. However, at our last check, most of these fantastic spots were available for visitors during the day. Just remember to keep your distance from other visitors and be safe!
And so without further ado….enjoy the Best of Richmond Outdoors: Social Distancing Edition!
If you’ve already worn out the sidewalks of your neighborhood and exhausted every walking path within a three-mile radius, it’s time for something new. Some of our favorite family-friendly hiking trails in the state just so happen to be right here in the Greater Richmond area – or within an hour’s drive or less. We picked our favorites based on the following features:
Consider this list to be your own personal weird and wonderful scavenger hunt! With all of these wacky sites located in Richmond (or within a 45 minute drive), you can easily make a day of finding and exploring all five of our favorite unique sites. We picked each of these sites because they offered:
See the full list (and get the backstories!) here.
If there’s any silver lining to the current Coronavirus crisis and subsequent quarantine, it’s that many families are rediscovering family activities – like bike riding! While it can be tough to get everyone to stick together on busy neighborhood streets, a dedicated bike trail can offer a safe, fun ride for the whole family. Fortunately, we’ve found five amazing family-friendly trails for you to choose from, each with:
While biking, hiking, and exploring are all fun, a day outdoors doesn’t have to be spent working up a sweat. And we can’t think of any better way to relax in the great outdoors than a good old fashioned fishing trip. So grab your poles and tackle box and try one of our favorite Richmond-are fishing spots, each which features:
Last but not least, keep it simple, keep it fun, and keep it easy – pack a picnic! Picnics don’t have to be anything more than some simple sandwiches and snacks to become a memorable outing for the whole family. Picnics are especially nice if you have little ones who may or may not be able to participate in some of the more rigorous activities listed above – but even with older kids, picnics are a way to change things up, spend time as a family, and enjoy some fresh air. Keep in mind that we initially chose our favorite spots because they all offered:
However, most parks have closed playgrounds, picnic shelters, and public restrooms – so be sure to bring a blanket to sit on and – as always, keep your family a safe distance from other visitors!
While we may not be able to take full advantage of all the Richmond has to offer at the moment, be sure to visit our entire Best of Richmond series to make a list of must-do activities for the future!

]]>The post Best Volunteering Opportunities in Richmond During Quarantine appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>However, there are many others that are experiencing a very different scenario. Loss of income caused by business shutdowns has led to incredible financial stress for small businesses and created increased food insecurity for already vulnerable populations. Likewise, there are some families that are not able to participate in a full quarantine. Essential workers, including those in healthcare and retail industries still in operation, find themselves fearful of exposure not only to themselves, but to their families and they worry about a shortage of supplies and resources.
We know that the need for volunteering has not gone away, but with social distancing rules in place, many of us are wondering how we can help. Many volunteer organizations have been forced to cease normal operations due to health concerns, fundraisers have been put on hold, and regular volunteer opportunities have dried up. Fortunately, there are still ways to give back to the community and support those in need.
And because April is National Volunteer Month, we not only wanted to highlight some of the many ways you can volunteer – even from home – but we also wanted to recognize the thousands of ongoing volunteers right here in Richmond who give tirelessly of their time, money, and energy to ensure that everyone in our community has the help they need.
Be sure to check out our highlighted volunteer opportunities below, and if you don’t find something that suits, visit HandsOn Greater Richmond to find ongoing volunteer opportunities with hundreds of organizations throughout the Richmond area.
While Greater Richmond area food banks and food-relief organizations have had to alter their normal operating procedures for the time being, they are still dedicated to providing much needed supplies for those experiencing food insecurity, including families, children, the elderly, and shut-ins. The following leading food-relief organizations are all offering ways for your to volunteer while maintaining social distancing practices.
As one of the core nonprofit organizations in Central Virginia, Feed More has continued to be deemed and essential business, allowing them to continue their vital operations. As such, their staff, Agency Network members, and volunteers can continue to collect, prepare and distribute food to our neighbors in their times of need. Here’s how you can be part of their important mission:
Nearly 22 million low-income children around the country rely on free and reduced-price meals provided by schools. In Virginia alone, nearly 18 million meals have been missed since schools closed and more than 450,000 kids have been affected by the loss. Fortunately, No Kid Hungry continues to work to provide these much needed meals. While they do not accept food donations, they are able to turn every $10 in donations into up to 100 meals for children in need.
All of Virginia’s 132 school districts are currently offering distribution programs. Across the state, there are over 900 food distribution sites run by school districts and community organizations working to connect students with meals. School divisions are offering a variety of food distribution models to help safely connect students with meals, including “Grab and Go” service at schools and food delivery along bus routes.
While these are just three of the main food and assistance programs in the Greater Richmond, there are many more organizations that are doing what they can to fight food insecurity during the COVID-19 crisis. Be sure to visit our list of Food Pantries in Greater Richmond to learn about additional organizations and contact them directly to see how you can help.
Quarantine and social distancing is creating a shortage in many areas – including our blood banks. The American Red Cross has placed an urgent call for blood donations as the need for blood has not decreased and many patients, new and existing, are in critical need. One of the best ways of volunteering right now is simple – give blood, platelets, and plasma.
However, keep in mind that to meet the health requirements of the current situation and to support social distancing, the American Red Cross does require scheduled appointments. Currently, they are working hard to open new donation sites and recommend searching up to 14 days out. If you are in good health and eligible to give blood, please consider scheduling an appointment to donate blood, platelets, and AB elite plasma.
*If you are a fully recovered COVID-19 patient, you may be eligible to donate plasma to help current COVID-19 patients.
Medical research has shown that people who have fully recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus. The American Red Cross is currently working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to evaluate “convalescent” plasma from recovered patients as a treatment source for those currently suffering with severe, or potentially severe, COVID-19 infections. If you are fully recovered, please click here to learn more about how you can help.
The Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund, started by the Community Foundation and the Emergency Management Alliance of Central Virginia, stepped up at the start of the crisis to provide essential support to community organizations and public agencies that continue to meet the needs of individuals and families most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their primary goal is to support organizations and public agencies that are addressing urgent needs associated with the pandemic such as health care, housing, food access, childcare and senior care. Already, they have awarded more than $1.1 million in grants to support front line organizations, including those that offer the following:
While the Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund is not creating specific physical volunteering positions themselves, they do provide resources to connect you to other organizations that may need help. Be sure to visit the Community Foundation website for more information and remember that monetary donations are a great, easy way to volunteer, especially now!
Monetary Donations: Your donations today will help support the Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund now and in the future, allowing them to continue to provide support as the long term effects of the pandemic continue. To donate, click here.*
*Please note that United Way will also be matching up to $100,000 in donations made to the fund through their website.
In our wonderful world of technology, we have the chance to access nearly anything from home – even volunteer opportunities! HandsOn Greater Richmond has long been a trusted source for volunteer opportunities, providing hundreds of ways for adults, children, and families to give back in their community. It’s thanks to them that we’ve found the following virtual / online volunteering resources:
Book Share – Bookshare helps people with dyslexia, blindness, cerebral palsy, and other reading barriers gain access to the written word. Donate your time and skills by scanning, proofreading, describing images, or providing support for Bookshare teachers and families

Zooniverse – Zooniverse allows individuals to participate in research of all kinds, from classifying galaxies to counting penguins to transcribing manuscripts. Choose from thousands of projects and contribute as much or as little as you would like. Learn more about volunteer opportunities here.
Points of Light Virtual Volunteering Opportunities – Points of Light is the world’s largest volunteer network. During Global Volunteer Month (April), they are highlighting virtual volunteerism as a means of continuing their support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Find ways you can volunteer near you, or around the world, here.
Good Deeds Day Virtual Volunteering Opportunities –While Good Deed Day typically highlights a single day each year to do good deeds for those in your community, they continuously provide ideas and ways to enact kindness throughout the year. Click here for their list of ways to volunteer online or virtually during the current crisis.
Volunteering doesn’t have to be a grand act or require much money or time. It can be as simple as checking in on those around you. If you have elderly neighbors or family members, you can call them to see what they might need. Perhaps you can mow their lawn or do other yard work. Maybe you can pick up groceries to leave on their doorstep the next time you’re at the store. Have a sewing machine? Make masks for local healthcare workers, as well as friends and family. Volunteering can even be as simple as taking some sidewalk chalk with you on your next family walk and leaving encouraging messages in your neighbors’ driveways.
Just remember that during this crisis, whether you’re in quarantine or you’re on the front lines, we can all find ways to bring joy to those around us. Whether it’s providing food to those in need, giving blood, donating money to vital organizations, volunteering our professional skills, or simply doing small acts for those near us, every little bit counts. We are all experiencing this crisis differently, but we’re all in it together. And together, we can come out on the other side as happier, kinder versions of ourselves.

]]>The post Best Natural Remedies for Cold and Flu appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>To choose our favorite natural remedies for cold and flu, we looked for items that:
Of course, again, we want to stress that more serious conditions, such as sinus infections, bronchitis, meningitis, and strep throat often have symptoms similar to that of the common cold. If you or your children experience severe symptoms, or simply don’t seem to be getting better, be sure to contact your doctor or other medical professional.
Honey has long been used as a natural cough suppressant and soothing agent for sore or scratchy throats. Healthline reports that giving children a dose (10 mg or about 2 teaspoons) of honey at bedtime can help ease coughing. Reduced coughing will also allow for better sleep, which might be the best natural remedy of all. Likewise, a number of recent studies, including one reported by the Mayo Clinic, shows that honey works as well as over-the-counter medications for soothing coughs.
Last but far from least, honey contains natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help with a variety of ailments and lend to illness prevention. However, please remember, honey should not be given to children under the age of one because honey often contains botulinum spores, which can result in infant botulism in babies.
Ways to use honey as a treatment:
When it comes to natural remedies, saline, or simply put, “salt water” can be a surprisingly effective. Salt water works by drawing water out of oral tissues, thus pulling out harmful pathogens and bacteria and creating a “salt block” that prevents them from re-entering. Likewise, gargling with a salt water solution or flushing it through nasal passages can help to reduce and loosen mucus, which also contains bacteria and allergens.
Salt water can be used for sore throats (the salt helps alleviate scratchiness and soreness), as well as for viral respiratory infections like colds, sinus infections, and even some allergy symptoms. While salt water will not cure an existing condition, by drawing out harmful toxins, it can certainly be helpful in reducing discomfort and preventing further illness.
Ways to use salt water as a treatment:
Ginger not only tastes great when used a flavoring (it can be a bit spicy on its own), it also offers incredible anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it an ideal natural remedy. In fact, ginger has been proven to help with a variety of conditions including congestion, nausea, colds, and even fevers.
Ginger helps lower the risk of infections thanks to gingerol, the bioactive substance found in fresh ginger that inhibits the growth of many types of bacteria. Everyday Health reports that ginger also inhibits rhinovirus, which can cause the common cold. Likewise, thanks to its anti-nausea properties, ginger is great for those already suffering an upset stomach due to post-nasal drip or other effects of a cold or flu.
Ways to use ginger as a treatment:
Garlic does more than just keep vampires away! These pungent bulbs contain powerful antioxidants, as well as antimicrobial, antiviral, and antibiotic properties. Plus, garlic packs a punch of minerals, enzymes, vitamin C, sulphur, and selenium, all of which help in the prevention and treatment of colds and flu. In fact, garlic is one of the earliest known natural remedies for fighting illness and infection, dating back as far as 2000 B.C.
Taking a garlic supplement or simply adding tons of fresh garlic to your diet can help reduce the severity of cold symptoms. And some studies suggest that a daily dose may even help prevent you from getting sick in the first place.
Ways to use garlic as a treatment:
When it comes to fighting colds and flu, a strong immune system is where it all starts. However, even the best of us fall victim to the occasional infection, which depletes our body’s natural Vitamin C-generating abilities. And while studies have varied about the role Vitamin C plays in actually preventing or reducing cold and flu symptoms and duration, taking the right amounts of Vitamin C can help our body rebuild its natural infection-fighting mechanisms.
The best part about Vitamin C is that it is a naturally occurring ingredient in many of the fruits and vegetables we consume on a daily basis. Citrus fruits, leafy greens, broccoli, cantaloupe, cauliflower, kale, kiwi, papaya, red, green or yellow pepper, sweet potatoes, strawberries, and tomatoes are all foods found to be rich in Vitamin C.
Ways to use Vitamin C as a treatment:
We hope our entire Richmond Mom community is staying happy and healthy this cold and flu season. But if you find yourself fighting the many ailments common this time of year, we hope a few of our favorite natural remedies will help! In the meantime, if you’re looking for more natural ways to ward off infection and illness, be sure to see our Best Soups for Fighting Cold and Flu, along with our Homeopathic Resource Guide for Common Childhood Ailments for more great natural remedies.

]]>The post Best Unique Date Ideas in Richmond appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>The simple truth is that date night matters. Setting aside time for your partner without kids, work, and the usual chaos of family life helps to keep you in sync with one another and your relationship as a whole. And naturally, unique date ideas are something we all look for – especially when you’ve been with your partner for a long time. After all, even the happiest of couples needs to spice things up every now and then. But coming up with new fun and affordable ideas can be tough.
Most of us can agree, the key to a good date night isn’t just the setting, but the experience it provides. So when it came to looking for unique date night options here in Richmond we looked for locations that provided the following:
The following five unique date night ideas more than met our requirements. Best of all, they offer a range of options to suit nearly any couple – from those that want a more upscale, romantic experience to those that just want to get out and have some good old-fashioned fun.
Take a look at our favorite unique date night ideas for the Richmond area, and if you’re still looking for Valentine’s Day options or inspiration, be sure to check out our lists of Romantic Things to do in Richmond, Best Date Ideas in Richmond and Beyond, and of course, Best Romantic Restaurants in Richmond.
There was a time when a “couple’s escape” would have meant a Caribbean getaway and cocktails on the beach. These days, we’re lucky to “escape” for a few hours away from the kids. That’s why we love escape rooms for a unique date night. Escape rooms have become all the rage, not just in Richmond, but nearly everywhere. These interactive, live puzzle games require communication, teamwork and problem solving that will give you and your partner a chance to finally solve a mystery other than “which kid put a toaster waffle in the dog’s water bowl.” Together, you and your partner will enter a single room where you will need to find clues and solve riddles in order to “escape.” Most escape rooms provide a one-hour time limit, making this an easy way to enjoy some quality time together – and still have time to grab dinner before relieving the babysitter.
Most escape rooms have a two person minimum (usually around $25/person) but allow for up to six or even ten people, so you can make it an experience for just the two of you – or grab some friends and make it fun couples’ night out.
Best of all, there are escape rooms all over the Greater Richmond area, so even if you don’t live in the city, there are options near you. Here are some of the escape rooms located in the Greater Richmond area:

You’ll find that whenever we make a list of great date nights or romantic spots for couples, we almost always include Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). In fact, this amazing museum tends to show up on many of our “best of” lists. But it’s easy to see why. When it comes to a unique date night, this world-class art museum offers a chance to add a little culture and romance back into your lives. After all, not only is VMFA an elegant architectural masterpiece in its own right, it also houses one of the best collections of fine art, sculpture, and special exhibitions found anywhere, including one of the world’s largest Faberge egg collections. Best of all, admission is always free.
Make your night special with a stroll through the outdoor Sculpture Garden, view and discuss the expansive art displays, then perhaps, end your evening with a delightful dinner at Amuse, the museum’s exclusive fine dining restaurant. Bowling may seem like a rather passé suggestion. After all, bowling is what you do with the kids on a rainy Saturday, right? Well, River City Roll has taken bowling to the next level – specifically, unique date night level. This boutique bowling alley (who knew that was even a thing?) elevates bowling with elegantly casual decor, 20 lanes for bowling, complimentary tabletop shuffle board and skee-ball, and live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Not only can you and your partner enjoy some friendly competition (lanes are $35/hour on Friday and Saturday nights and shoe rentals are $4.50), but you can also enjoy a gourmet dinner as soon as your game is done. Far from the hot dogs and pitchers of beer you might expect at a bowling alley, River City Roll offers a full-menu of delicious, restaurant quality seasonal food and beverages, including fine wine, craft beer, and specialty cocktails. And as we mentioned, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays feature live music, so be sure to check their calendar and start planning your date night now.
Hours: Monday-Thursday, 3pm – 11pm; Friday, 3pm – 1am; Saturday, 11am – 1am; Sunday, 11am – 11pm. Family hours are until 7pm daily, after 7pm, 21+ only.

No one wants to play games in a relationship – unless those games happen to be good old fashioned video arcade games at The Circuit Arcade Bar. The Circuit is Richmond’s first dedicated retro and modern arcade bar featuring a funky, old school vibe complemented by ultra-modern amenities. In our humble opinion, when it comes to unique date night ideas, it doesn’t get much better than Hotel Greene’s fully-immersive “time travel” experience. But add in, as they call it, some “high-falutin’ mini-golf” and you’ve got a date night for the record books.
This new mini-golf/restaurant/bar opened in July 2019 at the former John Marshall Hotel, which lends itself well to the venue’s fictional backstory of a once grand hotel, now fallen on hard times. Once you enter the lobby, you’ll be transported to the year 1932 as evidenced by the vintage details on the bellhop uniforms, the lingering elegance of the velvet sofas, and the faded but majestic decor.
And then there’s the mini-golf. After teeing off in the lobby (rounds are $15/person), you’ll follow the course throughout the “hotel” as if you were headed to your fictional room. You’ll wind your way through the spa, down the hallways, and past a bank of elevators (which now serves as a shot station – and yes, we mean shots of liquor). All the while, roaming servers are ready to take your drink orders and deliver them to you on the “green.” To further enhance the immersive nature of the experience, you’ll find visual and video art installations along the course, telling the hotel’s mysterious and unsettling story of decline.
And of course, either after your game or while you wait to tee off, don’t miss a chance to settle in the lobby where you can choose from sofas, tables, or seats at the bar to enjoy cocktails, wine, beer, and authentic period-inspired food.
Hours: Tuesday-Wednesday, 5pm – 11pm; Thursday, 11pm – 11pm; Friday, 11am – 12pm; Saturday, 10am – 12am; Sunday, 10am – 11pm. After 5pm, admission is 21+ only.

]]>The post Best Turkey Trot and Fun Run Races for Thanksgiving in Richmond appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>A Turkey Trot is a running or walking event that can range anywhere from short distances to all-out marathons. Often, these races are backed by a cause such as food donations for the holidays, community building, or the promotion of healthy lifestyles. But whatever the reason for these races, they’ve become a tradition for many families. And while some races are a bit more formal with race bibs and chip-timing, many offer a fun run/walk option, as well. This means that the whole family can be a part of the event – not just those who run or train all year round.
If you’re looking for a fun way to spend time together as a family this Thanksgiving (or perhaps need to get out of the house for a bit thanks to family who came into town earlier than you might have liked!), consider signing up for a turkey trot. Not only will you start the day with a healthy dose of exercise and fresh air, but you might just start a new family tradition.
To help you find a turkey trot or fun run in the Richmond area for Thanksgiving 2019, we took a look around and found five great options. The following turkey trot races offer a range of causes and intensity levels, allowing you to find one that will work for your family.
To make our list, we looked for turkey trot options that offered:
The following five turkey trot races are not only designed to be fun, but they are a great way to support the local community, get some exercise, and create lasting memories as a family. Take a look at our list and if you know of a great turkey trot that we might have overlooked, let us know! Send us an email anytime at cs@richmondmom.com.
2019 marks the 42nd running of Richmond’s Turkey Trot 10K. This event is hosted annually by the Richmond Road Runners Club and, this year, features sponsorship by Wegman’s. Even though this is one of the longer and more challenging races on our list, it’s still accessible to everyone. You can choose to run the hilly 10K course that loops around the campus of the University of Richmond and neighboring streets – or you can walk. Please note that if you choose to walk, you’ll need to finish the 6.2-mile course in under 2 hours (19 minutes per mile pace). Water stops are available every two miles or so and sports drinks and snacks will be provided at the end of the race. As for kids 10 and under, be sure to sign them up for the FREE Kids’ Fun Run – everyone will receive a medal!
What’s the cause?
This year’s Richmond Turkey Trot 10k is supporting FeedMore, Central Virginia’s core hunger-relief organization and food bank. All runners and volunteers are asked to bring jars of peanut butter and/or cans of tuna to donate on race day. All collections will be given directly to Feed More to support their ongoing efforts. If you would prefer to give a monetary donation, the option to donate directly to Feed More will be available during registration.
Race Time:
November 28, 2019
8:30am – Start of Kids’ Fun Run
9am – Start of 10k
Location:
University of Richmond – Tyler Haynes Commons
28 Westhampton Way
Richmond, VA 23173
The Richmond Turkey Trot 10k will be held on the University of Richmond campus with some of the route extending through neighboring streets. Parking will be available on campus in the lots adjacent to the Robins Center and the baseball field. From there signs will direct you to Tyler Haynes Commons for check-in and the start/finish areas.
How to sign up:
Registration is available online until race day, November 28. If online registrations are not sold out (there is a 1,600 entry limit), you can also register onsite the morning of the race. Starting November 1, there is a $40 registration fee (+ processing) for Richmond Road Runner Club members and a $50 registration fee (+ processing) for non-members. The Kids’ Fun Run is free to kids ages 2-10, but registration is required using the link listed above.
All participants in both the 10k Turkey Trot and the Fun Run will receive a medal and 10k Turkey Trot participants will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt while supplies last. This is a chip-timed race, so there will also be prizes for the top finishers. Get all of the details here!
The 8th Annual Thanksgiving Day Pipeline 5-Mile Fun Run and Walk, sponsored by the Race Team RVA Running Club, is perfect for the whole family – even those of us who don’t like to run. This super-casual “race” doesn’t feature formalities – no race day marshals, no race bibs, no race t-shirts, no timing chips, no awards, and no entry fee – but it does offer tons of fun and some great scenery. While advertised as a five-miler, the race course takes you on a loop over the James River pipelines in downtown Richmond, over the 14th Street Bridge, then along the Slave Trails for about a one mile before returning to the starting line, making the total distance closer to 10k. But, because it’s intended to be all-inclusive, you can run or walk the whole thing, or just a portion – it’s your call.
What’s the cause?
This race is all about bringing the community together for some fun, healthy outdoor exercise. So, while the intent is to have a good time, why not do some extra good along the way? Participants are asked to bring canned goods or dry food items that will be donated to the Salvation Army following the race.
Race Time:
November 28, 2019; 7am meeting time
Location:
Civil War Museum
480 Tredegar St
Richmond, VA 23219
Meet in the parking lot beside the American Civil War Museum on Tredegar Street, across from Brown’s Island at 7am. The race will start from the parking lot.

For a race that’s fun, beautiful, and offers a glass of wine at the end, the New Kent Winery Turkey Trot is a winner across the board. The only catch to this run/walk is that it’s not on Thanksgiving Day, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preference. However, if you’re looking for a turkey trot for the whole family, but are concerned about using up a chunk of your Thanksgiving morning, then the New Kent Winery Turkey is a great way to get in the Thanksgiving spirit before the big day. Not only will you have the chance to run or walk through the beautiful tree-lined streets of Viniterra and the gorgeous vineyards of New Kent Winery, but you can stick around after the race for live music, food trucks, and a fun, family day at the winery.
What the cause?
A portion of race proceeds will benefit the race’s sponsor, Bridging Communities. Bridging Communities Regional Career & Technical Center provides high school students with academically challenging and specialized technical education skills and training, allowing them to gain industry certifications and gain meaningful entrance into the workforce, specialized trade programs, community college, or four-year institutions.
Race Time:
November 23, 2019; 10am race start; live music, food trucks, and post-race activities from 11am – 2pm

Registration is available online until race day, November 23. Registration fees are $25 for those 21+ (price includes a glass of wine at the end of the race) and $18 for under 21 – but be sure to sign up soon, because the price will increase after November 11!
The 2nd Annual West End Orthodontics Turkey Trot is a fantastic way to get your Thanksgiving Day started as a family while supporting a great cause. This fun, four-mile race is the only chip-timed turkey trot in the West End – so be sure to bring your competitive spirit, but keep in mind that it’s also easy enough for kids, novice runners, and walkers with two loops on a two-mile course through Glen Allen’s beautiful Crump Park. Best of all, it’s family-, dog- and stroller-friendly! Following the race, stick around to enjoy post-race bagels, hot chocolate, and awards before heading home to enjoy your own Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends.
What’s the cause?
As the sponsor of the West End Orthodontics Turkey Trot, Dr. Frank Iourno Jr. DDS, MS and his team at West End Orthodontics in Glen Allen is proud to support the We Heart Harlie & Friends Foundation, a local non profit foundation whose mission is to offset the financial strain of medically fragile children. ]]>The post Best Uses for Leftover Halloween Candy appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>Not only is it possible to clear the house of the candy overload, but we’ve got some ideas that will teach kids some great lessons about sharing, donating, and creativity along the way. In this week’s Best of Richmond installation, we’re looking at ways to limit post-Halloween sugar comas in fun ways that not only engage your kids, but make everyone feel good about giving up some of those sugary treats.
To make our list, we looked for organizations and activities that offered the following criteria:
Of course, some of these ideas might go over better with older kids who understand the underlying principles you’re trying to instill. We know all too well that trying to convince a three- or four-year old to give back the candy that they worked so hard to collect on Halloween night might be a little easier said than done. But with another candy-heavy holiday just around the corner (I’m looking at you, Christmas), now is a great time to get the idea of candy portion control in place. Who knows, you might just start some new traditions along the way!
There are a number of organizations that collect candy and send them to military service men and women serving around the world. Candy is included in a variety of care packages that you can send yourself, or donate to existing organizations that assemble and send packages on a regular basis. Here are a few of our favorites:
Operation Gratitude sends care packages to deployed troops and first responders throughout the year and likes to include candy in every package they send. They rely heavily on their annual Halloween candy give-back program to keep their candy supply up. To donate your leftover Halloween candy, you can collect it yourself or start a candy collection campaign at your local school, church, or other organization. Operation Gratitude also accepts hand-written thank you notes, as well as donations of floss, travel size toothpaste, pens and mechanical pencils.
Once your candy and any other supplies are collected, ship your packages no later than November 8, 2019 to:
Operation Gratitude
Attn: Halloween Candy Program
21100 Lassen Street
Chatsworth, CA 91311-4278
For more details about the program, how to collect and send your donation, or to find existing candy drop-off locations in the Richmond area, click here.
Soldiers’ Angels is a non-profit organization that provides support and care for active military members and veterans. During the month of November, they accept candy donations that will be shipped to deployed service members around the world and distributed to veterans in VA Hospitals across the country. Donations can be collected through a larger organization like a school or local business or you can ship your donations as an individual to support a good cause, allow your kids to earn buyback prizes, and receive a tax-deductible receipt. With four Richmond area drop-off locations, donating is simple. Get all the details here.
Current drop-off locations and times include:
With candy collection that runs year-round, Operation Shoebox keeps our troops feeling loved and remembered, especially during holidays when they can’t be with their families. Collecting and donating your unwanted candy couldn’t be easier – simply gather individually wrapped candies, and send them to:
Operation Shoebox
8360 East Highway 25
Belleview, FL 34420
Operation Shoebox volunteers will collect all donations and include them in care packages sent to deployed troops all year long, so definitely keep them in mind for other holidays like Christmas and Easter.
Through local chapters across the country, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) provides essential care and support for families with a child or other family member receiving medical care at hospitals and medical centers that are out-of-town. They help to alleviate some of the financial and emotional strain that accompanies caring for a sick family member by offering affordable lodging, meals, and a home-like environment.
Here in Richmond, RMHC offers lodging, a Family Room at VCU Medical Center, and a sibling center. Throughout the year, they collect donations to help support their mission. Consider contacting Richmond’s RMHC chapter to donate your leftover or excess Halloween candy and bring a smile to the faces of families experiencing difficult times.

The Halloween Candy Buy Back Program started as a way to promote dental hygiene by offering kids a chance to earn rewards for candy they give back to local dentist offices after Halloween. However, since they formed more than a decade ago, they have grown to include other organizations, as well. When a dentists’ office or other local business signs up as a Halloween Candy Buy Back participant, they agree to give kids rewards, and sometimes even money, as a means of encouraging them to skip the candy and think about their overall health. Candy collected from these organizations are then sent to deployed service members.
What we love about the Candy Buy Back Program is how it offers multiple learning opportunities. Not only can you teach your kids about giving back (i.e., giving candy to the troops), but you have a unique opportunity to teach them about making choices (i.e., choosing a reward that is healthier than sugar-loaded candy).
To find a Halloween Candy Buy Back Program participant near you, click here and enter your zip code at the top of the page.
The Switch Witch is a little bit of “Elf on the Shelf” and a little bit of the Tooth Fairy rolled into one. This GOOD witch visits kids after Halloween and exchanges their leftover Halloween candy for a special toy or present. The idea of the Switch Witch has taken off in recent years, and today, several companies offer books introducing families to their very own witch. You can find a variety of different Switch Witch dolls and books on Amazon or visit the “Original Switch Witch” here. This idea is also a great option for families dealing with medical conditions like diabetes or food allergies.
Who hasn’t worn a macaroni necklace at some point in their parenting career? And if pasta can be re-purposed, then why not candy? There are all sorts of fun crafts you and your kids can do using Halloween candy. Consider having your kids “donate” candy to a designated crafts box, then use it to prep for upcoming holidays or save it for creative projects throughout the year. We’ve provided a few simple suggestions below, but a simple Pinterest or general internet search will offer even more great ideas.
Looking for even more ways to do something other than binge with your Halloween candy? Don’t forget places like nursing homes, homeless shelters, food pantries, hospitals, and other local community support groups that might be interested in taking some of those extra sweet treats off your hands! Just be sure to call first in case there are any restrictions or guidelines regarding donations.

]]>The post Best Coffee Shops in Richmond appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>In recent decades, coffee has undergone a gourmet transformation – and with that transformation has come the emergence of coffee shops of every kind. These days, coffee shops are everywhere, serving up exclusive roasts and specialty drinks that take the humble coffee bean to a whole new level. And while, we can always brew a cup of coffee at home, the best coffee shops offer more than just a hot drink to kick start our day. Coffee shops serve as gathering spots for friends, a place to relax with a good book, or even a temporary office when we need to get a little work done. That is to say, finding the best coffee shops comes down to more than just finding a great cup of coffee, it’s also about finding a little haven in the midst of our daily chaos.
Of course, we know all about the big name coffee shops chain stores, but today, we’re going to help you find your own little coffee shop haven by looking at local coffee shops in Richmond. And trust us when we say there are plenty to choose from. To help us pick the best coffee shops in Richmond, we looked at the following factors:
The following five coffee shops are all locally owned and operated, meaning that when you stop in to fuel up with your favorite coffee drink, you’re not just treating yourself to something great, you’re supporting your local community. The fact that they all serve truly amazing coffee is just a bonus !
Take a look at our favorite coffee shops in Richmond and if you have a local favorite that didn’t make our list, let us know at cs@richmondmom.com so we can check it out for ourselves!
If wine tasting had a coffee equivalent, Lamplighter’s is where you’d find it. Since opening the first Lamplighter location on Addison Street in the Fan ten years ago, owners Zach and Noelle Archibald have established themselves as Richmond coffee connoisseurs. Thanks to carefully crafted roasts and an atmosphere that is as eclectic as it is inviting, Lamplighters on Addison has long been a local favorite hang out. Add to that an expansive menu of truly delicious soups, salads, sandwiches, and bagels, it’s an ideal spot to grab a cup to go, or sit down and stay awhile. You can even sign up for their coffee education seminars to learn a little bit more about that tasty drink you love so much. See what classes are available here. In addition to the original shop on Addison, Lamplighter’s offers two other locations – one on Summit Avenue and another at VCU on North Morris Street.
What to try: If you’re a standard brew kind of person, you can’t go wrong with a simple cup of coffee from any of Lamplighter’s locations. But if you like your coffee to have something extra, try Lamplighter’s lavendar latte for a one-of-a-kind coffee experience.

With a last name like “Brewer,” you would think that Ajay Brewer would be a shoo-in for the coffee industry. But coffee is not where he started, rather his shop was created in 2015 as a way to invest his passion into something meaningful for his hometown Richmond community. Today, Brewer’s has become a local favorite in Manchester, where they not only serve up delicious coffees brewed with sustainably-sourced beans from Red Rooster Coffee Roaster out of Floyd, Virginia, but offer a wide selection of made-to-order sandwiches, treats from local bakers, fresh-pressed juices, beer from Virginia breweries, and over 25 different whiskeys. To make this spot even sweeter, if you’re in a hurry, you can order online for a pick-up order to go. But whether you’re just stopping in or sticking around with friends, staying for live music, or participating in another great event, know that Brewer’s is the place to find a welcoming vibe, an inclusive community, and an all-around hometown feel. Also, be sure to check out their newest location inside The Market at 25th in Church Hill.
What to try: If you’re looking for something that’s simple, warm, and completely satisfying, you can’t go wrong with the classic Brewer’s Latte.
Location(s) and Hours:
This long-time Richmond favorite has turned the act of brewing coffee into a craft. Their West Main location (in the Fan) is local go-to for fantastic coffee, tea, and pastries, plus they offer a shop for fresh roasted beans, loose leaf teas, and a ton of super cute mugs and accessories. But what really sets them apart is the selection. If you’re the kind of person who likes to find a flavor of coffee that you love, then take a bag of beans home to re-create the experience, Rostov’s make it easy. Not only can you shop extensively online or join a monthly subscription club, but their friendly staff is always ready to help you in the store. And if you don’t have time to get to the shop – or simply need a pick-me-up at home or work, you can always get your Rostov’s by delivery. They only offer bike delivery to help keep their carbon footprint low, so be sure to check here to see if you’re in their delivery area. Of course, there’s always going to be something special about getting Rostov’s specialty coffee in person, so don’t miss a chance to stop by this Richmond gem – if you haven’t already! And don’t forget that “Cappy Hour” is every afternoon, Monday – Friday, from 3pm – 5pm. Stop in for half-priced brewed coffees and 50 cents off espresso-based drinks.

While we love good coffee, we also love places that serve their community at large. And when it comes to that goal, The Front Porch Cafe is a winner in every regard. The goal of The Front Porch Cafe is to create a friendly, neighborhood feel that includes everyone – kind of like sitting on a neighbor’s front porch. To that end, they also intentionally strive to keep their prices reasonable so that everyone feels welcome. But what’s even more amazing than their delicious coffee is that they are owned and operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to serve the youth of Richmond’s East End. They hire local youth as part of a Workforce Development Program that helps to equip kids job readiness skills, ensuring solid future employment. This means that at The Front Porch Cafe, not only will you enjoy artfully crafted coffee, along with smoothies, milkshakes, hot chocolate, lemonade, sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, baked good, and tons of breakfast options, you’ll know that you’re giving back to the hometown you love. And that makes a good cup of coffee even better!
What to try: There’s not much we wouldn’t recommend at The Front Porch Cafe, but you certainly can’t go wrong with a classic latte. Or if you’re more of a tea person (even though we’re talking about coffee shops), give the chai tea latte a try! It’s made with their own homemade chai.
Location and Hours:

Richmond, VA 23223

]]>The post Best (and Easiest!) Halloween Treats for Kids appeared first on Richmond Mom.
]]>Thanks to the wonderful world wide web, even the least creative of us can access other people’s creative genius. So we scoured the internet for some of the best – and easiest—ideas for Halloween treats. Now, if you follow our Best of Richmond series (and we hope you do!), you’ll know that we typically like to pick our top five in whichever category we’re covering. But today, we’re going to veer a little from the routine and offer up a few more ideas. After all, when it comes to Halloween treats that look like you put in a lot more effort than you did…well, you can never have enough!
For today’s list, we looked for Halloween treat ideas that offered the following:
Not only are these Halloween treats fun and easy-to-make, many of them can be done with your kids’ help. So take a look at our list below and get ready to impress!
Happy Halloween!
This cute ideas only requires four ingredients – and NO cooking! We found this idea thanks to Delish.com.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Mini Reese’s cups
Oreos or other chocolate sandwich cookies
Candy eyes
Peanut butter
To make the bats, simply cut your Oreos in half and remove the cream to create four half-circles. Then use dabs of peanut butter to attach them to the Reese’s cups. Add your eyes with some more peanut butter – and you’re done!
Even outdoors, the thought of s’mores is scary – all of that oozy, stickiness and melted chocolate? No thanks. But kids love s’mores and that’s while they’ll LOVE this easy, no mess s’mores dip. We found this fantastic Halloween treat thanks to The Decorated Cookie.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ghost, Pumpkin, or other Halloween-themed Peeps
Semi-sweet chocolate chips
Graham Crackers for serving
Butter
To make the dip, line a 9×9 pan with butter, add the chocolate chips, top with the Peeps, and bake at 450 degrees for about 7 minutes or until everything is melted. Serve with graham crackers…and enjoy!
Richmond Mom note: If you’re worried about the consistency of the chocolate chips, you can add a little bit of heavy cream over the chocolate chips to make the final results a bit creamier.
For a holiday devoted entirely to candy, you might as well sneak in some fruit where you can, right? And these white chocolate-covered strawberries are a great way to do it. Our thanks go out to Love From The Oven for these easy Halloween treats.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Strawberries
White chocolate chips
Some shortening (i.e, Crisco, etc)
Almond extract
Semi-Sweet chocolate chips
For this recipe, you’ll melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave, dip the strawberries, and freeze for a few minutes until the chocolate hardens. Then melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and draw ghostly faces on with a toothpick. That’s it!
Get your kids grinning with these easy, no-bake apple “teeth.” Super easy to make, apple-inspired, and fun to eat, these Halloween treats are one of our favorite Halloween finds. The recipe comes to us from the Kidspot Kitchen.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Apple slices
Peanut butter
Mini marshmallows
Slice up red apples (or green if you prefer) then coat one side of each slice with peanut butter. Add mini marshmallows along the edge of one slice to make the teeth, then top with another slice (peanut butter side down) to make a toothy grin.
Always a trusted source for kitchen crafts, Betty Crocker brings us this great Halloween treat idea – and it couldn’t be easier. With only a few ingredients and no baking, heating, or hard work involved, it’s a treat everyone will love.
What you’ll need:
Double-stuffed Oreos
M&Ms mini chocolate candies
A tube of store-bought frosting
Shoestring licorice
To make these treats, cut your licorice into even pieces and insert the pieces into the cream filling on either side of your Oreos to make legs. Then use the frosting to attach two M&M candies as eyes on top of your “spider.” And you’re done!
Richmond Mom note: If your crew is not a fan of licorice, you can always use pretzel sticks as legs.
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re really into making sure a little bit of fruit gets mixed into our Halloween treats this year. That’s why we’re loving this recipe for caramel apple nachos from Butter With a Side of Bread. In this recipe, a few ingredients and minimal work makes for a fantastic treat.
What you’ll need:
Apple slices
Marshmallows
Caramels or caramel bits
Butter
Toppings…pretzels, candies, sprinkles, etc.
This one is so easy, you’ll hardly think it’s a recipe…simply melt the marshmallows with some butter in a saucepan (think Rice Krispies treats), melt the caramels with some water in the microwave, drizzle the melted mixtures over the top of a plate of apple slice, and top with the toppings of your choice. Three words: fast, easy, and delicious!
There’s nothing like using store bought cookies to make a homemade treat…and that’s why this recipe is a winner in our books! Chelsea’s Messy Apron gives us this fantastic idea for a Halloween treat that is as easy to make as it fun to eat.
What you’ll need:
Double Chocolate Milano cookies
White chocolate chips
Vegetable oil
Black “pearl” sprinkles
To make these creepy cookie treats, melt the white chocolate and spoon it over the top 2/3 of each cookie, then allow to harden on a tray. Next, put the remaining melted white chocolate in an icing bag or plastic zipper bag with a corner cut off and create stripes over each cookie (to look like the mummy’s bandages). Lastly, make two eyes on each cookie with your black sprinkles and serve!
We all know that kids love “dirt cups” made from pudding, chocolate cookies, and gummy worms, so we know they’ll love these dirt cups with a Halloween twist. We turned to Dorothy Kern at Crazy for Crust for this recipe.
What you’ll need:
Chocolate pudding
Crushed chocolate cookies
Shortbread cookies or “fingers”
White and green candy melts (or store bought frosting)
Candy eyes
Candy pumpkins
After making your pudding and spooning it evenly into cups (and we won’t judge if you use pre-packaged pudding cups!), top with crushed chocolate cookies to make the “dirt.” Next, use the candy melts (melted, of course) or frosting to make mummies and monsters out of your shortbread and top each with a set of candy eyes. Last but not least, stick your cookie mummies and monster in the pudding cups and finish them off with a candy pumpkin. You’re done!
Halloween treats don’t always have to be sweet. So, if you’re looking for something savory to add to your Halloween menu, be sure to try these cheesy, bite-sized “eyeballs” from Woman’s Day. And while this recipe takes a little more cooking than some others, the results will still make it look like you put in a lot more effort than you did!
What you’ll need:
We’re going to end our list of Best Halloween Treats with a hug – and candy hug, that is. These delightfully easy (and delicious) treats are the perfect salty and sweet combo and come to us via Sarah’s Bake Studio.
What you’ll need:
Square or round pretzels
Hershey’s Kiss “Hugs” (or any flavor you’d like)
Caramel candy corn
Line your pretzels up on a baking tray and top each on with your Hershey’s candy. Bake at 200 degrees for a few minutes or until your Hershey’s candy has melted – but be sure to have your candy corn ready, because the last step is to press a candy corn into the center of each chocolate-pretzel treat before the chocolate hardens. Once everything cools, finish them off in the fridge so the chocolate can harden – then hand out hugs to all!
If you know of any great Halloween treats that are fantastically fun, but super easy-to-make, let us know! You can always find us at cs@richmondmom.com.

]]>Thrift shops have enjoyed a revitalization of sorts over the years. No longer simply a flea market-style place to donate or shop for oddities and trinkets, thrift shops, particularly here in Richmond, offer a place to find a surprising number of upscale treasures without breaking the bank. As an added bonus, thrift shops also provide an eco-friendly way to shop, allowing us to both recycle our unwanted or unused goods and reuse items that others no longer need. In short, thrift shops are a win-win-win situation for everyone.
Thanks to a number of thrift shops and consignment stores that have sprung up in the Richmond area over the last decade or so, there are tons of options when it comes to bargain shopping for clothes, shoes, housewares, home decor, and even furniture. To help you find some of the best thrift shops in your area, we’ve taken a look at some of our favorites and picked five that offer second hand goods worthy of a second look.
To pick our favorites, we looked for places that offered the following:
The following five spots will more than satisfy your bargain-loving side, while offering you a chance to revive and revitalize your wardrobe or home in an environmentally-friendly and economical way.

After working in the non-profit sector for a number of years, the founders of Circle Thrift and Art Space wanted to start something that would not only serve the community, but that could give back in a meaningful way. After finding a space on West Broad in 2015, Circle Thrift and Art Space was born, offering a combination thrift store and art display space to support local artists and musicians. The shop recently relocated a little further down West Broad to 400 W Broad St., at the corner of Broad and Monroe streets. The new shop is 50% larger than their previous space, allowing for an even better shopping experience. Circle Thrift and Art Space a pretty typical thrift shop in that it runs entirely on donations, so the selection is fairly eclectic, but very reasonably priced. You may have to hunt a bit for specific items, but treasures abound and local artwork is always for sale.
What they offer: Clothing/accessories, shoes, books (some are free!), home decor, housewares, sporting goods, furniture, and local art.

Most of us are familiar with Goodwill. In fact, chances are, we’ve all found a great bargain or donated things of our own to this national organization at some point, knowing that Goodwill was founded with the intent of providing job training and support services to the local community. However, Goodwill can sometimes be overwhelming with its large selections and, in some cases, uncurated offerings. Second Debut in Carytown, however, is Goodwill – with a twist. This particular Goodwill retail shop is designed to provide a more upscale experience with carefully curated goods, neatly organized displays, and a clean, bright space. With a constant influx of new items, you’ll find a constantly changing selection of clothes (including many designer brands), shoes, household goods, and more. But best of all, while Second Debut is typically priced higher than many other Goodwill locations and standard thrift shops, they offer weekly specials with items marked down through their Color Of The Week program. In other words, all items with a tag corresponding to the Color Of The Week are 50% off. In addition, they offer a Frequent Shopper Program – after four purchases of $15 or more you’ll receive a coupon for 20% off your next purchase of $20 or more.
What they offer: Clothes/accessories for all ages, shoes, books, household items, home decor, furniture, and more.

Ken and Lisa Waldrop, owners and founders of Vintage Class and Trash, operated several booths in local antique malls before realizing that they had a pretty good thing going – and thus, Vintage Class and Trash opened in Ashland in 2004. Over the last 15 years, they have expanded their funky, eclectic collection of vintage, antique, and thrift shop items to include two additional shops in Scott’s Addition and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While they don’t offer the same clothing options that our other thrift shops offer, Vintage Class and Trash is a goldmine for home decor, furniture, and more. You’ll also most likely find prices to be higher than traditional thrift shops, but reasonable given the quality and types of products, the customer service, and the overall ambiance and style of the shop. If you’re looking to refresh a space in your home on a budget, then don’t miss this crazy mix of household treasures.
What they offer: Vintage and antique items, furniture, household good, homewares, home decor, art, and more.
