Cinderella by The Richmond Ballet: A Must See Performance! http://richmondmom.com/2014/02/15/cinderella-by-the-richmond-ballet-a-must-see-performance/ http://richmondmom.com/2014/02/15/cinderella-by-the-richmond-ballet-a-must-see-performance/#comments Sat, 15 Feb 2014 15:06:52 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=55694 My friend and I made our way to the Carpenter Theatre on Valentine’s Day evening. We were excited to see Cinderella presented by The Richmond Ballet, but were not expecting the majestic performance we witnessed.

Opening night had originally been scheduled for Thursday, but due to the snow Richmond keeps getting hit with, the performance was rescheduled. This turn of events meant that we were lucky enough to see the opening night of the production, and hear a wonderful opening speech by Stoner Winslett, the founding artistic director.

The Carpenter Theatre is such a beautiful space and before the curtain opens you are surrounded by the lovely sounds of The Richmond Symphony orchestra. The ballet opens with Cinderella cleaning her room and you are immediately transported into the world of Cinderella hoping and dreaming of her prince.

The performance introduces some amazing comedic timing as Cinderella’s step sisters prepare for the royal ball. The step sisters truly were hilarious and kept you enthralled as the dancing rotated from graceful to humorously left footed. I was so impressed with not only the dancing but also with the wonderful acting shown on the stage as the dancers brought the story of Cinderella to life.

In a beautiful closing to the first act, Cinderella’s Fairy GodMother comes and transforms Cinderella into a beautiful princess, but you are left with only a glimpse of her in a stunning costume through the back of the set. The second scene opens to the ball with elaborate costumes and equally elaborate scenery. The dancing is breathtaking with a lovely bit of comedy thrown in by the court jester and step sisters.

When Cinderella dances with her Prince, it is truly magical.

The performance is done in three acts, with a twenty minute intermission between each one. This is the perfect way to show this story, as at the end of each act you are on the edge of your seat ready to see what will happen next, but it also gives you enough time to grab an extra snack, go to the bathroom, or walk around with your little one. This is the perfect engaging performance for children as young as three. With the flawless combination of beauty, magic, comedy, and entertainment, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser for all ages.

This is not your movie Cinderella. There are no talking mice or singing princesses. But there is such a majestic beauty in seeing the live performance of Cinderella and really experiencing her joys and sorrows in her journey to meet her prince. The costumes are gorgeous, and the set is stunning in each act. There are special effects that make the magic of this fairytale come to life right before your eyes.

This glorious presentation was choreographed by Malcolm Burn for Richmond Ballet. This magical production of Cinderella was inspired by the Brothers Grimm and Perrault fairy tales, and features the dramatic music of Prokofiev, performed by Richmond Symphony.

I was completely enthralled with this performance and my friend and I could not stop talking about how amazing it was. This is the perfect treat for your own little princess, and there were a lot of small children in attendance. There was also a lovely display of Cinderella themed items for sale in the lobby, the perfect souvenir for your child. (Or yourself!)

This is truly a must see ballet. The Richmond Ballet is celebrating it’s 30th season with this magical piece, and it’s a once in a lifetime performance you do not want to miss. Cinderella is the perfect ballet for seasoned ballet fans and newcomers alike..

This magical  love story is only being brought to life in Richmond this weekend, so don’t miss your chance to go! What better way to spend Valentine’s Day weekend than by seeing a real life fairy tale?

You still have four chances to see this amazing production!
