St. Mary’s Pediatric Emergency Department is Only in the Region to Have This… http://richmondmom.com/2015/03/20/st-marys-pediatric-emergency-department-is-only-in-the-region-to-have-this/ http://richmondmom.com/2015/03/20/st-marys-pediatric-emergency-department-is-only-in-the-region-to-have-this/#comments Fri, 20 Mar 2015 16:27:41 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=62020 bon secours 2

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital now has eight of the eleven specialty-trained pediatric emergency medicine physicians in the Richmond Area making the Pediatric Emergency Department the first in the region to be staffed around the clock by these physicians.

“Many patients are not aware of the importance of board certification, particularly within a specialty or subspecialty, when they are choosing a physician or hospital for their health care,” said Leigh T. Sewell, vice president of service line strategy and performance management, Bon Secours Virginia. “Physicians and nurses who are board certified have passed written, and in some cases oral exams, and they are required to keep pace with the latest advances in their specialties while also demonstrating to the medical board that they meet best practices for patient safety, communications and ethics.”

In addition to rigorous standards, board-certified emergency physicians receive an additional two to three years of training, focused specifically on pediatric emergency medicine.  Bon Secours hopes to have 100% of the Physicians who work in St. Mary’s Pediatric Emergency Department to become board-certified.

We are thrilled to have reached this goal because this advanced level of training and certification allows for a significant difference in the quality of medical care we can provide to children and their families when they arrive in our emergency department.” -William Lennarz, M.D., chief medical officer of pediatric services, Bon Secours Virginia.

As part of a $12 million campus renovation and expansion, Bon Secours expanded a completely child centered pediatric emergency department at St. Mary’s Hospital in 2013. Now Bon Secours treats more than 20,000 children each year and continues to invest in the Pediatric Emergency Department at St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s Hospital was the only emergency department in Virginia to be selected as one of 17 hospitals to be a recipient of the 2014 Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association.  The Emergency Nurses Association is a national organization which recognizes exceptional practice and innovative performance in emergency care.

In addition to having a separate pediatric emergency department, St. Mary’s for Kids offers pediatric specialists and subspecialists in cardiology, cleft and craniofacial, critical care and critical care transport, dentistry, endocrinology and diabetes, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, hospice and palliative care, hospitalists, infectious disease, neonatal-perinatal medicine, neurology, orthopaedics, pediatric development, plastic surgery, pulmonary diseases, rheumatology and urology.

Bon Secours Brings Nationally Recognized Fitness Program to Busy Moms http://richmondmom.com/2014/03/18/bon-secours-brings-nationally-recognized-fitness-program-to-busy-moms/ http://richmondmom.com/2014/03/18/bon-secours-brings-nationally-recognized-fitness-program-to-busy-moms/#comments Wed, 19 Mar 2014 01:00:24 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=56430 Forming 20 Moms In Motion® teams connecting women through fitness, social and philanthropic goals.

Many women today face challenges in balancing full-time careers, a busy home life and raising their children, with little time left for their own fitness and exercise. Bon Secours Virginia Women’s Services, recognizing that women can be better mothers when they care for themselves first, is introducing a leading women’s health fitness program to communities throughout Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Moms In Motion® is a global network of fitness teams for moms, run by moms. The program locally connects women with team-oriented fitness activities, social support with other moms sharing similar fitness goals and philanthropic opportunities. Moms come together at least once a week to exercise and train for a variety of culminating events: a 5K, 10K, half-marathon run or walk, cycling, hiking, or triathlon events. Moms In Motion® provides two separate groups: New Mamas for mom and baby (newborns to one year olds) and Fit Moms, for moms only.

The women stay connected during the week through their team’s own Moms In Motion® webpage, a mobile app and social media. At the beginning of their training, the team picks a charity to support; they may volunteer at a fundraising event to benefit families with newborns in the NICU, while another team hosts a bake sale to buy car seats for low-income families.

“Women today are well informed about their health, but MIM girlsthey often lack the time or a friend to help motivate them to exercise,” said Mary Anne Graf, vice president of women’s services, Bon Secours Virginia Health System. “We feel better after exercising; we are energized to tackle our jobs, families and other daily challenges. Moms in Motion® has a proven track record of building strong communities of women who are joining with others to achieve fitness goals. Bon Secours is proud to give moms this needed outlet to help them reach new heights in their health and fitness, while forging new friendships and having fun in the process.”

Bon Secours will host 20 teams throughout Richmond and Hampton Roads. Teams are forming now in Richmond in Midlothian, Chesterfield, the West End and in the downtown area. Women can find and register for teams in their local areas here.

Established in California in the late 1990s and quickly adopted in communities across the U.S., Moms In Motion® is based on a firm belief that women can best take care of their families by caring for themselves first.

With an annual enrollment fee of $65 for first-time members and $45 for returning members, Moms In Motion® provides women with countless benefits. Each member receives a complimentary athletic top, a $60 retail value. They benefit from a local team experience integrating weekly training plans, social get-togethers, giving back opportunities and a culminating fitness event as the team’s focal point. They can receive information on health, fitness, energy, family fitness and nutrition on the Moms In Motion® website and app. They become part of a community where members return year after year to enjoy the supportive, yet challenging, benefits Moms In Motion® presents. Teams are designed to help improve their fitness level and quality of life. There are additional program fees at the local levels for each training period. Members pay a yearly fee or opt for a monthly payment plan that covers all team training activities.  Members train and select from a variety of events to participate in throughout the year.

Moms In Motion® is among several new programs being introduced by Bon Secours in 2014.  Through qualitative and quantitative research conducted over the past 12 months, Bon Secours has found that women today are empowered to seek options and resources to support their own individuality.  Through this, Bon Secours is expanding and developing new classes and options for women, catering to those women expecting their first child, or women with families and raising young children. Visit the Bon Secours website for more information.

Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center Expands CenteringPregnancy® http://richmondmom.com/2014/03/12/bon-secours-st-francis-medical-center-expands-centeringpregnancy/ http://richmondmom.com/2014/03/12/bon-secours-st-francis-medical-center-expands-centeringpregnancy/#comments Wed, 12 Mar 2014 19:44:11 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=56280 Unique program gives women more control of their prenatal care
through group support

Women entering pregnancy can now benefit from an expanded, multifaceted group approach to prenatal care offered at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center.

CenteringPregnancy® is a nationally recognized program led by certified providers usually nurse midwives; it augments individual prenatal visits with group sessions and gives expectant women better control of their pre-natal care, through a group setting.

“Expectant women are more empowered today than 10 or 20 years ago in making their own health care decisions, and CenteringPregnancy helps them achieve this by bringing women out of isolated exam rooms and into groups for their care,” said Mary Anne Graf, vice president of women’s services, Bon Secours Virginia Health System. “CenteringPregnancy has a proven track record of ensuring healthier babies and healthier, well-informed new mothers. While moms often desire to be in the driver’s seat of their pregnancy, labor and delivery by making their own choices, they also can find pregnancy to be isolating and intimidating at times. CenteringPregnancy provides a supportive setting of women who often share the same ‘pains and passions’ of pregnancy.”

Bom Secours Heather
After completing their first obstetrics appointment at a Bon Secours-affiliated practice or clinic, women receive information on CenteringPregnancy and are offered the choice to participate in the program. Women are grouped by similar due dates. In each weekly session, they receive a private, prenatal check up by a certified nurse-midwife, including weight and blood pressure monitoring. This is followed by a two-hour group educational session led by a certified nurse-midwife. The weekly sessions enable the women to discuss health concerns and expectations in a supportive setting. Weekly topics including nutrition and healthy lifestyles, labor and childbirth options, breastfeeding, pregnancy discomforts, newborn care, child development and more.

Through this unique model of care, women become empowered and feel confident to play a more active role in their pregnancy and overall health. They have access to all their charts, ultrasounds and lab work, and they are acutely aware of how their pregnancy is progressing. Each woman is supported physically, spiritually, psychologically and socially, through bonds that develop within the group.

Initiated in the early 1990s by a nurse-midwife in Connecticut, and today with sites nationwide, the CenteringPregnancy model has resulted in positive health outcomes for pregnancies, specifically increased birth weight, fewer preterm births, shorter postpartum hospitalizations, and fewer unnecessary visits to the emergency room. The satisfaction expressed by both the women and their providers support the effectiveness of this model for the delivery of care.

“Women often are each other’s best teachers, and groups enable them to share a wealth of information with one another,” said Jean Curtacci, RN, a certified nurse-midwife and a group leader of CenteringPregnancy at St. Francis Medical Center. “The women in my groups are more willing to express what they’re really feeling, and they feed off of each other. The experience also is enhancing the way I provide prenatal care in a traditional setting, because I am learning more about what these women are going through in any given week of their pregnancy.”

“CenteringPregnancy has proven to be a really powerful process for a woman’s pregnancy, and it’s changing the way women are receiving their prenatal care,” said Graf. “New mothers especially are seeing this group approach as what prenatal care is, and will be in the future. The support setting will enrich their prenatal health, and the bonds they form will play an important role in each other’s lives. We see this as a new paradigm in the way prenatal care is delivered in the future.”

CenteringPregnancy comes to Bon Secours as a result of its 12-month qualitative and quantitative research, revealing how women today are more empowered than the previous generation of women to seek options and resources to pursue their own health needs. To support this, Bon Secours also is introducing other new programs this year, including Moms in Motion®, a nationally recognized fitness program.

redskins

November 26, 2013 The Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center is offering an exciting opportunity for fans and community supporters in conjunction with the Washington Redskins Training Camp move to Richmond. Through the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Legacy Brick Walk, fans have an exclusive opportunity to enshrine their name into Redskins territory with a personalized legacy brick. Businesses can also be distinguished as a corporate sponsor with their business name and logo carved into stone. Engraved pavers will be prominently featured in the Redskins fan zone and along the 100 yard walkway at the main entrance of the training facility on West Leigh Street in the heart of downtown Richmond.

Contributions to the Legacy Walk will help build and develop the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center and a portion of proceeds will fund youth programs and events held on site at the facility. This state-of-the-art institutional landmark will provide the Redskins with a vital competitive playing edge in NFL football.  Additionally the site will host community events and serve as a men’s health and wellness center year round.

Untitled2There are 3 ways to donate to the Legacy Walk: a 4” x 8” legacy brick, a custom 24” x 24” granite piece with your custom logo and name or a granite bench with your custom logo and name. Each commemorative item comes with an individually numbered and signed keepsake certificate of ownership inscribed with your personal engraving. To order, visit www.redskinsbricksrva.com or call 1-855-SKNS-BRX (855-756-7279) between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm EST.

Gift Certificates are available to give as gifts or to secure placement in the fan zone and the 100 yard walkway while allowing additional time to decide what to engrave on your installed legacy paver.

Keepsake replica bricks and custom display cases are available for additional purchase in the 4”x8” brick size so fans can have a special Redskins collection to display in their home or office. Replica bricks are made of the same material and engraved with the same personal message as the installed brick. They include a custom dedication plaque affixed to the top. Granite sponsors will receive a free gift of a custom-framed 12”x12” polished granite replica of their engraving for display in a home or office.

Once installation is complete, a locator map will be provided to assist donors in finding their fan bricks, granite sections and granite benches. The first installation is planned prior to the 2014 Redskins training season.
