Discover Your Identity then Boost Your Happiness at the Science Museum of Virginia! http://richmondmom.com/2013/11/05/discover-your-identity-then-boost-your-happiness-at-the-science-museum-of-virginia/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/11/05/discover-your-identity-then-boost-your-happiness-at-the-science-museum-of-virginia/#comments Tue, 05 Nov 2013 19:07:16 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=51553 fingerprintidentityWhen is the last time you really looked at your ears, rolled your tongue in the mirror and studied your finger tips?  Identity: An Exhibition of You is the latest temporary exhibit at the Science Museum of Virginia and it’s all about me. Well, to me it was, but when you go it will be all about you.

So, what are the things that make you who you are?
When you start through the exhibit, you first learn about your physical traits and how genetics shapes them, as you move through the exhibit, you’ll discover more about your inner self in some pretty amazing ways!  What can your nose tell you about whether or not you like new experiences? How does your reaction to a picture of flowers reflect how outgoing you are?  Do you think male or female?  One I found particularly fascinating, what gender biases do you have?
Identity stands alone as a great exhibit, but it’s also a perfect paring with SMV’s new permanent exhibit Boost!

If the Science Museum had nothing else in it, the ability to visit Boost! any day you want is worth the price of a membership.  The exhibit is beautiful, with plenty of space to move around and explore, which is great because with Boost! you are guaranteed to move!

Identity3

First, relax and exercise your mind and body with a little bit of yoga, test your reflexes and your strength and learn to tightrope walk.  Then, head to the kitchen stadium to give your health a boost.  A full sized kitchen stands in the middle of the exhibit, where you can sample snacks like popcorn (drizzled with chocolate), kale chips to meals like butternut squash soup.  If you discover something you love,  grab a recipe for healthy food at home.

After your snack, compose music using animatronic instruments, build your memory and discover what makes you happy.  Come back again and again with your QR chip or the Boost! app (leave it to the SMV to take full advantage of technology) and see your progress over time.

If you’re looking for a great way to wear the kids out while they get their learn on AND have fun yourself while doing it, make your way to the Science Museum of Virginia. You won’t regret it.

Identity: An Exhibition of You
is open now until January 4, 2014.
Free with price of admission.

Boost! Your Body, Mind & Happiness! At Science Museum of Virginia http://richmondmom.com/2013/06/21/boost-your-body-mind-happiness-at-science-museum-of-virginia/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/06/21/boost-your-body-mind-happiness-at-science-museum-of-virginia/#comments Fri, 21 Jun 2013 15:26:37 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=45307 Boost!

Boost!  is the Science Museum of Virginia‘s first new permanent exhibit in a decade.  It’s Amazing and it opens this weekend!  If  you’re looking to Boost! your creativity, flexibility, memory, strength…(well, you get the picture) this is the place to be.

By using cutting-edge technology, Boost! allows visitors to personalize their experience, track performance and playfully compete with friends and family.

From watching popcorn on the cob being made in the incredible full scale Kitchen Stadium to laying down your own percussion tracks on “More Cowbell” , SMV’s new exhibit will tantalize and mesmerize while challenging your perceptions of wellness, self-improvement and your interactions with the world around you.

Boost Mix

When you first enter the exhibit, you receive a chip with a QR code, which you can use to track your results throughout the interactive exhibit.  The chip is yours to keep, so you can take it back to the Science Museum and track your progress over time.  Challenge yourself (or your whole family) to become more flexible, develop better balancing skills or improve memory.

Brian and I were lucky enough to get a sneak peak at Boost! and this is some of what we learned:

  1. With a bit of practice, we could both learn to walk a tight rope!
  2. Brian could squeeze me into a travel golf bag if he ever needed to (which I sure hope he doesn’t).
  3. Brian can bench press WAY more than me, big surprise, but I can jump higher than him relative to our respective heights.
  4. The interactive yoga exhibit is REALLY popular…we didn’t get a chance to test it out this time, but I’m really excited to go back and play around with that one!!
  5. We both need more sleep and LOTS more play time.

Boost mix2Boost! opens Saturday, June 22nd, and if you can pry yourself away from the exhibit, don’t forget to enjoy everything from Robots to live performances at the Spring N2 Summer celebration’s special outdoor activities and live science demonstrations.  Included with general admission and free for members!
