Free Seminar: High-Risk Pregnancy: Know What to Expect 10/24/12 http://richmondmom.com/2012/10/16/free-seminar-high-risk-pregnancy-know-what-to-expect-102412/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/10/16/free-seminar-high-risk-pregnancy-know-what-to-expect-102412/#comments Tue, 16 Oct 2012 15:41:17 +0000 Kate Hall http://richmondmom.com/?p=34022 A high-risk or difficult pregnancy might pose challenges before, during or after delivery. We’ve seen the discussions in our Richmondmom.com Junkies Facebook group and understand the challenges this brings for expectant families.

If you are at risk, you and your baby might need special monitoring or care throughout your pregnancy. VCU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) will host a panel of experts in neonatal and maternal-fetal medicine as they discuss the causes of high-risk pregnancies, and what you can do to take care of yourself and your baby.

Details:

  • Drs. Karen Hendricks-Muñoz, Elena Kwon and Ronald Ramus
  • Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave.
  • Free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. For more information, visit VCUHealth.org. To register, call 828-0123.

About the Presenters

Dr. Karen Hendricks-Muñoz, professor and chief of the Division of Neonatal Medicine, serves as director of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Board certified in pediatrics and neonatal medicine, Hendricks-Muñoz specializes in neonatal intensive care, pulmonary disease and neurodevelopmental outcomes. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Developmental Pediatricians and the Eastern Society of Pediatric Research.

Dr. Elena Kwon, a board certified pediatric cardiologist with advanced imaging fellowship training, specializes in fetal cardiology, echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Kwon leads Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s Fetal Cardiology Program.

The program works closely with cardiologists and surgeons, as well as obstetricians and maternal-fetal specialists, to help provide the best possible outcomes for newborns with cardiac defects.

Dr. Ronald Ramus, chief of maternal-fetal medicine at VCU, brings expertise in many prenatal diagnostic techniques, including chorionic villous sampling.

Chorionic villous sampling is a way to diagnose chromosomal or genetic disorders in the first trimester, earlier than amniocentesis screening can be done.

Help Nannies + Tutors Fight Childhood Cancer with a Refreshing LemonAid on Friday http://richmondmom.com/2012/06/19/help-nannies-tutors-fight-childhood-cancer-with-a-refreshing-lemonaid-on-friday/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/06/19/help-nannies-tutors-fight-childhood-cancer-with-a-refreshing-lemonaid-on-friday/#comments Tue, 19 Jun 2012 21:17:55 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=30229 Looking for something sweet to do this weekend? Here it is!

Come Support a deliciously sweet LemonAid Stand Friday. College Nannies and Tutors is excited to host the Anthem LemonAid Stand for the 3rd year in a row. Please stop by their Learning Center tomorrow, Friday 7/20, between 11 am and 4 pm for a refreshing cup of lemonade.

Suggested donation is $1 and all proceeds benefit the Children’s Hospital of Richmond.  This is a great opportunity to help “put the squeeze” on childhood cancer in Virginia!

We hope to see you there!

Host a Lemonade Stand and Fight Childhood Cancer http://richmondmom.com/2012/06/01/help-anthem-lemonaid-fight-childhood-cancer/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/06/01/help-anthem-lemonaid-fight-childhood-cancer/#comments Fri, 01 Jun 2012 16:26:40 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=27776 Nothing exudes the taste of summer quite like a cold glass of lemonade. What could be better? How about knowing that refreshing beverage is helping to fight childhood cancer in Central Virginia?

Anthem LemonAid is taking place this summer from Friday, July 20th – Sunday, July 22nd. Every participant will receive a FREE LemonAid kit and 100% of the proceeds benefit the oncology and hematology clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

 Why participate in Anthem LemonAid?

Says local mom Yvonne, “I don’t know anyone personally that has had a battle with childhood cancer [but want my] daughter to learn to give back to others. She is only 6 years old, and has no idea there are children her age with [a] sickness like cancer. I want her to learn compassion and the value [of] helping others in need.”

The program is a great first lesson in philanthropy and teaches your child the importance of giving back to others. Cups of LemonAid may sell for a $1 but over the past ten years, those $1 cups have turned into $726,000!

Of course, let’s not forget that the program is FUN!!!

Your kids can set up stands in your neighborhood, at your church or at the community pool. If you’d like to see more foot traffic, register to host a stand outside the storefront of one of our retail partners: Walmart, Sam’s Club, Panera Bread or Kroger. Want to do a creative project in the kitchen with your kids?

Create your own lemonade recipe and show it off at the 17th Street Farmer’s Market!

Visit AnthemLemonAid.com and sign-up today! Together we can make a difference and put the squeeze on childhood cancer in our community.

Families Dealing with Children’s Cancer Need Your Help http://richmondmom.com/2012/03/26/families-dealing-with-childrens-cancer-need-your-help/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/03/26/families-dealing-with-childrens-cancer-need-your-help/#comments Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:51:05 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=23520 Do you or someone you know have a child dealing with the challenges of cancer? Dealing with childhood cancer takes a toll on parents and caregivers, and the day-to-day activities of life take a back seat. But now there is a new organization in the Richmond area that offers help and hope.

The Fairy Godmother Project started in Fredericksburg and is now moving to Richmond. This program helps families in Virginia who have a child in treatment for cancer. As you can imagine, they are under a great deal of stress both financially and emotionally because of their child’s illness so the regular day-to-day stresses like cooking, cleaning, lawn care, shopping, and organizing are low on the priority list.

As a group, the Fairy Godmother Project tries to lighten their load. They have volunteers who make meals, donate their time to clean, provide different services and donate money to help these families.  The second part of the program provides one professional photography session to each family.  This is the most precious gift to many of them because they just don’t know what the future holds and photos are a long-lasting treasure.

The Fairy Godmother Project in Richmond needs volunteers, sponsors, services donated by businesses, monetary and gift card donations, and other things to ease the burden for those dealing with childhood cancer.

As for volunteer needs, they need people who will make meals, clean and organize homes, fundraise to be able to provide these services, and market to the community.  They need businesses to donate house-cleanings and lawn services, restaurants to donate meals and date nights for families, and other services to lighten the load of parents and caregivers.

People may have other talents to share with FGP families (massages, haircutting services, tutoring, dog-sitting, painting, and others).

Source: Fairy Godmother website

Don’t have time to volunteer? They also need gift card donations for gas or restaurants, and groceries are always needed. Monetary donations are also welcome and checks can be written to Fairy Godmother Project.  FGP is run completely by volunteers, so all donations go directly towards helping these families.

No matter how much or little time you have or what your interest/talent is, they can find a place for you at FGP and your efforts will ease the burdens of families dealing with the more critical and time-sensitive issues of childhood cancer. Help make their burdens lighter by volunteering or donating.

Donations can be made online or mailed to:
Fairy Godmother Project
c/o Laura Leporati
4831 Jaydee Dr.
Moseley, VA 23120

There is a volunteer training scheduled for this Tuesday, March 27th at 7 pm at Clover Hill library. They would love to have you attend and your help offers help and hope for others.

For more information, visit the Fairy Godmother website.

George Canyon to Attend Richmond Diabetes Educational Event http://richmondmom.com/2012/03/19/george-canyon-performs-live-in-richmond-on-march-24/ http://richmondmom.com/2012/03/19/george-canyon-performs-live-in-richmond-on-march-24/#comments Mon, 19 Mar 2012 20:56:20 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=22964 Maybe you’ve heard about George Canyon who placed #2 on “Nashville Star” and then became a country music sensation. If  you have a child with diabetes, you can see him in person right here in Richmond.

Country music star George Canyon will be in Richmond on Saturday, March 24. He is attending an educational event for children living with Type 1 diabetes (and their families) at Mount Vernon Baptist Church on Nuckols Road in Glen Allen, VA.

George has come a long way since he placed #2 on the popular TV show “Nashville Star”. He has had numerous chart-topping songs and received many top awards for his music. The award he’s most proud of is a humanitarian award from the Canadian Country Music Awards for his support of the Canadian troops and his work to aid the search for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

George has been living with Type 1 diabetes since the age of 14 and has been a tremendous advocate empowering children and adults by showing that this disease doesn’t have to get in the way of pursuing what you love.

The “CareGiver” program is a retreat for children and their families living with type 1 diabetes and is being presented by The Children’s Hospital of Richmond and Animas Corporation Kids with diabetes and their parents are invited to attend this educational event. The day will include fun events for the kids, valuable information for parents, and of course a brief George Canyon performance. It’s a great time to learn more about dealing with the challenges of diabetes and helping children learn more about taking care of their own health.

Check out George’s Youtube videos below to hear him sing, and also learn more about his mission to help others dealing with the challenge of diabetes.

Congratulations Children's Hospital of Richmond!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond’s Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, that has received certification again from the American Diabetes Association for its Diabetes Education Program!

VCU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital worked together to establish the Children’s Hospital of Richmond.  They are a full-service children’s hospital that offers a robust continuum of pediatric services, research and education.
“Like” them on Facebook and keep up with what’s happening as they offer state-of-the-art services focused on pediatrics, acute care, neonatal care, transitional care, audiology, assistive technology, and physical, occupational and speech therapy — among other valuable services.
Hopefully you will never need their services, but if you do, it’s nice to know that they are there and focused on providing optimal care for Richmond’s children.

Is There a Cure for Children with Diabetes? http://richmondmom.com/2011/03/19/is-there-a-cure-for-children-with-diabetes/ http://richmondmom.com/2011/03/19/is-there-a-cure-for-children-with-diabetes/#comments Sat, 19 Mar 2011 13:59:44 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=5030

Lewis Ginter hosts VCU seminar on children and diabetes.

Children with diabetes face many more challenges than other children when it comes to daily living. Nutrition, medication and activity are often impacted when diabetes is involved.

The Children’s Hospital of Richmond is presenting a seminar series featuring physicians who talk about current topics in health. On Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is hosting a VCU seminar entitled, “Is There a Cure for Children with Diabetes?”.

Dr. Gary Francis, CHoR’s Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, discusses diabetes management options and innovative approaches designed to prevent or reverse diabetes in children.

The seminar is FREE, however, reservations are required. Light refreshments are provided and you can register by calling 804.828.0123.

Take advantage of this opportunity to help children live healthier lives today and in the future. The VCU Medical Center is just one more way to learn about healthy living.
