The latest group attacks on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University have got my mind spinning. These were unprovoked attacks on unsuspecting individuals. These individuals were minding their own business when a group of nearly 15 (maybe more) young adults and teens descended up on them. The individuals were punched and one had property removed from his person after being punched to the ground.

stop-violence-300x300Three individuals connected to these attacks have now been arrested (see the article in the Richmond Times Dispatch). It seems two of the three are related and they are adults. The third is a teen and his name has not been released. While I am thankful that arrests have been made, it leaves me wondering, “Why?”

I do not understand violence. I do not understand how one can just walk up to a person and for no reason punch them. It makes no sense to me. Who does this kind of thing and what is happening in their head that makes them think this is acceptable behavior? It makes me think back to the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Is that still taught?

This weekend, someone set fire to the playground at Woodville Elementary School in the City of Richmond’s east end. The brand new playground melted in a matter of moments. School started two days later. The children, who were excited about the new playground that awaited them, now have no school playground. Again, I am wondering, “Who does this? Why would someone do this?”

I do not have the answers to my questions. I wish I did, because then maybe I could move forward in an effort to thwart this kind of behavior. What I do know is that as a mother, it makes me want to try even harder to teach my children about respect. I hope that my children will never choose violence or destruction as a cure for boredom. I hope that my children will stop and think about the risks and consequences for their behaviors prior to committing to a behavior. I hope that my children will choose to be respectful of others and their property. Most of all, I hope that I am an example to my children of how we should treat others, and that rules are made to protect us and others and that we should do our best to follow the rules, even when others around us are choosing not to follow those rules.

I know many of us try and shelter our children from the harsh realities of this world, but occasionally we should take these situations and make them into teachable moments for our children. Turn these bad incidents into good life lessons for teaching our children about respect, how to treat others and that all choices in life result in a consequence of some kind. Our children deserve for us to teach them respect. It all begins at home.

Mother Runners and VCU race for success on April 2, 2011!

What’s so great about April 2, 2011 in Richmond, Virginia?

Well…….plenty!

Mother Runners and Monument 10k

April 2 is the famous Monument 10K race where the Richmondmoms and Mother Runners will lace up their running shoes and soar down beautiful Monument Avenue.  The race kicks off with the kids fun run at 8:00 a.m. and the 10K starts at 8:30 a.m. Many of our moms and grandmoms have trained and worked hard to prepare for this race.

They’ve run in freezing cold, rain, ice, snow and blistering winds through the previous months as they prepared to leave their mark on history.

Congratulations to all of our Mother Runners and Monument 10k participants as they begin their run and reach the finish line.

This year’s race will be a monumental event as it coincides with VCU’s appearance in the Final Four!

Cheering VCU to Victory

What a tremendous victory for VCU and an honor for Richmond to be home to such a successful basketball team with incredible players and inspiring coaching staff. VCU has scheduled game viewing sites for students on Saturday night that include:

  • The Siegel Center will host a viewing party for VCU and VCU Health System students, faculty and staff with a valid ID. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Limited to 3,500 attendees.
  • Rodney’s on the first floor of Shafer Court Dining Center will hold a watch party for students only. For two dining plan blocks, students will enjoy a game-day buffet, complete with spirited giveaways and prizes. Tickets are on sale at Market 810-2-Go. Admission is limited to the first 220 guests. Four spirit bags will be raffled off in honor of the Final Four games. Additional watch parties will be held for students in resident halls and the Common Ground at the University Student Commons.
  • Chili’s @ VCU also is hosting a watch party. Game day specials, including selected half-price appetizers and $5 burgers, will be available for guests wearing their VCU Gear.

Capital Ale House, many other local restaurants, and local establishments will host game-watching parties on Saturday, as VCU takes on Butler at 6:00 p.m.

Go Richmond!

Support our Mother Runners and all of the great Monument 10K participants, and then enjoy the VCU game and cheer them on to victory too.

Richmond is a great place to live — and especially this coming weekend!

Is There a Cure for Children with Diabetes? http://richmondmom.com/2011/03/19/is-there-a-cure-for-children-with-diabetes/ http://richmondmom.com/2011/03/19/is-there-a-cure-for-children-with-diabetes/#comments Sat, 19 Mar 2011 13:59:44 +0000 RhondaDay http://richmondmom.com/?p=5030

Lewis Ginter hosts VCU seminar on children and diabetes.

Children with diabetes face many more challenges than other children when it comes to daily living. Nutrition, medication and activity are often impacted when diabetes is involved.

The Children’s Hospital of Richmond is presenting a seminar series featuring physicians who talk about current topics in health. On Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is hosting a VCU seminar entitled, “Is There a Cure for Children with Diabetes?”.

Dr. Gary Francis, CHoR’s Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, discusses diabetes management options and innovative approaches designed to prevent or reverse diabetes in children.

The seminar is FREE, however, reservations are required. Light refreshments are provided and you can register by calling 804.828.0123.

Take advantage of this opportunity to help children live healthier lives today and in the future. The VCU Medical Center is just one more way to learn about healthy living.
