There are few people who aren’t familiar with the beautiful and bittersweet story of Charlotte’s Web. Virginia Rep brings the cherished novel to life with exactly the right mix of love, nostalgia and honesty that makes you want to pick up the book and read it again.
(from left to right) Isabella Cipollina (Narrator), Laney Yoo (Narrator), Lucas Hall (Lurvy), Adalaide O’Connor (Narrator). Photo by Jay Paul
The story is narrated by Isabella Cipollina, Adalaide O’Connor, and, alternating nights, Evelyn Drumeer and Laney Yoo who balance their whistful story telling with presence and charm. In addition to supporting the story through narration, the young women sing time-honored songs such as You Are My Sunshine and Keep on the Sunny Side, beautifully anchored by the voice and music from Lucas Hall on the guitar.
The characters of the story itself also shine. Audra Honaker’s Charlotte is absolutely enchanting as she gracefully navigates her large web. Over the course of 90 minutes, Honaker has a seamless transition from energetic and friendly with an almost stone cold honestly to a tired, wise and loveable heroine. Samuel Elton plays the endearing and radiant pig, capturing the heart of Fern, Charlotte and the audience as well. Ellie Wilson is a strong Fern and a delight to watch.
Other notable performances include Jessi Johnson and Paul Major as the uppity Goose and the Gander (respectively). Lucas Hall as the loveable Lurvy, Donathan Arnold as Avery, the hilarious and adorable Lamb played by Hanna Piper and Evan Nasteff as a sly Templeton.

Costumes by Sarah Grady were subtle and lovely with special attention to fabrics and textures to enhance each animal’s unique personality and traits; wool sweaters for the rigid sheep, coats for the proper goose and gander, leather and jeans for the rebel rat and soft overalls and converse sneakers for the childlike pig.
Both my 8 year old son and I enjoyed the show immensely, and both of us were quite tearful at the end. Please note that this production deals with the same themes in regards to life and death in the same direct and honest manner as the book which may need to be considered when bringing sensitive children.
Charlotte’s Web is an excellent production for those who loved the book and a wonderful introduction for those who have yet to experience it.

We just love a good show at Virginia Repertory Theatre – and holiday shows are some of the finest! It’s time to plan your calendar now for the holidays and get your tickets for these spectacular shows and events.
Virginia Repertory Theatre opens Twas the Night Before Christmas on Friday, November 29 at the Children’s Theatre of Virginia at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. The show will run through December 29, 2013 with added weekday matinees during the holiday season. The original book, music, and lyrics are by Bruce Craig Miler, Artistic Director of Virginia Repertory Theatre, and are based on the true story of how Clement C. Moore came to write his immortal poem, Twas the Night Before Christmas. The show lasts about one hour and is best enjoyed by children three years and older.
Director Jan Guarino considers the show to be a special holiday treat. “Twas the Night Before Christmas is a sparkling jewel of a show for young and old! It tells the story of the making of that infamous poem and is sure to warm your hearts and put you into the holiday spirit. Beautiful sets and costumes, wonderful singing and perhaps even a visit from Santa! Just what you need to get your holidays started!!”
Guarino most recently directed and was seen on stage in Richard Scarry’s Busytown. Other directing credits for Virginia Rep include They’re Playing Our Song, Where’s Charley?, Barefoot in the Park and The Wizard of Oz. Recent acting credits at Virginia Rep include Lyle, Lyle Crocodile and God of Carnage.
P.J. Freebourn returns to the Children’s Theatre of Virginia in the role of Clement C. Moore. Freebourn was a favorite this past summer as Lowly Worm in Busytown. Audrey Snyder returns to Virginia Rep after a five-year hiatus as Clement’s wife, Eliza Moore, and Jessi Johnson joins the cast as Diana Mouse. Rounding out the company are 5th graders Sophia Bunnell and Audrey Kate Taylor alternating as daughter Charity Moore and Laney Yoo and Adelaide O’Connor splitting the role of daughter Margaret.

]]>Virginia Repertory Theatre and Prevent Child Abuse Virginia Celebrate
30 Years of Hugs and Kisses
Virginia’s Principal Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program
Richmond, VA – Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the 30th anniversary celebration of the nationally acclaimed child sexual abuse prevention program Hugs and Kisses. The free anniversary performance will take place Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street. This award- winning landmark musical play sensitively tells the story of a little girl who has been sexually abused. During the course of the play, the girl and her friends learn valuable life lessons that enable her to talk to a trusted adult who can bring help. Juan Conde from Channel 8 News will EMCEE the event. A question and answer session and reception will follow immediately after the program.
Hugs and Kisses is a unique partnership between Prevent Child Abuse Virginia (PCAV), the Virginia Department of Social Services and Virginia Rep. Now in its 30th year of touring, Hugs and Kisses introduces the concepts of good touch, bad touch and secret touch to elementary school students in a sensitive and an age appropriate manner through an enjoyable musical play. Both Johanna Schuchert, Executive Director of PCAV, and Ann Childress, CPS Prevention Supervisor from Social Services, agree that collaboration has been the key to keeping this program going since 1983. “All three organizations and other valuable partners have worked together at the state level. Schools, local social services and other community groups such as women’s clubs have supported the effort locally. We are all appreciative of the difference this program has made for children in Virginia.”
The project began with a 1981 conversation between Bruce Miller, then Artistic Director of Theatre IV, and Ann Childress from the Virginia Department of Social Services. Childress persuaded Miller that an educational program about child sexual abuse was needed for school age children. After 18 months of research, Miller along with playwright Terry Bliss and composer, Richard Giersch, had created the child abuse prevention play. Miller remembers that in the early years, Hugs and Kisses was not an easy sell. “In 1983, no school in Virginia would even accept a free performance so we provided seven showcase performances across the state. During that time period, a major case of child abuse broke at a childcare facility in California and child sexual abuse was featured on the cover of Time and Newsweek. Within days, the show was fully booked and has been ever since.”
Hugs and Kisses has been shown in every school district in Virginia and has been seen by approximately 1.5 million children. An independent evaluation is conducted annually. The evaluation consistently supports that children learn the prevention message across all elementary school grade levels. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many children have sought and received the help they need to end existing sexual victimization as a result of Hugs and Kisses and related dialogue.
Funding from the Virginia Department of Social Services, Virginia Commission for the Arts, and foundations and corporations allows Virginia Rep to take Hugs and Kisses to over 150 schools annually for a subsidized price of $150 – $350. In many cases, the play is performed at no cost to the school.
Hugs and Kisses has been recognized nationally as an important prevention tool. The United States Department of Health and Human Services awarded Bruce Miller the Commissioner’s Award to honor his “outstanding contribution to the field of child abuse and neglect.” The program itself has received the Governor’s Award for service to the Commonwealth and the Award for Excellence in Prevention from the Virginia Council in Coordinating Prevention. In addition, Hugs and Kisses was performed before the U. S. Senate Sub-Committee on the Sexual Victimization of Children and was the keynote address at the national conference of the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse.
For more information about the event or the Hugs and Kisses contact Ronnie Brown at rbrown@va-rep.org or 783-1688 ext 1130.
