Treasure Island opens at Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre on Friday, March 13, 2015.
This treasured classic written by Robert Louis Stevenson has been adapted for the stage with book, music and lyrics by Paul Deiss and is Directed by John Moon. Making his Children’s Theatre debut, Landon Nagel plays the role of Billy Bones and Silver. Nagel was most recently seen as Vernon in They’re Playing Our Song at Hanover Tavern. Alexander Sapp returns to Virginia Rep in the role of Jim Hawkins. Recent Virginia Rep roles include Patrick in the hit musical, Mame, and Dami in Tartuffe. Returning to the Children’s Theatre stage and rounding out the company are Jahred King, Paul S. Major, Evan Nasteff, Charley Raintree, and Hannah Zold.

The School of Performing Arts in the Richmond community – SPARC – has provided incredible performing arts experience to students in the Richmond area for over 30 years. SPARC has full-day and half-day camps for students ages 4 to 18. Our summer camps are filled with singing, acting, dancing, friends and fun! With camps from June to August, every student can find a camp to make them shine. Swift Creek Mill Theatre Camp
Since 1994, Children’s Theatre Summer Camps at the Mill have offered fantastic beginner and performance-level camps that focus on voice, acting, movement and stage design, and are conducted by professionals in the performing arts. Designed for kids in grades one through five, Math Edge helps nurture students’ natural math ability and builds on core math concepts in a fun, kid-friendly learning environment alongside other kids with
similar interests. Well-trained teachers manage the small sessions of 12 students or less and offer encouragement, motivation and rewards in an effort to foster independent learning and encourage students to set personal goals. This compelling drama is a tribute to the great American woman from Richmond, Virginia who helped establish and organize the first civil rights strike by black students and became the nation’s first woman bank president. Starting her work at the order of St. Luke, a national savings group formed to pay the burial expensive of poor blacks,Maggie Walker became a powerful force in civil rights. Through this production, students will form a deeper understanding of Maggie Walker and the times in which she lived.

Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn is offering a FREE class on Monday, October 20th, 2014.
This six week series allows preschoolers to experience books in a whole new way. Each Monday kids will take a multi-sensory journey through a favorite work of children’s literature using age appropriate process-based creative drama. The one hour program is designed for children 3 1/2 – 5 years old and is an ideal introduction to the magical world of Theatre.
The next 6 week session begins November 17th.

There are few people who aren’t familiar with the beautiful and bittersweet story of Charlotte’s Web. Virginia Rep brings the cherished novel to life with exactly the right mix of love, nostalgia and honesty that makes you want to pick up the book and read it again.

The story is narrated by Isabella Cipollina, Adalaide O’Connor, and, alternating nights, Evelyn Drumeer and Laney Yoo who balance their whistful story telling with presence and charm. In addition to supporting the story through narration, the young women sing time-honored songs such as You Are My Sunshine and Keep on the Sunny Side, beautifully anchored by the voice and music from Lucas Hall on the guitar.
The characters of the story itself also shine. Audra Honaker’s Charlotte is absolutely enchanting as she gracefully navigates her large web. Over the course of 90 minutes, Honaker has a seamless transition from energetic and friendly with an almost stone cold honestly to a tired, wise and loveable heroine. Samuel Elton plays the endearing and radiant pig, capturing the heart of Fern, Charlotte and the audience as well. Ellie Wilson is a strong Fern and a delight to watch.
Other notable performances include Jessi Johnson and Paul Major as the uppity Goose and the Gander (respectively). Lucas Hall as the loveable Lurvy, Donathan Arnold as Avery, the hilarious and adorable Lamb played by Hanna Piper and Evan Nasteff as a sly Templeton.

Costumes by Sarah Grady were subtle and lovely with special attention to fabrics and textures to enhance each animal’s unique personality and traits; wool sweaters for the rigid sheep, coats for the proper goose and gander, leather and jeans for the rebel rat and soft overalls and converse sneakers for the childlike pig.
Both my 8 year old son and I enjoyed the show immensely, and both of us were quite tearful at the end. Please note that this production deals with the same themes in regards to life and death in the same direct and honest manner as the book which may need to be considered when bringing sensitive children.
Charlotte’s Web is an excellent production for those who loved the book and a wonderful introduction for those who have yet to experience it.
