Treasure Island opens at Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre on Friday, March 13, 2015.
This treasured classic written by Robert Louis Stevenson has been adapted for the stage with book, music and lyrics by Paul Deiss and is Directed by John Moon. Making his Children’s Theatre debut, Landon Nagel plays the role of Billy Bones and Silver. Nagel was most recently seen as Vernon in They’re Playing Our Song at Hanover Tavern. Alexander Sapp returns to Virginia Rep in the role of Jim Hawkins. Recent Virginia Rep roles include Patrick in the hit musical, Mame, and Dami in Tartuffe. Returning to the Children’s Theatre stage and rounding out the company are Jahred King, Paul S. Major, Evan Nasteff, Charley Raintree, and Hannah Zold.

Treasure Island will take viewers on an unforgettable pirate voyage into the tropical seas as they follow their favorite swashbucklers through treachery and turmoil. Campers will spend their days learning the ways of ogres and royalty getting to know all the fairytale characters along the way. Each day will be filled with creative drama, movement and music in addition to a mix of theatre related arts and crafts. The campers will get to see the professional production of Shrek. On the last day they will perform selections from the show for friends and family on that very same stage!

Great parks like Deep Run Park, Dorey Park, and Three Lakes where there are nature trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and lots more. Crump Park/Meadow Farm Museum has an historic house open for tours at various times throughout the week, and they have animals for the kids to enjoy – they offer lots of outdoor fun with plenty of room to run and play.
Henrico County Parks and Recreation (FREE)
Special summer events including puppet shows, magicians, musicians and theatre troupes are offered at facilities and parks throughout the county, see site for details. And don’t miss the free Open Gym for ages 10 and up. All skill levels are invited to play pickleball—a fun blend of tennis, table tennis, and badminton! Henricus Historical Park in Chesterfield County (FREE)
Fun events for all ages.The recreated 1611 Citie of Henricus, an outdoor living history museum with 12 recreated colonial structures, demonstrates history through “hands-on” encounters with period dressed historical interpreters. Visitors interact with interpreters during which time visitors may be asked to assist with cooking, blacksmithing, planting or harvesting. Visitors may even be asked to join the Militia! Be ready for an exciting and provocative experience in living history! Events all summer.

Jamestown Settlement
This museum of 17th century Virginia history explores America’s first permanent English colony. See the replicas of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607. National Battlefield Park (FREE)
Richmond was the scene of a number of battles during the Civil War, and National Battlefield Park encompasses 13 separate sites with four visitor centers along an 80 mile route through the City of Richmond, and Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield counties. Park admission is free. Visitor centers at Tredegar Iron Works (fee), Chimborazo and Cold Harbor are open daily. Visitor centers at Glendale and Fort Harrison are open daily June through August.
Old Time Music Jams at Rockwood Park (FREE)
Bring a chair and don’t hesitate to tap your feet at this monthly informal gathering of musicians playing old timey instruments on the porch at the nature center. Arts Education Workshops to Richmond Public Schools Teachers
Kennedy Center teaching artist Dr. Karl Schaffer will present two workshops
exploring the relationship between dance and mathematics on February 25 and 26
RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond-based partners of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Program will present two teacher workshops with Master Teaching Artist Dr. Karl Schaffer on February 25 and 26, 2013. The region’s partners are Virginia Repertory Theatre (formerly Theatre IV), Richmond CenterStage, and Richmond Public Schools’ Arts and Humanities Center, and these innovative workshops will focus on using physical movement and dance to explore and understand mathematical concepts.
Dr. Schaffer comes to Richmond from Cupertino, California, where he teaches math at DeAnza College. During the last fourteen years he has worked with dance teacher Erik Stern to develop performances, classroom activities and teacher workshops linking dance and math. Their work demonstrates that mathematical ideas become more exciting, tangible and memorable when acted out with the whole body. The interdisciplinary approach to learning demonstrated in these workshops is the cornerstone of the Kennedy Center education partnerships. “Research has long shown the effectiveness of using the arts to teach concepts in other core subjects such as math, and given the state’s recent revised math standards and testing, the partners thought this to be an extremely valuable professional development opportunity for teachers in Richmond Public Schools,” said Janet Krogman, Director of Education for CenterStage. “Through this partnership with one of the nation’s leading performing arts center, we have the unique ability to introduce new, exciting, and engaging ways for teachers to enhance their curricula.”
“Dr. Schaffer is the nation’s foremost practitioner in using movement to teach math,” said Bruce Miller, Artistic Director of the Virginia Repertory Theatre. “As we’ve learned that different students learn in different ways, we’re excited to explore using the arts to teach math SOLs to kinesthetic learners.”
Since 1997, Virginia Repertory Theatre and Richmond Public Schools have been a part of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Partners in Education Network, a program designed to assist arts organizations throughout the nation to develop or expand educational partnerships with their local school systems. ]]>Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre of Virginia opens Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. The show will run through April 5, 2013 with added matinees to accommodate the public school spring break schedule. Based on the beloved children’s books, The House on East 88th Street and Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber, the musical shares the magical adventures of Josh Primm and his misfit (but very special) reptilian pet – Lyle! The original music and lyrics are by Bruce Craig Miler, Artistic Director of Virginia Repertory Theatre.

Under the direction of Chase Kniffen, this funny musical features old favorites and new faces: Jan Guarino, Mark Persinger, Durron Tyre, Paul Major, Christie Jackson, and Kyle Cornell. Chase is the Associate Artistic Director for Virginia Rep and won the 2010, 2011, and 2012 RTCC Award for Best Director of a Musical for his work on The Sound of Music, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Spring Awakening. Most recently he directed Madeline’s Christmas.
The show lasts about one hour and is best enjoyed by children 3 years and older with plenty of humor to entertain older kids and adults.
