Beacon Tree Foundation Supports Depressed, Troubled Youth: Will You Help January 9? http://richmondmom.com/2013/01/01/beacon-tree-foundation-supports-depressed-troubled-youth-will-you-help-january-9/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/01/01/beacon-tree-foundation-supports-depressed-troubled-youth-will-you-help-january-9/#comments Tue, 01 Jan 2013 20:29:32 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=36973 Beacon Tree Logo Final Horizontal 11 19 12I will have to admit that when we finalized plans for Beacon Tree Foundation as our sponsored event for Wine Down on January 9, 2013, I was not very familiar with their work. But after spending some time researching and learning more about them, it was clear that we all need to do our best to make it to this event to meet the great people who lead this organization.

Early Identification and Intervention

One of the important aspects of Beacon Tree is their ability and available resources to help parents identify if a teenager’s rebellious or destructive behavior is indicative of a more serious problem. While many people are hesitant to seek help and advice on this aspect of their child’s behavior, it is part of responsible parenting and BeaconTree is a valuable resource. When kids are depressed, parents are often the last to know – unless they know what to look for and observe in their children.

According to their website,

“If we, as a society, offered as much assistance to parents of children who are suffering from anxiety or depression as we do the parents of a child with a health disease like cancer, we could avoid incidences like school shootings.”

They recognize the significance of early detection of depression or destructive behavior in kids, and intervention needed to potentially change the course of a life and many other lives affected. And that includes support and assistance to the parents of these troubled youth. (Click this link to review their article related to the CT tragedy).

Furthering Education

In addition to resources for depression, Beacon Tree takes their work miles further to help further education for kids.

Beacon Tree focuses on “financing and funding for families with at-risk teens, for the purpose of paying for private care/special educational facilities and programs, therapy and prescription drugs.” In the wake of recent weeks and years and the tragedies we’ve seen at the hands of young people with mental health issues, this organization is vital to our community.

They do great work to help those struggling with mental, emotional, and drug/alcohol issues by not only identifying their need for assistance, but helping them further their education through:

  • funding college scholarships and private high school grants for deserving teens struggling with these issues, and
  • assisting in the arrangement of long-term, low-cost financing for pre-secondary educational and treatment purposes

They do much more than that by providing information, resources, and guidance for a variety of things that helps students grow and develop in healthy learning environments. They offer assistance in locating cost-savings opportunities for education, finding emergency medical assistance, and tons more.
