Who Knew Fruitcake Science Could Be So Much Fun?

Dedicated to the notion that science is everywhere, the Science Museum of Virginia will be highlighting the laws of physics, thermodynamics and nutrition through the much maligned holiday pastry — the fruitcake. Some people actually eat them, but here we subject them to the rigors of scientific testing, observation and destruction! Whether you consider fruitcake a delicacy (really?) or the worst gift ever, it is a lot of fun torturing — we mean testing — the limits of this nut-filled enigma, so come enjoy the fruitcake when the Science Museum of Virginia presents Fruitcake Science, Monday, December 26-Friday, December 30.

Fruitcake Science is the leading science testing program of pastry in North America. Will it float, will it burn, will it freeze and what happens when you put it into a blender? It’s always good to test for gravity so we will be dropping fruitcake down several stories and cleaning the mess up later. On Thursday, December 29, noon-4 pm, step outside to watch a medieval siege machine (catapult) in action! Bring your broken presents and watch them launched hundreds of yards down the train tracks.

Fruitcake Science is included with Museum admission. Tickets are $10 for ages 4-12 and 60+, $11 for ages 13-59 and free for members. For more information call 804.864.1400 or visitwww.smv.org. The Science Museum of Virginia is located at 2500 West Broad Street, Richmond.
