May 2012 Rock Star: Katie Mardigian

Richmond mom Katie Mardigian

Richmondmom.com is proud to recognize Katie Mardigian as our May Rock Star of the month!

As you all know, Katie recently worked tirelessly to bring the movie “Bully” to a Richmond location (this was no easy task), and her review of the Bully movie is here. She then embarked on a tireless campaign to create an opportunity for parents and professionals to work together on solutions to help prevent bullying.

That hard work paid off on when the Anti-Bullying Town Hall Meeting took place at Canterbury Preschool. Richmondmom.com and Commonwealth Parenting Center sponsored the event and many of our Richmondmom.com readers were in attendance.

Katie is also a writer and contributor for our blog. “One of the most proud times I’ve been honored to witness: our Katie having the passion to bring Bully to RVA AND lead the movement for an Anti-Bullying Town Hall!” exclaims Kate Hall, Richmond CEO, after the May 17th event. “This event would not have occurred without the tenacity and persistence of one of our own Richmond moms.” Even Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor was in attendance and spoke on the importance of this issue and working toward solutions.

“My head is swirling with thoughts and ideas from last night’s Anti-bullying Town Hall, and I promise to get it all down in a post as soon as possible. But first I must thank the wonderful, passionate, supportive community of Richmondmom.com readers who joined us last night and who were there in spirit. Though there were many painful stories shared last night, there was also a sense of hope and cooperation. And that is a powerful first step!” Katie remarked.

Just like always, Katie gives thanks to those around her, and never seeks to take the spotlight for herself. Katie works tirelessly as a mom of three young girls. She and her husband deal with the many challenges of raising a family in a world where bullying and other acts of hatred have become way too commonplace.  Rather than sit back and do nothing, Katie steps up to the plate to make a difference.

She also reaches out within the community to volunteer and support charities that offer benefits to children and adults. She is passionate about creating a safe environment for her children and those around her — and she takes action to make it happen.

Katie explains that she finds joy and gratitude in the insanity of chasing around 3 little ones, which also provides her with constant inspiration for her freelance writing on motherhood, and inspires her to be vocal about issues that negatively impact all children.

Thanks to Katie for her hard work on the Anti-Bullying campaign and all she does for our community. That’s why Katie rocks and she’s our May Rock Star.

She will enjoy a much-deserved massage from Massage Envy. We thank them for sponsoring our Rockstars!
