Inactivity and Brain Development: Exercise is Fundamental for Lasting Connections

Written by: Dr. Mark Smith, Executive Director of Brain Balance Achievement Center

At Brain Balance, it really is all about balance in all aspects of life. We know that the science says that ADHD, Dyslexia, Learning Disorders, Asperger’s and Autism are all a form of developmental delay on one side of the brain more than the other. But did you know that physical exercise is absolutely necessary for synchronization of the connections between both sides of the brain?

To highlight that information, here is a brief report on a new national poll:

  • “Lack of exercise tops the list of the biggest concerns about kids’ health, according to a new survey of American adults. Not getting enough exercise was ranked a “big problem” by 39 percent of adults surveyed, according to the findings from the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health.
  • “Childhood obesity remains a top concern, and adults know it is certainly linked to lack of exercise,” Matthew Davis, director of poll, said in a statement. “But exercise offers many more benefits other than weight loss or preventing obesity — such as better attention and learning in school and improved sense of well-being,” Davis said.”
Exercise Promotes Brain Development

In other words, exercise promotes brain development and too many of our children do not get adequate brain stimulation and growth because of too many hours in front of computers and TV screens. When we do a comprehensive evaluation of brain development at Brain Balance, we check for two things: is there a difference between the developmental abilities of the right and left sides of the brain, and then we also include checking for physical abilities related to creating coherence between the right and left sides of the brain.

The way that it works is that first we build up the weaker side of the brain, and then we get both sides of the brain to talk together again in a coherent or synchronous fashion. It is sort of like having one side of the brain on a high-speed Internet connection and the other one on dial-up. Once they are both functioning at high-speed, we get them synchronized by using both of them at the same time through specific core exercises. Also, these core exercises keeps the brain functioning at a much higher-level overall.

In order to have our children reach their optimal potential they need to get adequate exercise and limit screen time, otherwise their brain development will be compromised during their critical growth periods of youth.
