Inaugural Nutzy’s Rotary Funn Run (with Strollers!) 12/1/12

The Richmond Flying Squirrels in partnership with the West Richmond Rotary Club have announced plans for the Inaugural Nutzy’s Rotary Funn Run scheduled for Saturday, December 1st.

The 5K course will begin at The Diamond and will incorporate part of the annual Dominion Richmond Christmas Parade route along Broad Street before ending back near the ballpark. All proceeds from the Funn Run will go to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond and First Things First of Greater Richmond.

“This is what makes me so proud to be a Rotarian”, said Executive Vice President of Xenith Bank and Chairman of Nutzy’s Rotary Funn Run Jeff O’Flaherty. “The opportunity to partner with respected Richmond organizations like the Flying Squirrels and the Dominion Christmas Parade, raise money for deserving causes and help area children while fulfilling our Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” – it’s a win-win-win!”

The Funn Run will begin at The Diamond at approximately 7:30 AM and conclude at 9:15 AM in time for participants to attend the Christmas Parade. The run will be limited to the first 2,000 entrants and registration will begin on Wednesday, September 1st. Cost to enter is $25 from September 1st – October 15th and is $35 from October 16th – November 15th. Registration closes on Thursday, November 15th.

“The West Richmond Rotary Club approached us about doing something this offseason that would accomplish their mission of benefiting kids while also engaging the community,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President and COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “I think this Funn Run has the potential of being an annual tradition in Richmond that people here look forward to every year. Being able to run part of the parade route where all of the people will be lined up is going to be a great memory-making experience for those that participate.”

One of the highlights of the event and the most unique aspect is the “Toddler Division”.  Participants in this division will be allowed to push a toddler in a stroller while navigating the course.

“In addition to helping kids, we also wanted to encourage families to be active and participate in the event,” added Parnell. “The Toddler Division will give the entire family a rare opportunity to be a part of a run like this. It’ll be awesome to see all of the strollers going along the parade route.”

Prior to the Funn Run on December 1st, the Flying Squirrels and West Richmond Rotary Club will host a pre-race day party at The Diamond on Friday, November 30th from 4 PM – 8 PM. In addition to race packet pickup, the event will feature the annual Toys for Tots drive, a Christmas tree lighting, live music and food and drink specials.
