A Giving Jar: Teaching Kids to Give Back

jarWe absolutely love this idea from Primrose Schools for teaching children the importance of saving, giving, and helping others. What better way to start the New Year?!

giving-jarPrimrose makes the following suggestion for parents and caregivers:

Help your child exercise “giving” muscles in 2013! Research says the foundation for developing values is laid before age 5, so teach generosity early on. A “give jar” is a great way for little ones to learn about giving – and to keep the holiday spirit alive all year round. They can use it to save money earned from chores to donate to charity!

This is a great way to teach kids and you can get them even more excited by allowing them to decorate their own giving jar. They can paint it, draw pictures to tape to the jar, add ribbons or whatever their imaginations come up with. Adding loose change, including part of their allowance, or putting money in the jar from a number of sources throughout the year will help them remember the importance of giving to help others.

Let’s keep ‘paying it forward’ throughout 2013 and help children learn to give back too. Leave us a comment and let us know how you like this idea and whether or not you’ll be doing this. We’d love to see lots of Richmond families adopt this tradition!

Be sure to visit one of the Primrose Schools in the Richmond area where you’ll find a welcoming environment and caring teachers – teaching kids how to live.
