Style Guide: Surviving a Virginia Winter

Style Guide 1

Stores have put their decorations on clearance, people are recovering from the holidays, Christmas trees are being taken down and people are…wearing shorts and flip-flops?! This time of year is associated with cold, falling snow, warm coats, fuzzy blankets and open fires but not for Virginia! I have been shocked at the tropical temperatures this year!  My favorite part of this season is wearing warm cozy sweaters and riding boots but my hopes and expectations are not being met with reality. This warm snap has made dressing somewhat of a challenge but I have some ideas to the beat the winter heat!

Away with the flannel and fleece lined leggings, on with the ankle jeans and cotton button ups! I use the following tips as a framework for my daily outfit on warm days. I can wear it all if I am chilly or I can do any combination of the three should it get warm. Here are some tips for beating the heat this winter:

  • Layers: Mornings have been chilly but by the time the afternoon sun hits I have been baking! I usually make up my layers by wearing a lightweight vest or sweater over top of a cotton button-up. I strategically choose my button ups so that they will still look great with or without a shell.
  • Scarves: The weather really has been beautiful but I personally want to dress like the season, cozy and snuggly! Since warm and snuggly hasn’t been an option lately, I have chosen to accessorize with scarves that are warm “seasonal” colors. I choose scarves that are a lightweight poly-blend to wear with my layers. My favorite has been the classic plaid or animal print this season. Also, I have been attempting to tie my scarves in new ways to change things up. Give it a shot! (Find of inspiration on our Pinterest Style Board)
  • Necklaces: Statement necklaces are a super fun addition to your outfits! I will wear the necklaces under my scarves so when and if I get hot and decide to take off my scarf I still have an outfit that looks put together.

Living in Virginia my whole life I should expect warm weather one day and freezing the next. I always hold out for a white winter but I think that will only be alive in my day dreams…maybe next year! For now, I will just stare longingly at my cozy sweaters and riding boots until a colder day.

How are you guys dressing this year? Do you have any fresh and new ideas for dressing for this season? I would love to hear from you all, please comment below!
