Virginia Repertory Theatre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern with a production of Steel Magnolias featuring an all-star cast.
The show:
Sixty years ago in 1953, six actors, two children, a dog and two pigs moved into a historic ruin called Hanover Tavern. The transplanted New Yorkers founded Central Virginia’s first professional theatre and named the company in memory of a deceased college friend, Barbara Barksdale.
When the founders, Muriel McAuley and Pete and Nancy Kilgore, learned that their new neighbors looked forward to eating on evenings out, they combined favorite recipes and created the nation’s first dinner theatre. They lived upstairs, performed downstairs, and served hearty meals in the historic rooms that fell in between. The restaurant at Hanover Tavern continues to serve dinner to theatre patrons today.
Bruce Miller, Artistic Director for Virginia Rep, loves to talk about the history of Barksdale Theatre and its importance in the regional theater movement in the early to mid 1900’s. “The movement to decentralize American theater created the first professional theaters outside of New York. Virginia’s Barter Theatre, (founded in 1933), Houston’s Alley Theatre (founded 1947), and Washington’s Arena Stage (founded in 1950), were all founded as a part of this movement and our friends from New York, Muriel McAuley and Pete and Nancy Kilgore, were not far behind them. The founders of Barksdale Theatre were American theater pioneers, determined to establish a regional theater of national standing in Central Virginia. Early Barksdale press releases reflect the founders’ goals to contribute to this new model of professional theater. When Barksdale and Theatre IV merged last year, forming Virginia Repertory Theatre, we all took a huge step toward transforming that dream into reality, and we are honored to continue their legacy.”
In the seasons that followed 1953, Pete, Muriel and Nancy produced Greater Richmond’s first professional productions of plays by Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill, George Bernard Shaw, Noel Coward, Thornton Wilder, William Inge and Edward Albee. The founders also became dynamic civic leaders. In defiance of Jim Crow laws, Barksdale was Virginia’s first performing arts organization to open its doors to integrated audiences and in 1973, Barksdale produced Virginia’s first professional play based on the African American experience, Lorraine Hansberry’s To Be Young, Gifted and Black.
Virginia Rep is delighted to stage Steel Magnolias as the anniversary production. This heart-warming comedy by Robert Harling is set in Northwest Louisiana, and based on the author’s own experience with the death of his sister. Six strong, southern women gather regularly at Truvy’s beauty salon to have their hair done and to share stories, recipes, triumphs, and loss. Under the direction of Steve Perigard, the show assembles some of Richmond’s most beloved female actors.
Steve Perigard’s directing talent is well known in the Richmond area where his work has been seen on the stages of Virginia Rep, Cadence Theatre, Richmond Shakespeare, Firehouse Theatre, Theatre Virginia, SPARC, Theatre VCU, Randolph Macon College, and Company of Fools. In addition to Steel Magnolias, Steve’s directing credits this past season include The Pillowman for Cadence Theatre, Hay Fever for Virginia Rep, and The Comedy of Errors for Richmond Shakespeare. Steve is on the adjunct performance faculty at SPARC and will be teaching and directing at Collegiate School in the fall.
Virginia Rep is delighted to bring back longtime local favorites for this production. Joy Williams (Nice People Dancing to Good country Music, First Baptist of Ivy Gap, Driving Miss Daisy, and Barefoot in the Park with Virginia Rep) plays the role of Truvy. Kelly Kennedy (On Golden Pond [RTCC for Best Actress], Circle Mirror Transformation, The
Clean House, and The Constant Wife for Virginia Rep), reprises her role of M’Lynn, first performed with The Company of Fools in Idaho. Catherine Shaffner (Nunsense for Virginia Rep, Learned Ladies For University of Richmond) and Jacqueline Jones (Deathtrap, Das Barbecü [RTD Phoebe Award] for Virginia Rep and Birth at Firehouse Theatre Project) return to Hanover Tavern as Ouiser and Clairee. Rounding out the cast are Aly Wepplo (A Thousand Clowns, Smoke on the Mountain, 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Seussical for Virginia Rep and Wait Until Dark and The Marvelous Wonderettes for Swift Creek Mill) as Shelby and Maggie Roop (Becky’s New Car, First Baptist of Ivy Gap, Doubt: A Parable, Guys and Dolls, Seussical and Hay Fever for Virginia Rep) as Anelle.

Richmond, VA – Virginia Repertory Theatre is excited to announce its new titles for the 2013/14 Season. Bruce Miller, Artistic Director of Virginia Rep, considers the upcoming roster to be diverse and dynamic. “As we approach the first anniversary of the merger of Barksdale and Theatre IV, we’re enjoying a real and palpable energy at Virginia Rep—the thrill of new beginnings. Pride is building around our goal of becoming a regional theatre of national standing. That pride is reflected in a season of new works, regional premieres, iconic musicals, and a celebration of the classics.”
After a year of transition, the upcoming season at Virginia Rep will bring a new focus on audience engagement through increased community collaborations, online video content, interviews with theatre artists, and pre- and post-show conversations. All Signature Season productions will be staged at the historic November Theatre. The season announcement coincides with the full renovation of the façade highlighting the architectural details of the 100 year-old building and contributing to the transformation of Richmond’s newly designated Arts District.
“Few things reflect the life of a community more than the quality and diversity of its homegrown cultural offerings. At Virginia Rep we’re privileged to engage in a vital conversation with an ever growing, discerning audience. In sync with the heartbeat of our great city, we perform live before over 180,000 metro residents each year.”
Virginia Rep’s Signature Season begins with the timeless American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, and ushers in the holidays with the renowned Broadway musical, Fiddler on the Roof. Tartuffe, the greatest and best known play from French theater master Moliere, will celebrate its 350th Anniversary in 2014, and fill the November Theatre with laughter in February. Other Desert Cities, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in drama, will introduce rising playwright Jon Robin Baitz to the Greater Richmond audience. The joyous, rousing musical adaptation of The Color Purple will conclude the Signature Season.
The Barksdale Season at Hanover Tavern celebrates its 60th anniversary this fall with the poignant and highly entertaining bio-play about legendary comedian George Burns, Say Goodnight Gracie, starring Scott Wichmann. Two Hanover shows will be world premieres – Bruce Miller’s A Lug Nuts Christmas and Bo Wilson’s The Charitable Sisterhood of the Second Trinity Victory Church. A revival of the hilarious Off Broadway hit, Olympus on My Mind, will charm a new generation of patrons.
The Children’s Theatre of Virginia, another part of Virginia Rep, kicks off its season announcement with the dedication of its new signage on April 10. All children’s shows, including the blockbusting Shrek the Musical will be staged at Willow Lawn. In addition to Shrek, children and family offerings include the internationally acclaimed Cashore Marionettes, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, and Go, Dog. Go! The family friendly lobby with coloring tables, the intimate theatre, and post-show actor “meet ‘n greets” have been enthusiastically embraced by young audiences and families. An increase in online content this year will include interviews with favorite characters and solid educational material. The Children’s Theatre also will continue its acclaimed work in children’s and family literacy through collaborations with the Shops at Willow Lawn, Richmond area public and private schools, and the Richmond Public Libraries.
Virginia Rep is delighted to strengthen its partnership with Cadence Theatre Company. The upcoming Theatre Gym season of bold, contemporary, award-winning plays will feature two of the most widely staged new plays in the country – Clydbourne Park, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, and Good People, winner of the 2011 New York Drama Critics Circle for Best Play. The third Cadence play, Detroit, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and recently ended a successful Off-Broadway run following its world premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.
Subscriptions and packages are currently available for all seasons. Single tickets will go on sale July 1.

60th Anniversary Season Announced under Virginia Rep
Richmond, VA – Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV announce that the two nonprofit theaters
will formally merge effective July 1, 2012 under a new name – Virginia Repertory Theatre (Virginia Rep). With a budget exceeding $5 million, four distinct venues, and an annual audience over 550,000, Virginia Rep will become the largest professional theater and one of the largest performing arts organizations in Central Virginia along with the Richmond Ballet, Richmond Symphony, and the Virginia Opera.
Barksdale and Theatre IV will celebrate the announcement and the unveiling of the new Virginia Rep sign this Sunday, May 20, at the November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) at 114 West Broad Street at 4:00 p.m. after the closing of Seussical, the last mainstage children’s production under the Theatre IV name. Virginia Rep will transition into the new organization between May 20 and July 1.
With 47 full time employees and over 400 part-time and contracted actors, teaching artists, administrative personnel, and production staff, Virginia Rep provides consistent employment to many of the area’s finest professional theater artists and is Central Virginia’s only professional theater to perform under a seasonal contract with Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers. Annual mainstage productions total over 450 performances on four stages, and the touring arm reaches over 400,000 students annually in Virginia and 32 states. According to external calculations by Virginians for the Arts in 2008, the combined economic impact of Barksdale and Theatre IV exceeds $23 million, the largest of any independent arts organization in Central Virginia.
Managing Director, Phil Whiteway, says the process has been years in the making. “We are thrilled to finally bring our two theaters together. The merger reflects the real impact that our organizations make on the Central Virginia community and creates a more efficient and sustainable nonprofit structure, eliminating duplication and positioning us for national funding. Our new single identity with a common website and messaging better serves all our constituents and establishes a clear continuum of programming for children, families, schools and adults.”
Virginia Rep will continue to produce or co-produce three adult seasons and one children’s season in addition to our educational touring plays. Bruce Miller, Artistic Director for Virginia Rep, says the mission of Virginia Rep will not change. “While the merger positions the theater as a more solid, forward thinking organization, our artistic goals have not waivered. We will continue to provide high quality theatre that speaks to us artistically and appeals to the entire Richmond community, including new works, dramas, musicals, children’s theater, comedies, and classics. Our commitment to produce art for the community’s sake has only been elevated and we are more dedicated than ever to enhancing our community through theater arts and outreach.”
History
Founded in 1975 by Bruce Miller and Phil Whiteway, Theatre IV was the first professional children’s theater in Virginia. What began as a small touring group with a focus on education and children’s health and safety, has evolved to become the second largest children’s theater in America, known for its educational touring arm and acclaimed season of mainstage productions for children and families. This coming season marks the 30th anniversary of Hugs and Kisses, a musical play that teaches children awareness about sexual abuse and provides the language they need to communicate with a trusting adult about inappropriate behavior. This award-winning production is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s principal child sexual abuse prevention program. In 2002, Theatre IV’s Buffalo Soldier, inspired by the life of Richmond centenarian Jones Morgan, became the first professional production to be performed inside the Pentagon, as a morale booster after 9/11.
Established at the historic Hanover Tavern in 1953 by six actors from New York, Barksdale Theatre was Central Virginia’s first professional performing arts organization and our nation’s first dinner theater. Under the forty- year leadership of Pete and Nancy Kilgore and Muriel McAuley, Barksdale Theatre brought America’s most acclaimed works to a Greater Richmond stage and produced the state’s first professional production of a play based on African American experience. In 1954, Barksdale became the first performing arts organization in Virginia to defy segregationist laws and perform before a racially mixed audience. In 1996 Barksdale moved to Willow Lawn to accommodate Tavern renovations. In 2001, Bruce Miller and Phil Whiteway assumed the leadership of Barksdale Theatre. They re-established the season at the renovated Hanover Tavern in 2006 and continued the Barksdale Signature Season at Willow Lawn. Since 2001, Barksdale and Theatre IV have shared management and some resources, but continued to operate as two separate nonprofit organizations with two boards, two budgets, and two communication systems.
In 2003 the landscape of professional theater changed in Richmond with the folding of TheatreVirginia, the leading professional theatre at the time. The Community Foundation and what is now CenterStage assembled a task force to look at the future of professional theater in Central Virginia. That Task Force and a rigorous community survey determined that the next major professional theater should build on the foundations established by Barksdale and Theatre IV. The task force findings prompted the boards of both Barksdale and Theatre IV to engage in years of strategic planning, an external development analysis, and a brand study finally leading to the merger and name change.
Upcoming Season
Virginia Rep continues the legacy established at Barksdale Theatre in 1953 and celebrates the beginning of the 60th Anniversary Season this August, building on the significant artistic contributions of both Barksdale and Theatre IV – over 21 World Premieres, important second productions, and some of the finest regional productions of nationally acclaimed works. Virginia Rep remains dedicated to producing at least one world premiere annually and bringing in national theater artists to fill approximately 10% of all acting, directing and design responsibilities.
The upcoming season will bring several venue changes. The entire downtown complex will be called Virginia Rep Center and house both the 100 year old, historic Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) and the smaller, studio style Theatre Gym. Virginia Rep’s adult Signature Season and large family musicals will move downtown to Virginia Rep Center, taking advantage of the enhanced artistic capacity of the stage and bringing more adults downtown to enjoy the restaurants and galleries of the arts district. Valet parking is available at the downtown venues.
Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre of Virginia (formerly Theatre IV) will relocate to Willow Lawn, where the thrust stage provides an intimate experience for younger audiences, and the newly renovated Willow Lawn provides family friendly shopping and dining along with convenient parking. Virginia Rep’s Barksdale Season at historic Hanover Tavern will continue the legacy of the country playhouse. Finally, Theatre Gym will feature works produced in partnership with Cadence Theatre Company.
