Here’s Something to Get All Fired Up About http://richmondmom.com/2013/12/27/heres-something-to-get-all-fired-up-about/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/12/27/heres-something-to-get-all-fired-up-about/#comments Fri, 27 Dec 2013 23:34:08 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=54426 By Guest Writer Rachel Price, All Fired Up

afuYour Resolution This Year Should Be…

Children have incredible imaginations, don’t they? They can create entire worlds out of play-doh and be entertained for hours creating planes, trains, and automobiles out of Lego building blocks.

Pablo Picasso once said “Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist once you grow up.” Picasso knew that creativity must be cultivated, or else it starts to fade as we get older. Like any other skill, making things beautiful takes practice. Be intentional this year about stretching and growing your creativity muscles, and your own creativity will come to you more and more easily!

Make your New Years Resolution to be more creative!

But how?

Taking classes at All Fired Up is a great way to get those juices flowing. Each month we have a selection of classes for kids AND adults, as well as some opportunities to save when you’re ready to let your imagination run wild!

Here are just a few events we have every month to choose from…

Kids Fun Night
The first Friday of every month is Kids Fun Night, from 6-8pm! Drop your kids off with us for two hours, and they will learn various clay techniques, think in three dimensions, and ultimately create an original work from wet clay. (Did you know? Clay building develops your child’s problem solving skills, and holistic thinking.)

COPYRIGHT BHPAfter creating a wet clay project, children will also have the opportunity to practice two-dimensional design principles as they glaze a ceramic project. Their finished pieces will not only be beautiful, but functional as well.

Kids will also enjoy a delicious pizza dinner and interact with other kids their age. Our friendly staff will guide them through the process and provide a safe environment to cultivate their creativity.

The best part? Kids Fun Night classes are only $25 a child! That’s such a great value for so many fun activities packed into two hours!

So join us for our upcoming Kids Fun Night on Friday, January 3rd, 2014 as we create a glass nightlight, & design and paint a dry erase board. Or, next month, on February 7th, when we create a heart-shaped candy dish from wet clay, and paint a bud vase.

Click this link  to learn more or sign up your kids for these upcoming classes today.

Technique Workshops
Kids aren’t the only ones with the chance to learn something new and exciting.

Each month, on the second Thursday of the month, we offer Technique Workshops for teens and adults. We hand-select a special design that anyone can learn and show you how to put your personal touch on your hand-made masterpiece.

These workshops vary from fun and functional pottery pieces, to easy yet exquisite glass fusing projects. Each month is a different design, and perfect for all skill levels. Our knowledgeable staff will be with you, step-by-step, to teach you the tricks and tips to make a seemingly difficult technique so much easier than you would’ve ever realized!

Join us this month, January 9th, from 6-8pm, as we teach you to create Nancy’s beautiful Dot Design on your very own martini glass. Or next month, February 13th, as we paint an oriental-inspired chopstick bowl (and ceramic fortune cookie, when you sign up with a friend!) To learn more about All Fired Up’s upcoming Technique Workshops, click here.

Youngster & You
afu2These classes are a great bonding opportunity for you and your young ones, as you work together to create a beautiful keepsake that will last a lifetime.

Each month, we release a new design that captures your little one’s fingers or toes in a unique way on a large dinner plate. Our friendly staff be by your side to help you get the perfect prints from your infant or toddler. The best part is that we do all the design work for you! You just come in with your little one, we’ll get the print, and then you’re free to go. We will finish the design, coat the entire piece in a clear glaze to protect it, and then fire it in our kiln so it will last for years to come!

Check out our January 7th design, which turns your toddler’s happy feet into adorable penguins! Or, come in February 4th to capture their fingers and toes in our precious “Love is Sweet” design. To see these designs and learn more about how it works, visit us at this link.

Ladies Night Out
This is your chance to kick back and relax! Just imagine a relaxing night creating your own work of art while gabbing with your best girl friends…

COPYRIGHT BHPThe last Thursday of every month, All Fired Up closes down the studio to the public at 6pm to give you a relaxing night off! There’s no limits to what you can try – pottery painting, glass fusing, or even wet clay projects – so you can really let your imagination run wild! We even stay open late, until 9pm, to make sure you have plenty of time to finish your piece.

You’ll also automatically receive 10% off your piece, and snacks are provided and on-the-house, so be sure to call your local studio and register your group so we know you’re coming.

Our next Ladies Night Out is Thursday, January 30th, which gives you plenty of time to invite your friends and make sure it’s a fantastic night out.

Resolve to Be More Creative
“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

VincentVanGogh-PaintThere’s nothing that can keep you from a resolution like this but yourself. Refuse to believe the lies that run through your head, like, “I’m not creative” or “I can’t even draw stick people.” You have much more creativity in you than you realize, if you just give yourself a chance to try.

Alright, I just have to share one more quote before I get off my soap box. Vincent Van Gogh, creator of one of the world’s most beloved paintings, “Starry Night,” once said, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

(For more inspirational quotes about creativity to get your motivated, visit our Pinterest board.)

Easy DIY Ornaments that Sparkle and Shine http://richmondmom.com/2013/12/09/easy-diy-ornaments-that-sparkle-and-shine/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/12/09/easy-diy-ornaments-that-sparkle-and-shine/#comments Mon, 09 Dec 2013 19:53:32 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=53762

Thanks to Rachel Price of All Fired Up for this DIY project that adults and kids will love! Remember that classic song from the old clay-mation Rudolph Christmas movie?

It goes like this:

“Silver and Gold, Silver and Gold, means so much more when I see Silver and Gold decorations on every Christmas tree…”

Well, these days, there are dozens of color combinations you can choose from to decorate your Christmas tree. But we thought we’d bring back some of that classic Christmas sparkle with this silver and gold ornament craft.

Total project cost: Just $5!

What you’ll need:

  • Plastic Ornament
  • Silver Glitter
  • Gold Paint
  • Gold Sharpie
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Glue
  • Small Funnel
  • Paintbrush
  1. Paint your child’s hand or foot with gold acrylic paint, and carefully place on the ornament. Carefully wiggle each finger or toe down to insure a good print. Allow to dry while you wash your little one’s hands or feet. (Tip: You may want to go back and add more gold paint later to enhance the print and make it easier to see.) Add their name and year on the ornament with gold Sharpie.
  2. Next, lightly spray your spray adhesive into the ornament and add the silver glitter into the top, using the funnel. Put your finger over the top and shake so the glitter lightly coats the inside of the ornament.
  3. Glue on the top of the ornament, making sure to fill any gaps with glue so that, once dry, no stray pieces of glitter can escape! Allow to dry and then add it to your lovely Christmas tree decorations!

All Fired Up logo

Christmas is officially less than eight weeks away, so there is still plenty of time to create gifts that are meaningful, one-of-a-kind, and will be treasured for many years to come. Sound like a tall order? Consider these gift ideas from All Fired Up and be inspired to create a family keepsake that is both functional and beautiful.

1. Handprint Ornaments

DSC_0314Grandparents, Godparents, Aunts, and Uncles – they all have something in common: they LOVE your kids! Time between visits are always too long, and time spent together is never quite long enough.

Give them a gift that will remind them how important they are to you and your children. Create a Christmas ornament from your child’s hand print! Capture this special moment in time, because their hands will never be this small again. Family members and friends will especially love pulling this extra-special ornament out year after year, as they watch your children grow.

All Fired Up has a great Christmas Ornament Special going on now where they will help you get the perfect print in wet clay, and take care of all the painting and firing for you – for only $10 per ornament! Please allow a ten (10) day turn around time for wet clay ornaments.

There will never be another ornament exactly like it, and your friends and family will know it was hand-made, straight from the heart.

2. Themed Cup & Saucer Giftsafu

We love this idea, because it is so incredibly versatile! Pick something that your loved one enjoys, and theme an entire gift after it. For example, if they have an affinity for tea, buy several different kinds and styles for them to enjoy, and paint them their very own tea-themed cup and saucer they can drink tea from! It could even say something clever like, “Hello, is it TEA you’re looking for?”This idea can be modified for just about anything. Does someone you know really love music? Buy them an iTunes gift card, a pair of concert tickets, and paint the cup & saucer with music notes, or to look like their favorite album cover. (The saucer would look even great painted as a vintage record!) They can study to their favorite jams, and enjoy a cup of hot coffee in their new hand-painted music mug.Okay, so let’s say they’re not really a music lover. What if they have a special place in their heart for the great American sport, Baseball? Paint the cup like an actual baseball (Rawlings inscription, red lacing, and all) and the saucer like a catcher’s mitt! Include some tickets to a local game, some peanuts and cracker jacks, and you’ve got yourself a great themed gift!

3. Give the Gift of Creativity!

all fired upSo let’s say you’re not what you might call “the artistic type,” but you know someone who is. What better way to celebrate their creativity than to give them free reign to try something new? Gift cards to All Fired Up are a wonderful way for them to explore the exciting worlds of Pottery Painting, Glass Fusing, Wet Clay Building, and Wheel Throwing!

Super Cheap Super Fun Activities for Kids http://richmondmom.com/2013/10/17/super-cheap-super-fun-activities-for-kids/ http://richmondmom.com/2013/10/17/super-cheap-super-fun-activities-for-kids/#comments Thu, 17 Oct 2013 22:34:25 +0000 http://richmondmom.com/?p=50424 Who doesn’t love crafts – and especially when they’re holiday-themed?

Thanks to Rachel at All Fired Up for this great craft idea and article.

all fired upHalloween is “creeping up” so we came up with a simple and super cheap craft that doubles as an age-appropriate activity the kids can enjoy leading up to the holiday. The great thing about this project is that it works for any age – from toddlers to pre-teens – because you can easily change the difficulty based on your needs.

What you’ll need:

  • Grab an orange foam sheet (you can get one from Hobby Lobby or AC Moore for about 75 cents)
  • Some black and white paint
  • A wide brush, black sharpie, and pair of scissors

I had everything but the foam sheet, so this craft was less than $1 in total cost!

First, allow your kids to decorate the foam sheet. For younger kids, this will probably mean using an orange or green marker on the foam sheet for scribbles, but older kids can help draw the spiders web with a black sharpie.

Once sufficiently decorated:

  1. Paint your child’s palm and four fingers (excluding the thumb) and print it horizontally on the sheet.
  2. Press down and wiggle each finger individually to ensure a good print.
  3. Lift their hand, re-coat with paint, and print their palm in the same place, but with the fingers sticking out the other direction.
  4. Add two fingerprint touches of white paint for eyes, and you’ve got a spooky spider print!
  5. Write their name and the year in a corner, and place to the side to dry.
  6. Once the paint is no longer tacky, you can take a pair of scissors to the foam sheet and cut out custom puzzle pieces. I stayed with very simple large wavy pieces since the puzzle was for a toddler, but if you have an older kid who wants more of a challenge you can cut it into small or more random pieces for added difficulty.

It’s flexible and can withstand toddler crumpling and tossing, and can be taken out for years to come as a Halloween activity. If it ever gets too easy, just cut a few extra slices!
