October 26, 2013 is Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
Why Dispose of Unused Drugs?

According to Justice.gov:

  • Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse.
  • Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision.
  • The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America.
  • The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet.
  • Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply.
  • Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
  • Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs. But if a program is not available:
    • Take the meds out of their bottles;
    • Mix them with something unappealing like used kitty litter or coffee grounds;
    • Seal them in a bag or disposable container, and throw that away.

Richmond Area Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and Document Shredding

Join West Creek Emergency Center for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day to safely dispose of your unused or expired prescription drugs.

This year the event also offers document shredding, tech recycling and the donation of clothing and household goods to help organize your life.

  • Prescription drugs in containers or bags. No needles will be accepted.
  • Maximum of 4 boxes of paper items for shredding per vehicle.

The free event will raise awareness about lung health and will feature a presentation by Mackena Bell, professional NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver for Rev Racing and Dr. Pablo Gonzalez of the Virginia Cancer Institute. An outdoor photo op with Bell and her race car will follow.

The free event will be held at the Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital, Johnston-Willis Hospital, 1401 Johnston-Willis Drive, Richmond. The presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the photo session with Bell and her race car from 6:30-7:30 p.m. – See more at this link.

We are staffed 24/7 by physicians and clinical staff with special training in pediatric and adult emergency care to serve all of your ER needs.  Our services include an on-site, full-service lab with point-of-care testing, a full range of imaging (x-ray, CT and ultrasound), and expedited transfers for those patients who need inpatient or specialty care at Henrico, Parham or Retreat Doctors’ Hospitals.

We welcome both ambulance and walk-in patients.

When your child needs medical attention, we offer the pediatric expertise they require in a warm, caring and less stressful environment.  Our team is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) to ensure the most advanced care is given to your child.

A private, pediatric-themed room for our youngest patients provides families with a soothing atmosphere during their visit.  All of our treatment takes place behind closed doors ensuring complete patient confidentiality and a more serene ER experience.

In addition to emergency care, we are open 24/7 for your outpatient imaging and lab needs.  We provide walk-in or same-day services for most physician-ordered imaging and lab procedures without the ER fee.  Only normal insurance co-pay fees apply.  Our expert staff of board-certified radiologists and technologists work closely with your physician to get you on your way to diagnosis, treatment and good health so you can get back to your life.
