Press Release

RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 15, 2014 – Area Fas Mart® stores are launching a promotion on January 15, 2014 that could make one lucky shopper and one online contestant each $1 million richer.

Richmond nonprofits HomeAgain and Caritas were nominated by employees of Fas Mart convenience stores to vie for a chance to win $20,000. In short, HomeAgain and Caritas are among about 15 nonprofits in the markets served by Fas Mart’s parent GPM Investments that could win the $20,000 by accumulating the most votes online at www.WIN1MM.com.

Fas Mart®’s Million-Dollar Scratch Card Game has two parts:

  1. An in-store component where customers purchase a specified product, such as a candy bar or soda, to receive a scratcher card and can instantly win cash prizes by scratching off the right boxes; and,
  2. A second chance to win $1 million – by submitting a code from the bottom of the scratcher card to www.WIN1MM.com. Every game piece has the potential to be a winning card for various cash prizes ($1, $2, $5, $10, $50 and one $1 million card) in a game that includes $5 million in potential prizes.

Fas Mart® has about 20 stores in the Metro Richmond area so there are plenty of locations to visit!

Customers also will be encouraged to vote for their favorite charity among a list, which initially includes about 15 nonprofits nominated by employees in markets served by Fas Mart® parent company GPM Investments, LLC. The nonprofit organization with the most votes will receive a $20,000 donation from GPM – there is no purchase necessary, and anyone can vote for their favorite nonprofit.

“Fas Mart® is all about speed and convenience, helping busy consumers get what they need so that they can get on with their day,” said Bill Reilly, senior vice president, marketing for Fas Mart®. “We’ve designed this promotion for shoppers in a hurry – scratch and go.”

Reilly also emphasized the online component of the promotion. “We’re urging people to play online for another chance to win as well as to vote to make a significant impact on a worthwhile nonprofit.”

Richmond, VA (December 20, 2013)—The Richmond Kiwanis Foundation donated $9,000 to First Things First of Greater Richmond (FTF) to provide at-risk youth with healthy relationship programs and to help fund a part-time youth and singles program specialist. The support comes as part of a growing partnership between the two organizations.

At their weekly meeting held at the Virginia Historical Society on Dec. 16, Kiwanis President Mark Atchison presented a check to FTF Executive Director Truin Huntley.

The partnership will provide increased volunteer opportunities for Kiwanis to support FTF’s major events, youth and fatherhood programs.

“The Kiwanis Club of Richmond has a tradition of supporting causes that benefit children,” said Charlie Trible, treasurer for the Richmond Kiwanis Foundation. “That is our primary mission, and we believe that First Things First plays an important role in benefitting children. We believe that teaching healthy relationship skills will result in an improved economic benefit to young families and their children.”

In 2013, First Things First facilitators taught healthy relationship skills to nearly 400 at-risk teens in Henrico County Public Schools, Richmond Public Schools, Camp Diva, Peter Paul Development Center in Church Hill, Beaumont Juvenile Detention Center and Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center.

The national, best-practice curriculum taught by First Things First, Relationship Smarts, teaches self-awareness, maturity, values, how to handle peer pressure and conflict resolution. The curriculum provides knowledge, guidelines and skills for how to build positive relationships that don’t include sex, but encourages students to finish their education, begin working, and get married prior to bearing children.

First Things First of Greater Richmond is a community nonprofit dedicated to strengthening families for a better community by: advocating for strong, healthy, lifelong marriages; increasing fathers’ and mothers’ active involvement in the lives of their children; and working to prevent out-of-wedlock and teen pregnancies in the greater Richmond area.Visit www.FirstThingsRichmond.org for info.

The mission of the Kiwanis Club of Richmond is to improve the quality of life for children in the metropolitan area of Richmond by contributing the time and talents of the membership and the financial resources of the Club in an atmosphere of caring, service, fellowship and learning.

To help us live.

Have you considered supporting the St. Jude Give Thanks.Walk right here in Richmond on November 23rd?

They make it easy to help – and registration is free!

Then fundraise!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a place close to my heart. I have had the opportunity to visit St. Jude in Memphis, Tennessee in 2001, and again last year, both times to complete the St. Jude Half-Marathon. What I lacked in speed, (I walked it, after all), I made up for in enthusiasm.

So you know where your miles, dollars and words of encouragement are going, here is a glimpse of my amazing experience in Memphis last year to think about as you contemplate making a difference for children…

memphis-marathon-feature-volunteersIt was hopeful, humbling, inspirational and empowering.  Although you might expect that the finish of 13.1 miles was the highlight, it wasn’t.  At the starting line, there was all the typical excitement at a race, but the magic occurred around the 3-mile mark, as we wound our way through the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital campus.  The street was lined with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers, siblings, grandparents and aunts and uncles – all who had familiar ties with patients from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Patients waved pom poms, and held signs that WE were their heroes, thanking US.  People were high fiving me and some actually stopped me and graciously shook my hand tightly with both of their hands, with tears in their eyes saying, “Thank you for helping to save my daughter” or “thank you for helping my grandson”.  It was humbling and empowering all at the same time.  And it fortified me to race on.  I thought of those families and all of my sponsors at some point during the race.

The day before the race, I toured St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  They have made great strides over the years since my last visit 10 years ago, both in architectural change and in terms of cancer research.   And all of that research is passed on around the country to local hospitals, so that children in Richmond can receive a protocol developed at St. Jude, right here in RVA.  Some children who are at St. Jude receive services at the hospital for up to 3 years.  Everything is very child centered, and family centered.  Children are transported in wagons instead of wheelchairs.  Children’s art is woven throughout the hospital.  The cafeteria at first glance looks like most hospital cafeterias – except that families receive meal tickets so they are not burdened with the cost of food and can focus on recovery.  Danny Thomas, the founder had a clear vision that the hospital be family focused, and to that end, doctors, nurses, other staff, patients and families all “break bread together” in the same cafeteria. What a fantastic example of support, that goes far beyond the clinical aspects of support.

Thank you for considering helping this important organization.  So how can you help a child today?  Please consider registering, forming a team, and fundraise!  It’s all very easy:

1.       Register for free at http://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Walk/Walk?pg=entry&fr_id=8249

2.       Register as a Team Captain and get your friends, family, and coworkers involved by registering them on your team.

3.       Fundraise! There are prizes for every incentive level you hit, and all of the proceeds directly benefit the kids at St. Jude.
