Each class provides focused attention on a specific media, skill or subject, and each week brings a selection of unique choices. Morning studio classes (9:00am – 12:00pm) and afternoon studio classes (1:00 – 4:00pm) classes are available for all age groups. Enrollment is limited to 10 students per class to allow for individual instruction and learning. Some classes integrate teamwork or collaborative projects.

Available for ages 5 to 14 and in session from June 18 to August 29, Rainbow Station’s program operates using a unique but incredibly powerful system for campers: the power of choice. Prior to the camp’s kick off, kids are given a guidebook that lists afternoon mini-courses to choose from on a weekly rotation, with topics ranging from sports to survival skills, journal writing to belly-dancing. Kids have the ability to pick and choose the mini-course that best suits their interests and skills, ensuring that they stay engaged and, perhaps more importantly, have fun.
“At Rainbow Station, we are constantly looking for ways to give children the independence and flexibility that they desire, while also providing them with the structure and learning that they need,” says Rainbow Station Inc. Vice President Laurie Acree. “Our mini-courses are a fantastic way for us to maintain that structure but still allow the campers to choose how they spend their time.”
And while kids do get to choose their placement for the mini-courses each week, they often times are not aware of the educational opportunities that are present in all of Rainbow Station’s summer programs. Each tribe of 15 campers has a tribe leader who holds a college degree, has been trained in the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and is incorporating Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) instruction into the camper’s activities. This ensures that children are being challenged with age-appropriate material while still enjoying themselves.
The Rainbow Station Amazing Races and Places summer camp runs from 6:30am to 6:30pm Monday-Friday. Each Friday the campers go on a field trip that often coincides with the overall theme for that week, such as “African Safari Adventure” or “Thrill of Victory: London Summer Olympics.”

We did a week-long camp with one of our kiddos last year and he tapped into his inner artist and loved it!
The one-week classes for ages 6-16 give them a unique opportunity to work directly with professional artists at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond who will teach new skills and encourage individual expression.
Morning and afternoon classes available; students are welcome to sign up for a morning and afternoon class and enjoy a packed lunch during the 45-minute supervised break between sessions.
Tuition for each week-long Artventure class is $115 for members and $125 for non-members. Tuition includes materials fees unless otherwise noted, and some classes may require items brought from home. VisArts provides a snack for students on the first day of class, and parents are asked to provide snack for the remainder of the week.
The summer Artventures camp schedule is available by clicking here and members and non-members can register now. Scholarship assistance is also available.
For summer 2011 they have new classes in every studio (except glass.) Here are just a few of them:
The gang on a trek at Virginia Fishing Adventures
Last summer, my (then) eight-year-old attended his first week of fishing camp with Virginia Fishing Adventures.
They went to so many lakes around Richmond, and I think the chance to ride the bus and hang out with the other kids was almost as exciting as baiting the hook and dropping the line in to see what would bite.
All week, they hopped around the city seeking the friskiest fish for their lines, and each day when I picked him up he was beaming with excitement to share what they’d caught. Lunch was provided, so it was an easy drop-off and pick-up at River City Outfitters. We did the Virginia Fishing Adventures Day Camp for kids from 6-14, and there are also overnight fishing camps and weekend fishing camps to choose from.
They have a calendar of events highlighting all the cool activities they have for Richmond kids, including mountain biking clinics.
One of the biggest differences was the team at Virginia Fishing Adventures; Tee and Key have been teaching camps for a while and they love what they do, it really shows.
If you’re looking for a Richmond summer camp that will make a lasting impression on your Richmond kid, speaking from experience this is one of my favorites.
This year, our now six-year-old will join his big brother for all the fun, and they are counting the days until school is out and they are out on the water with the “big boys” having fun the old-fashioned way.
]]>Holy smokes, that’s good stuff. Get in on it now. Romp n’ Roll is a site sponsor of Richmondmom.com, so please support ‘em! They’re a locally-owned Richmond business and give back to the Richmond community, too.
