It’s a Time to be Thankful

My “Thankfulness Journal” doesn’t get nearly enough attention – and Thanksgiving week is the perfect time to bring it up to date. After all, we have so much to be thankful for it’s hard to imagine not updating a journal every day with thanks.

As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, there never seems to be enough time to get everything done. Thinking about how challenging it can be to get the shopping done, gifts wrapped, cookies baked, meals prepared, cards written — and still find time to attend many of the wonderful holiday events that Richmond has to offer — made me realize that the holidays can become insane if we let them and when that happens, we forget to be thankful.

That’s when I decided to create a list of things to be thankful for today:

  1. I’m thankful that every day gives us a new chance to learn something new.
  2. I’m thankful that we have a chance to do something for someone else every day.
  3. I’m thankful that I have a loving husband, 2 wonderful daughters, 2 incredible son-in-laws, 3 precious grandchildren, and 2 bonus grandchildren.
  4. I’m thankful that there are men and women willing to risk their lives so that we can live in freedom.
  5. I’m thankful that God created a world filled with flowers and trees, clouds and rainbows, rivers and streams, and all that nature has to offer.
  6. I’m thankful for my health.
  7. I’m thankful for friends.
  8. I’m thankful for babies.
  9. I’m thankful for love.

The thankfulness list can go on and on.  This year, I will take time to give special thanks for the family around us on Thanksgiving as we gather together at our house for food and fellowship with relatives from near and far.

And as we prepare for the Christmas holiday, I will strive to focus on the reason for the season instead of the insanity of over-spending, over-cooking, over-eating, and over-doing everything. That should leave more time for reflecting and being thankful.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
