The Week Ahead: January 23 – 29, 2012

Join us on Monday, January 23 at the new Richmond Brain Balance Achievement Center to celebrate our Grand Opening! Come meet the founder of Brain Balance, Dr. Robert Melillo, who literally wrote the book on functional disconnection syndrome, the best-seller “Disconnected Kids: The Groundbreaking Brain Balance Program for Children with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Neurological Disorders”. We’ll have the team from 103.7 The River broadcasting live from 1-3 pm, a ribbon cutting at 12 pm with our friends from the Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce, tours of the center, and other fun activities for the whole family. RACE: Are We So Different? at The Science Museum of Virginia. Join us for Family Cultural Saturday: Celebrating Cultural Heritage through Dance as we open this groundbreaking exhibition that examines the topic of race from scientific, historical and cultural perspectives. Highlights include an 11 am, reserved seating, family program by performing artist Teja Arboleda who challenges audiences to wipe away assumptions about identity that limit us and a 2 pm presentation by Chickahominy Tribe Chief Stephen R. Adkins, who is also Deputy Director of  Human Resource Management for the Commonwealth of Virginia. RACE is a project of the American Anthropological Association and is funded by the Ford Foundation & National Science Foundation. Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra 50th Anniversary Celebratory Concert Saturday, January 28 – 7pm at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage, 612 East Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23219. WHAT: The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Program (YOP) celebrates 50 years of providing orchestral instruction to students in Virginia.  The celebratory concert will feature all four ensembles of YOP as well as alumni of the program. Don’t miss it!

Join the Museum of the Confederacy and the Historic Byrd Theatre for the 2nd Edition of Civil War Cinema. The feature presentation will be “The Conspirator,” Robert Redford’s historical drama about the trial of Mary Surratt starring Robin Wright, James McAvoy, Tom Wilkinson and Kevin Kline. Prior to the movie, a champagne & chocolate reception will be held in the theatre’s lobby and Mary Surratt biographer Elizabeth Trindall will give a short lecture. All proceeds benefit.

Metro Collection – Mozart Symphony No. 35 – January 29, 2012. The third installment of the Metro Collection series features three Richmond Symphony musicians performing Barber’s Capricorn Concerto – principal flute Mary Boodell, assistant principal oboe Shawn Welk, and principal trumpet Rolla Durham.  Boodell, Welk and Durham are available for press and media interviews.
