Grandparents Stimulating the Economy: Oh Yeah!

The state of the economy seems to be on the minds of most everyone and for good reason. The economy has seen a tumultuous few years and many have seen their savings and retirement accounts plummet. The good news is that we are slowly pulling out of the worst recession that most of us have ever seen.

As I ponder the state of the economy, I wonder if grandparents can play a vital role in helping make significant improvements. After all, Pew Research Foundation reports indicate that the net worth of households headed by those 65 years of age and older has grown by over 49 percent since 1984 (not that I’m near 65 yet!). But imagine grandparents stimulating the economy by having fun!

It’s a novel idea and one that many might reject. But consider that grandparents who can afford to spend a little more money could do it now – instead of leaving it for others to spend when they’re gone. Not only will it create fun for grandkids, it will get grandparents more involved in their lives and help infuse a little more money into the economy.

Taking the grandchildren on a trip might be one way to do it. Or simply taking them out for an ice cream cone could work. Grandparents can spring for membership at The Science Museum of Virginia or The Children’s Museum of Richmond. Consider purchasing a membership to Lewis Ginter for the grandkids and their parents or set them up for a weekend at Great Wolf Lodge. Enjoy an afternoon at a Mad Hatter Tea Party with lots of good food and fun. Register them and pay for some valuable classes at Brain Balance or enjoy a show at Theatre IV with them.

You can use your Savvy Saver card to make many events even more affordable.

And you could consider purchasing an autographed copy of Richmond Rocks by Kate Hall for the grandkids (insert smiley here).

I’m just sayin’…….

We have lots of opportunities to make life fun and enjoy time with our grandkids — and we can stimulate the economy at the same time. Grandparents are no longer rocking in their rocking chairs – they’re rockin’ with the grandkids!

Let us know how you’re stimulating the economy by spending time with your grandkids – let’s get this economy back on track!
