Alberta Elementary School Tuscaloosa, AL ChevySXSW Visit

Last Spring I was travelling with my family to South Carolina for Spring Break when I received a tweet from @WXDan that basically said ‘GET OFF THE ROAD!” A line of severe storms and tornados were coming east and we were right in the middle of it all. We pulled over and sat out the storm in a hotel. When we came out and resumed our drive there was damage every where. Nothing like I had ever seen before.

Wednesday we continued our journey south to visit a classroom that is/was part of Alberta Elementary School that was destroyed by an F4 tornado last spring.

This is what the area looks like today…

Temporary CVS

This is the classroom they are in…

They don’t expect to be back in their own school for at least 2-3 years but it does not slow these kids down.  They were strong and inspiring and taking their new classroom all in stride.

My friend Dan Goff has not only helped share awareness for but he also does an incredible job of helping educate about weather and this is one of my favorite posts Ask Weather Dan: Tornadoes and Topography
