It’s the last week of summer vacation for lots of kids while others are already heading back to school this week. But the fun and activities for kids and families does not stop here!

Stories at the Museum: National Hispanic Heritage Month at the Virginia Historical Museum. September 1-15.  Special educator-led group readings and craft activities.

Body Worlds & the Brain at the Science Museum of Richmond through Sunday, September 23. Body Worlds open until 6 pm Friday and Saturday through Labor Day (last tickets have 4:45 pm entry time). Body Worlds open until 5 pm Sunday-Thursday (last tickets have 3:45 pm entry time).

Save a Brain at the Science Museum of  Virginia – Now-Sunday, September 23. Help a bike-riding child minimize head injuries by donating $10 to give a helmet to a child in need. How People Make Things at the Science Museum of Virginia – Now-Sunday, October 7. Use real tools, materials, machines and processes of manufacturing in this interactive exhibition inspired by the factory tour segments from the “Mister Roger’s Neighborhood” television series. Explore the four manufacturing processes of cutting, molding, deforming and reassembling in a fun and safe manner. Included with Museum admission.

Bitten by the Bug at the Science Museum of Virginia Monday, August 20-Sunday, November 25. Check out this art gallery that has a father and son connection as well as an art and science connection! Chris Semtner paints wonderful bugs. No doubt his fascination grew as he watched his father, an entomologist, work at this profession and love. Bitten by the Bug features Semtner’s bug paintings and specimens and tools of the trade supplied by his father. Chris Semtner’s is Director of the Poe Museum. Included with Museum admission.

Richmond’s 25th Best of Bash – Join Richmond Magazine and RVA’s finest as we “Make the Best of the Worst Day of the week” at the Best Of Bash on August 27th. Net proceeds will benefit three charities chosen by readers (SPCA, SCAN and Massey Cancer Center). Event will feature live music, performances and guest appearances. Winning restaurants will serve signature dish samples, plus guests will “Taste the Local” beer. Wine samples will also be available from select wineries. (Full servings can be purchased.) Guests will be entertained with games, art, photo ops, giveaways and other fun. General admission begins at 6:30. There will be a VIP hour prior with special previews, Hall-of-Fame signature dishes and cocktails, and open bar.

Henrico Concert Band at Dorey Park by the Lake at 7:00 p.m. The Henrico Concert Band will perform a series of three outdoor concerts. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend a casual evening in the park listening to your favorite band music! In case of inclement weather, the concerts may be cancelled. There will be no rain dates. Girl Power Fundraiser – Mommy and Daughter Date Night at Spirited Art. Come and paint “Girl Power”!  You can customize with your name. This will be painted on a 10×20″ canvas.  See you soon!  All ages are welcome to come and paint this evening.

Virginia Blood Services Blood Drive from 4-7 pm at Virginia Center Commons. As a part of the Virginia Blood Service’s 2nd Annual Summer Survival program, Virginia Center Commons will be opening its doors as a site for an end of summer blood drive from August 28-30. Donors may visit the area near JC Penney to participate and receive a free t-shirt as well as will be entered for a chance to win a $500 Visa gift card.

Nobody Told Me (All Moms) on August 28, 2012 at 6:30 pm (free) at Innsbrook. Commonwealth Parenting Family Educator offers good conversation, great tips and lots of support for moms of children of all ages.  Bring your questions.  Infants in carriers are welcome.

Pottery Barn – Kids of all ages are invited to join Pottery Barn Kids for story time every Tuesday. Members receive an official Book Club Passport at their first story time and a special gift after attending five story times.

Richmond Food Truck Court from 6-9 pm at the Virginia Historical Society. Head to the Virginia Historical Society every Tuesday and Friday night this summer for the RVA Food Truck Court, a gathering of over 10 gourmet mobile catering vendors. Participating food trucks will offer gourmet chef inspired food, specialty beverages, and desserts.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Young @ Art: Art-tastic Elements. August 30 from 10-11 a.m. for ages 2-5 accompanied by an adult. $10 per child (members $8) – adults free. Henrico Community Band.  Free at 7 pm at Deep Run Nature Pavilio for all ages. The Henrico Concert Band and the Henrico Community Band will each perform a series of three outdoor concerts. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend a casual evening in the park listening to your favorite band music! In case of inclement weather, the concerts may be cancelled.

Barnes & Noble Storytime at Short Pump Children’s Storytime: Toddlers and Preschoolers (Ages 6 and Under). Join us each Thursday for our Children’s Storytime. On the third Thursday of each month, we’ll have a special visit from Seymour and the Children’s Museum.

Friday, August 31

Deadline to sign your child up for the Special Olympics FREE Young Athletes Program.

“Coming of Age” Benefit Concert.  7 pm – Over 50 of Culture4myKids’ young people will bless the Dog Town Theater stage with songs, dances, cultural lessons, and drum rhythms. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. The concert will feature: Taaluma Youth Dance and Drum Company, Higher Achievement Scholars, and other C4MK summer workshop and camp participants.  Proceeds to benefit Culture4MyKids’ Nea Onnim Scholarship Fund. Summer of Culture celebration.

Fun in the Sun at Spirited Art – Kids Combo Class with All Fired Up. Come on out for “Fun in the Sun”. This class will paint “Flip Flops” on a 11×14″ canvas with Spirited Art and will be followed by working with All Fired Up “Flip Flop” clay project.  Send off Summer with us on our last “Fun in the Sun” Friday kids class.  This class will go from 10:00 am – 12:15 pm.

Goal Post Football Game September workshop at Home Depot 9 am – noon.

Join us for the Latin Dance Exhibition on Saturday, September 1st from 2-3 p.m. lower level, in front of Macy’s South. The Richmond Chapter of Ballroom Dancers will demonstrate the Tango, Cha-Cha, Samba and you’ll be able to join the fun when they ask the audience to join in for line dancing!

Rhonda is the mother of two adult daughters and a grandmother to five wonderful grandchildren – and our only grandmother on staff. She spent 25 years in corporate healthcare managing prenatal and disease management programs.
