October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. TNCS is hosting an event that will help parents and caregivers understand dyslexia. Check it out and register early to attend.

State Fair of Virginia at the Meadow Event Park next to Kings Dominion. Animals, agriculture, rides, food, music, fine arts, crafts, competitions, and more. The State Fair is ON this week!

Monday, October 1

Bitten by the Bug — Meet Artist Chris Semtner – Wednesday, October 3, 1 pm – Meet artist Chris Semtner who paints wonderful bugs, he’ll be in the café. Semtner’s art is most likely inspired by this father, entomologist and Virginia Tech Southern Piedmont AREC Professor Emeritus Paul Semtner. The Semtner display Bitten by the Bug includes father Paul’s specimens and son Chris’s paintings. And yes, if you recognize Chris Semtner’s name, he is Director of the Poe Museum.

Silver Diner at CMoR Central – Monday, October 1, 2012 from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Members can enjoy lunch in the Member Lounge from Silver Diner!

Tuesday, October 2

Club Mom at Chesterfield Town Center. Enjoy music from Hope Harris, and kids under 12 get a free breakfast coupon.

Healthy Child, Healthy World was started by Jim and Nancy Chuda in 1992 after their 5 year old daughter Colette died of cancer linked to pesticide exposure.   The organization is an essential resource for parents to access critical, consolidated information to better protect their children, inspire healthier homes and communities and in essences, create a healthier world. Coming to this event – at RAC (Richmond Alternative Center formerly Richmond Athletic Club) on 4700 Thalbro Street, Richmond, VA – gives you the opportunity to lean about empowering and enhacting change by communicating safe, green, healthy lifestyle opportunities.  Events to be discussed include creating healthy homes, eating healthy options, toxic free personal care and general toxicity awareness.The event is FREE to members and non-members. Please RSVP to [email protected]

Midlothian Food Festival – The Magnificent Midlothian Food Festival (MMFF) is an annual all-you-can-eat fundraiser-block party at Westchester Commons sponsored by Midlothian, Brandermill, Short Pump, Chester, Huguenot Trail, James River, and Powhatan Rotary Clubs for the benefit of local charities.

All Fired Up Kids Fun Night – 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. – Kids, join us Friday, October 5th from 6-8pm for some pottery painting, wet clay making and pizza. We’ll be celebrating all the best fall festivities as we create a spider pinch pot from wet clay and a Halloween candy bowl. A pizza dinner is included. The cost is just $25 per child. 4th Annual Virginia Walk for Lupus Now – RIR – Please join us for the 4th Annual Virginia Walk for Lupus Now!, on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, VA. The walk starts at 3pm, while registration opens at 2pm. Please visit www.virginialupuswalk.org to register and walk, while helping raise money to assist those suffering from lupus. It will be a fun day of food, music, vendors and festivities while raising awareness and support for lupus.

Gallmeyer Farms Fall Festival– 10 am – 4 pm – Celebrate the start of fall with pumpkin picking, music, hayrides, the straw bale maze, the romping pile and more. Pumpkins available for picking, as well as winter squash, Indian corn, gourds and more.

Second Street Festival – Jackson Ward at 10 a.m. with food, music, vendors, and fun. The hands of time are turned back to the past when 2nd Street was the heart & soul of Richmond’s African American community. Hogtober 2 – For the second year in a row, Hogtober returns to Church Hill’s Libbie Hill Park for BBQ, brews and music. Featuring the best in Richmond barbecue and more.

Evening Tour! Church Hill – 6-7:30 p.m. – Examine 19th century architecture and modern revitalization efforts in Richmond’s oldest intact neighborhood. Developed by Major William Mayo, Church Hill is home to St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry made his famous speech, and the city’s largest number of antebellum structures. Meet at Patrick Henry Park across from St. John’s Church, E. Broad and 24th streets.

Handmade Harvest Craft Show from 9am – 4 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church (near West End).  A near West End craft show featuring 35 vendors with handmade crafts and unique gifts. Free admission.Bring your family and friends and come shop! Proceeds will benefit Trinity United Methodist Church’s youth programs.

OystoberFest – St. Thomas Episcopal Church – Free to attend – RICHMOND’S FAVORITE OYSTER ROAST – To Benefit St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and its 40+ Outreach Ministries . Oysters, Beer, Brats, Bands and a Kids’ Zone. What: Fried, grilled and raw oysters are the main event, with brats and other grilled options available. Beer and other refreshments will be available. A day full of live music including The Orderlies, Maki, Endymion, Side Tracked and East of Afton. The Kids’ Zone will include a moon-bounce, slides and more.  Prizes will be raffled all day; prizes include brand-new Apple ipad.

5th Annual Arts on the Grove – 10 am – 4:30 pm. Seventh Street Christian Church. Join us for the 5th Annual Arts on the Grove event! Art vendors and demonstrations, dance, live music and classical concerts, juried art, raffle and prizes,food, face painting amd moon bounce. Main prize this year is a week time share at Myrtle Beach.

VirginiaFIRST Robot Rumble – 10 am-5 pm. Cheer on your favorite robot as high school teams compete in this off season event. Want to drive a robot yourself? Visit the FIRST Tech Challenge Robot Road show to run a ‘bot on a test track and earn your robot driver’s license. Learn more about FIRST programs from mentors, staff and teams. Martin’s Tour of Richmond – RIR – The Sports Backers hosting the first-ever MARTIN’S Tour of Richmond cycling event on Saturday, October 6. This Gran Fondo will feature a full 102-mile loop around Richmond and eight regional localities as well as a 58-mile option and a 29-mile option.

CMoR hosts a special children’s area at the annual 2nd Street Festival in historic Jackson Ward on Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th from 11:00am – 5:00pm. Children can create festive paper hats, crafty noisemakers, and more! Attendees enjoy entertainment on four stages, featuring R&B, Jazz, fashion shows, gospel music,  and performances by a multitude of community groups over the several blocks of the Festival. For more information, visit the Greater Jackson Ward News or Venture Richmond.

CreationFest – Messiah’s fall festival where we celebrate God’s creation and love in our lives through arts and crafts vendors, a bake sale, brunswick stew sale, music, family fun, and a special pet blessing service. The arts and crafts vendors open to the public at 9 am. The Pet Blessing Service is held by our outside cross at 12:30 pm and lasts about thirty minutes. All pets and their human family members are welcome, for God created them all! The Hanover Humane Society, Lutheran Family Services, and Hanover Habitat for Humanity are invited as our special guests to share about their work. Richmond Cathedral International Food Fest – This event will display the cultural and religious diversity of our metropolitan community through food and drink along with culturally rich entertainment. Admission is a minimum ticket purchase of $5 per person and $10 per family! The admission will provide you with an equal amount of tickets to exchange for food and beverage.

Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival – Rally your coworkers, friends and family, and join us for Richmond’s newest spectacle on water – dragon boating! Led by the rhythmic beat of a drum, teams of 20 synchronized paddlers, one drummer and one steersperson race 500 meters up the river in 40-foot canoes rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails.

24th Annual AT&T Virginia Children’s Festival – If you’re interested in a drive towards the coast, this is a fantastic event for kids. Hampton Roads’ most beloved family festival is filled with more than 100 creative and interactive activities, storytelling, hands-on workshops and educational displays, cultural experiences, arts and crafts, costumed characters and more!

Full Moon Madness – 4-7pm – For the past two years, the John Tyler Community College Foundation and Chesterfield County have welcomed over 2,000 visitors for an evening of howling fun! This year, the entire community will again come alive to help raise funds for John Tyler Community College (JTCC) students. The event is not just a fundraiser; it offers a 5K race, 1-Mile Moonwalk and a variety of free activities to encourage a healthy community. Whether you are in top physical shape, are becoming more health conscious, or simply want to get outside for a fun, fall evening, Full Moon Madness has something for you.

Winged Wonders! Family Workshops NEW!  1:30pm–3:30pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Ages 5 – 12 with accompanying adult. To honor our favorite winged-visitors, the Butterfly Fairy will present a series of workshops for an adult and child to learn and create together as they join in engaging activities in the Garden. Each pair will complete one take home activity per child.  Registration required.

Home Depot Kids Workshop – FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

At Home at Maymont – You are invited to a family-friendly visit to the Dooleys’ elegant home while enjoying a glimpse of the formal rooms and the beloved Swan Bedroom. Outside, carriage rides and people from the past fill the estate with activity. You won’t want to miss the Suffrage Rally, just in time for the election of 1912! Carytown Food & Wine Festival “A Taste of Carytown” – The Carytown Merchants Association is proud to once again host Carytown Food & Wine Festival “A Taste of Carytown”, Sunday, October 7th from 12p-6p. This year’s Food & Wine Festival will prove to be the best yet as renowned Virginia wineries will once again be back to educate and provide samples of their succulent fermentations along with plenty of great food from local restaurants. We will also be offering a $10 designated driver ticket. Children 12 & under get in free with a paid adult.
