Richmond Named No. 8 in Forbes List of Best Cities for Working Mothers

We’re super-thrilled that our very own Richmond, Virginia was named Number Eight on the Forbes 2012 Best Cities for Working Mothers List.

The Forbes List takes into account salary, safety, health care, education, commute times and other critical factors in the annual list, and I have to say that I strongly agree with them.

Richmond is home to some of the best household names in corporations that consistently rank high upon lists touting family-friendly atmospheres; my own full-time position at Capital One is fortunately one of those. We have a highly-mobile, flexible workforce and in the almost two years that I’ve worked there we’ve grown significantly; I’ve found that the focus is on what you contribute rather than where you sit. I appreciate being able to work from home while caring for a sick child and working in the evening due to time missed at a child’s school event that day.

In fact, we ran a sponsored post for Capital One earlier this year with a focus on recruiting work-at-home customer service representatives. Initiatives such as this are just one of the opportunities in Richmond for working parents, as well as all professionals to experience freedom and flexibility without a commute.

Several weeks ago we published Letter to Working Moms and we support all moms–and realize that all moms work.

If you’re a working parent and love the flexibility that your job provides, please share your experience with us. Businesses that “get it” when it comes to balancing work and home life tend to have greater retention rates and talent than those that don’t, and we want our readers to have a wealth of information should they be seeking work outside of the critical “Household CEO” job–the toughest job of all.
