Join the Confederate Mortar Crew and Participate in Drills
Henricus Historical Park will present a Civil War Living History Day highlighting the Bermuda Hundred Campaign on July 27. Period-dressed historical interpreters will portray soldiers, sailors and civilians around Dutch Gap from July 1864-January 1865 while opposing armies and navies of the Civil War competed for the Confederate capital of Richmond.
Demonstrations will feature:
- daily camp life for Union and Confederate soldiers
- medical, supply and religious services provided by the U.S. Christian Commission to Union troops
- daily life for women living as refugees when their homes became battlegrounds
- mortar drills and firings will take place and visitors will be encouraged to join the mortar crew
“In addition to many Colonial milestones, Henricus Historical Park offers rich Civil War history due to its prime location as a military outpost on a bluff overlooking the James River,” said Charles L. Grant, executive director. “There is no better time to learn about the Civil War at Henricus and Dutch Gap than during the Sesquicentennial Commemoration.”
