Richmond, Va. (Aug. 5, 2013) – HCA Virginia’s Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals have earned the Gold Seal of Approval for its heart attack, advanced primary stroke, total hip, total knee, and brain tumor programs from The Joint Commission.

The certification recognizes the hospitals’ compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

Johnston-Willis Hospital, part of CJW Medical Center, is the only hospital in the country to receive the brain tumor Gold Seal of Approval.

“This recognition speaks to the continued investment in quality care that that our hospitals provide on a daily basis,” said Tim McManus, CEO of Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals. “We are proud to maintain a culture of excellence so that our patients can benefit from these efforts.”

The fact that we were the first and are still the only Brain Tumor certified center in the entire country is a testament of our dedication to cutting-edge technologies and medical practices.”

A Joint Commission expert evaluated Chippenham and Johnston-Willis for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including evidence-based medicine, leadership, and medication management.

“In achieving The Joint Commission certification, Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals have demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients,” said Jean Range, executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission. “Certification is a voluntary process and I commend these hospitals for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas including compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
