Take a Breath: Fun Crafts for Thanksgiving

turkeypuppetsbothTake a breath before you fall head-first into the craziest shopping season of the year and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!

For the time being, we’re just going to try and ignore the Christmas music, decorations, and commercials reminding us to “buy, buy, buy!” and try to fully enjoy the season of being thankful. The truth is, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to show your family that you love them – sometimes all it takes is sharing some special time together and creating a craft that reminds us all of the many blessings in our lives.

Here is a simple craft you can do at home with a few simple supplies: a Turkey Puppet!

What you’ll need:

  • Feathers
  • Brown paper bags
  • Googly Eyes
  • Craft Glue
  • Construction paper
  • Scotch Tape
  • Crayons

Here’s how…

  1. turkeywtapeDepending on how involved your kids can be, either trace out the shapes of the turkey’s beak in orange construction paper and his “gobbler” in red, or just go ahead and cut them out yourself.
  2. In the meantime, kids can be decorating their brown paper bag by drawing lots of colorful feathers with crayons. Then, kids can help glue the beak, gobbler, and the googly eyes onto the flap of the brown paper bag to make a turkey face.
  3. Next attach feathers to the back of the paper bag, so they pop up over his head. Then secure with some scotch tape.
  4. Once dry, use your new turkey puppets for a family activity on Thankfulness. Have your child give the turkey a voice, a name, and have a conversation with your puppets about what they are thankful for. Oftentimes kids will be more open with their emotions and thoughts if they are speaking through a character – plus, it’s more fun that way!

Most importantly, have fun. Be silly. And enjoy your turkey puppet family time!
