Henricus to Offer Resources for Educators Including Open Houses, Teacher Institutes, Field and Education Days

Henricus Historical Park 2CHESTER, Va., Jan. 22, 2014 – Henricus Historical Park will make a wide variety of resources available to educators in 2014. Open houses, teacher institutes, field and education days will take place throughout the year as listed below. Registration is required one week prior to each event by contacting the phone numbers included with each listing.

Henricus Home-School History Education Day 

Friday, February 14 (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

Experience home-school education programs for ages 4-14 designed to meet curriculum goals through fun and interactive experiences at a living-history museum. Students will work on age- appropriate, hands-on mapping skills and environmental activities featuring Virginia Indian and Colonial history. Call 804-318-8797 to register. Adults must accompany all children. Cost is $10 for students and $8 for adults. Patron students are $9 and Patron adult admission is free.

Henricus Annual Educator Open House 

Thursday, April 24 (2–5 p.m.)

Participate in guided site tours, learn about make-and-take craft activities and experience demonstrations of hands-on, age-appropriate and SOL-aligned education programs. Open to educators at public, private and home schools. Light refreshments served. Call 804-318-8797 to register. Admission is free to active educators, administrators and their immediate families.

Henricus Teacher Institute 

Thursday, July 24 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.)

Join educators from the Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom for an SOL-aligned workshop focusing on the history, agriculture and culture of Colonial-era Virginia. The workshop will include Colonial and Virginia Indian history, agricultural history talks and activities relating to primary sources and questioning strategies. Open to educators of grades 1-12. 17th-Century History Field Day at Henricus

Tuesday, September 30 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.)

Take part in guided site tours and stationed activities for school and adult groups featuring demonstrations from everyday 17th-century life in Virginia Indian and Colonial cultures. Each tour is two hours and includes age-appropriate, hands-on educational activities. Call 804-318- 8797 to register. Cost is $12 per person or $10 for Henricus Foundation Patrons.

Henricus Historical Park is located on 32 acres along the scenic and historic James River and is  surrounded by the 810-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area. Only 20 minutes from Richmond, the  living history museum is located at 251 Henricus Park Road, Chester, Virginia 23836.
