Summer Camps From Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare

Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare are now offering three exciting opportunities for middle and high school students to learn about and perform Shakespeare. In March & April join Shakespearean instructors Thomas Cunningham and Jeffrey Cole for an INTRODUCTION TO SHAKESPEARE class at Richmond CenterStage. On April 7th and 8th they will be holding auditions for this summer’s FESTIVAL YOUNG COMPANY, who perform Shakespeare monologues and songs on the ground of Agecroft Hall during the Richmond Shakespeare Summer Festival and they are also introducing a SUMMER SHAKESPEARE CAMP in June and July.  This three week day camp will end with a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

 

Introduction to Shakespeare

Wednesdays, March 5 – April 9: 4pm to 6pm
Genworth Brightlights Education Center at Richmond CenterStage
Middle and High School Students
Cost: $200

Explore the world of Shakespeare through scenes, monologues, and performances! Students will gain a strong understanding of verse, prose, meter, staging, character analysis and audition techniques, with the opportunity to rehearse and work on scenes from Shakespeare’s plays.

Week 1: Intro to Shakespeare
Week 2: Scene Study
Week 3: Monologues and Soliloquies
Week 4: Shakespeare’s Staging Conventions
Week 5: Audition Technique
Week 6: Production and Performance

Festival Young Company

Rehearsals begin April 30 (Wednesdays 6pm to 8pm and Saturdays 1pm to 4pm)
Performances: June 12 – August 3 (Thursday – Sunday from 6:30pm to 8:15pm)
Rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade Students
Cost: $250 New Students/ $175 Returning Students

Festival Young Company students spend the summer learning Shakespearean scenes and monologues, and exploring Elizabethan language, culture and songs from experienced acting professionals. Students then expand their acting skills by doing preshow performances for our audiences on the grounds of Agecroft Hall during the Richmond Shakespeare Summer Festival.

New students will audition on April 7 and 8 at 6 p.m. Returning students are not required to audition.

 

Shakespeare Summer Camp

June 23 – July 11: Monday – Friday 9am to 3pm
Performances: July 14 – 15 at 10am
Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Students
Cost: $500/FYC Students $400

Discover the world of Shakespeare in a fun and social atmosphere! During this three-week intensive, students will work with theatre professionals and unravel Shakespeare’s plays with text analysis; transform themselves into Shakespeare’s characters through voice, movement and improvisational work; learn stage combat; and develop fundamental acting skills using classical theatre techniques. The camp will culminate in a special one-hour performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed entirely by the Summer Campers!

Financial aid is available for Festival Young Company and Shakespeare Summer Camp only.  Please have your financial aid application for Festival Young Company turned in by March 14, and your financial aid application for the Shakespeare Summer Camp turned in by April 30.
