Good Times at our Favorite Kids’ Salon
Did you commemorate your child’s first haircut? For our family, it was a big moment for us to celebrate (not that either of my boys cared at the time). We went to our favorite kids’ hair salon. You know the one – the one with patient, cheery stylists, who have the skills to cut bangs in a straight line despite squirming toddlers. The same salon that showcases bright neon colors and furniture that is reminiscent of Dr. Seuss. So to commemorate the big day, of course we ordered the “first haircut” package, which included a lock of hair and a photo. It was a special occasion to remember, indeed.
Along the way, we celebrated first steps, first foods, first, well, everything. It is kind of what is expected, right?
I should probably be celebrating that my kids have mellowed with age, and that they no longer require an animal cracker or the 100th Disney movie on the screen to bribe encourage them to sit still for a haircut. But what about the last hair cut? Oh, I know my boys will have haircuts in their future, but it just won’t be the same when they move on up to a non-kids salon. It is readily apparent that they are outgrowing our favorite kids’ salon. My boys tower over the train table and other train enthusiasts like the relative giants that they are. My oldest even tries to facilitate sharing trains between his younger counterparts (with the exception of his brother, of course). A proud mommy moment, since it wasn’t too long ago that he was hoarding all of the trains at the train table.
Yes, this salon has been through the good, the bad and the ugly with us. True story.
The good: First haircuts and back-to-school haircuts. Dancing to music in the shopping center to show off the new “do”.
The bad: The corrective hair cut reportedly from a safety scissor impulse cut at school during a word study activity.
The ugly: When our stylist found lice on my guys’ noggins (Although the stylist was so discrete and professional as she broke the news to me, but it is still not an experience I would like to repeat).
So where do boys get their hair cut when they have “aged out” of the kid salon system? To the old-fashioned barber shop? To any grown up big box hair salon my husband frequents? Will we find someone who understands that one of my boys has thick hair which needs to be thinned out regularly and that one unfortunately inherited my thin, fine hair and that they need to “texturize” his hair so that the scissor marks don’t show? I worry that we won’t get the same personal attention.
Have you faced this dilemma?
If so, where is your “go-to” haircut place for your family?
And do they have tunes to jam to outside the salon?
